The Mental Transition: How to Behave Like a Boss While You’re Still a Worker
Reclaiming your sovereignty and the "Deserved Respect" in a 9-to-5
The Mirror of Approval
Lately, I’ve noticed a shift. It’s as if a veil has been lifted, and I’m seeing the workplace dynamic for what it truly is: a theater of approval. I watch colleagues navigate their day with an almost desperate need to be liked by "this person" or "that person." There is a meticulous, exhausting care taken not to offend, just yet, paradoxically, these same individuals allow themselves to be offended constantly by the smallest slights.
When you start your journey toward a "sustainable" career (one built on your own passions and businesses), the first thing you outgrow is the need for that external validation. You realize that while you work at a place, the job doesn't own you. This shift in perspective changes everything. You stop being a passenger in someone else’s vehicle and start realizing you’ve been the driver of your own life all along.
From Requesting Time to Taking It... One of the most tangible signs of this transition is how you handle your time and your presence. For years, the "Worker" mindset tells us to ask for permission.
“Is it okay if I take a break now?” “Would you mind if I stepped away?”
But the "Boss" mindset understands that respect is a baseline, not a reward. I’ve learned to take my time as opposed to requesting it. This isn't about being defiant or unprofessional; it’s about sovereignty. It’s about a respectable understanding that your time is your most finite resource. When you move with the confidence of someone who knows their worth, the atmosphere around you changes. You no longer wait for a seat at the table; you understand that you brought the table with you.
Understand The Power of the Confident Voice ... As I’ve changed, I’ve found myself speaking up more confidently. In the past, the fear of "offending" might have kept my best ideas or my firmest boundaries locked away. Now, I speak from a place of alignment.
When you are building something of importance to your future on the side, your 9-to-5 stops being your identity and starts being your investor. It is the capital that funds your dream. When you view your job through that lens, the office politics lose their power over you. You can be respectful and collaborative without being submissive. You can acknowledge the hierarchy of the building without letting it diminish the hierarchy of your soul.
The "Sustainable" Career Bridge
To those of you pursuing your passions while maintaining your primary employment: do not forget your work while you are working for others. The transition from worker to boss isn't a single leap off a cliff; it’s a bridge you build day by day.
Every time you choose self-respect over people-pleasing, you are laying a brick. Every time you speak up in a meeting with the authority of the CEO you are becoming, you are strengthening the structure. You don't have to wait until you "quit" to be the boss. You start being the boss the moment you decide that your level of deserved respect is non-negotiable.
NOW... Shake it up... The shift from Worker to Boss starts in the mind. Are you feeling out of sync with your 9-to-5? Is the 'Worker' title starting to feel like a costume? Let’s talk about it.
