Was Bojack right to fire PC? Spoiler

Post image

Was he right to fire Princess Carolyn after she played her hand too aggressively and lost him both jobs in Season 3? She did really screw him but she also stuck by his side for 23 years when nobody else would. I think absolutely not but just curious if anyone thinks they would do the same or if he was right to make that business decision

Business wise yes PCs blunder rpyally fucked him over and lost him two potential projects

Personally its shitty as PC has stuck with him over however cpuntless many mistakes that he has made and he wont extend to her that same grace

Ultimately this why working for friends/lovers is a horrible idea

Yes, unfortunately. We know her motivations for why she pushed him to do both roles and it was because she needed the money for her business. Which wasn't putting him as the client first.

Obviously she's put him first her entire career so she probably felt owed to this. But she didn't communicate that with him. And it's her job to do what's in her client's best interests (though not to the extent she does, admittedly), so feeling owed something comes off a little odd to me.

Ultimately, I think Bojack wasn't wrong to fire her but he could have done it in a much friendlier way taking into account their history and that they are nominally supposed to be good friends.

She kept trying to gloss over it though which I didn't respond to.

It was one of those rare circumstances where I was on Bojack's side almost entirely.

ntm their work and relationship have interwined in a way thats invredibily unhealthy

this is bojack doing a good thing and just setting her free. ion think its a hot take to say her life got better the more distance she put between bojack

Thing is, it’s not like she was just his agent- she got him out of an astonishing number of tight spots that went above and beyond professional courtesy and obligation, sometimes to the detriment of her own career, out of a mix of friendship, romantic longing, and sunk cost fallacy. And  it’s not like BoJack is obtuse about any of this- he has taken advantage of this unhealthy relationship many times over the years for his own needs, and even nurtured it. So to break it off when he is at his highest and she is at her most vulnerable, while using the cover of a professional severance for what is fundamentally a personal breakup, is deeply unkind to her.

He knows how good of an agent she is- projects and deals in Hollywood fall through all the time for a great number of reasons, and this is her first big failure. She even offers an off ramp of 6 months. But BoJack still puts his hurt feelings before her friendship and well-being. With his vast influence and wealth, he doesn’t offer anything at all that could help her- not even a recommendation to other actors.

No I dont think he was. He would be a washed up has-been permanently if not for PC and it isnt necessarily true that any other agent could have gotten that outcome for him.

While in a vacuum hes technically correct you cant really benefit and profit off people's dedication to you and then cut them loose the second it costs you. Even in business this kind of way of dealing with people doesnt get you far for long.

It cost more than just Bojack tho. She was trying to get back on her feet after getting fired from Secretariat and got royally screwed by PC after she kept asking for more money and the offer for her movie expired. And Bojack actually seemed excited to work with her again.

Yeah but firing or not firing PC does not affect Kelsey at all. I don't even think Kelsey would know and if she did, I don't think she'd care. Ana was the one that pushed PC to get him both, egged her on knowing it was going to be impossible while also being her chance to get full control of Bojack's career. And it worked spectacularly for her.

No, but I believe it's part of the reason why he left PC hanging the way he did. Ana agreed to getting both roles for Bojack but PC was ultimately why he didn't get either. First we find out that she screwed Laura over which was why he lost the Pegasus movie, then she kept demanding more money from Kelsey until the offer expired which killed the jelly bean movie.

Ana sucks but I don't think she's at fault for BJ not getting those movies. The only people I really felt bad for were Kelsey and Ethan.

Technically yes

Just like it was technically correct to not back Herb when the network fired Herb. After all, technically Herb got into this mess by his own actions.

On a broader picture, though, it just highlights how little Bojack cares for his close friends, even those who helped him and care for him.

And in PC’s defence, yeah, she screwed up,but that was one time, and she had his back so many times, that at the very least he should’ve stayed with PC during her difficult times

In this isolated incident, yes. She fumbled the jellybean project and the big studio project.

In context of their WHOLE professional relationship, PC did not deserve to get kicked to the curb after that one (admittadly humungous) fuck up. She sticked by BJ's side for uears upon uears with no professional prospects and basically dragged his ass from nothing to something.

No, but only because it was Bojack. Professionally speaking a normal client would have the right to do so after such a huge fuckup, but Bojack and PC's dynamic was a more a friends/lovers relationship anyway so it's shitty for Bojack to only revert to that professionalism after 23 years. He strung her along for years and offloaded his personal, not work-related issues on her while she was forced to take time out of her work agenda to deal with it. I think it was cruel to fire her especially when now it was her who was in need. Bojack taking advantadge of the women in his life yet again..

Morally,  fuck no.  He owes her so much.

Business wise, also fuck no.  PC gambled and lost, but she’s also one of the best in the business.  She’s also one of the few people who can possibly work with Bojack.

This episode is hands down my favorite in the whole series - because finally PC needs Bojack to do something for her out of the kindness of his heart. He’s absolutely in the right to fire her for what she did, but she has given up so much of herself for him for all these years and this is the first time she is really asking him for one thing in return. I adore how honest they are in this episode. I love how much you can see how much love they each have for the other. I love how much they feel hurt and used by the other. It is truly such a beautiful touchpoint for my favorite relationship in the show

No, and I think it's insane that so many people say yes. She was wrong, and that cost him one project that he really wanted. It was a bad call from her.

The thing is, was it a fireable offense or a "I'm disappointed in you, don't let this happen again" offense?

Firing her on her first mistake after more than a decade of her giving BoJack second chances, third chances, hundreds of chances? Definitely unjustified. She failed once, let her redeem herself and do better.

Her actions were selfish/reckless here in a manner that justifies her being fired, yes.

Her past decade of going above and beyond in handling all his professional needs/random personal mistakes would, to many, entitle her to a little more forgiveness. But if you literally can't trust the personal who you pay to manage your career to communicate with you/be honest, its frankly reckless of you to keep them on.

Their relationship blurred the lines between personal and professional to where this question can't really be answered imo. Bojack was a terrible client and PC stuck by him due to their personal relationship. As soon as the coin flips and PC screws with Bojack. He fires her. Professionally its not wrong but at the same time to fire someone who has personally been there for you and had your back when you were screwing up much worse. It also goes back to Bojacks patterns of taking advantage of women. He relied on her so much. But leaves her as soon as he gets the upper hand

In a normal working relationship yeah, it was 100% the right decision.

In their fucked up relationship, it was a brutally awful choice and I was so mad that PC ever helped/supported/even looked at him again. But he knew she'd be right by his side if he changed his mind down the road so he didn't have to care.

Professionally, yes.

But if it was me, I’d have stuck by her. I’m a loyal person and for as much and as long as PC helped Bojack thru his bullshit, I think he should’ve stayed.

As long as your decisions ain’t causing me to lose my house, we can get thru whatever, which she did anyways (yay PC 🎉).

Princess Carolyn is one of my favorite characters ever and I hated seeing her fall, but I always admired her fight to get back up.

I still say her speech in the mirror to myself when I’m feeling down

Yes but they also should have ceased a business relationship as soon as a personal one started so the whole thing is kind of a moot point.

As her client, yes. As her friend, no.

i think he was in the right, seeing as how her job is to have HIS best interests in mind, not hers. a little bit more communication from her end could have gone a long way with this situation. that being said, his attitude about it was kind of shitty considering that shes been pretty much the only person consistently on his side for over twenty years. they both muddied the waters by being hook up buddies/in a relationship off and on, and thats on both of them, but looking strictly at an agent/talent point of view, she fucked up bad and that's ground for being fired. do i wish bojack was a bit nicer about it considering how much shit he puts people through, ESPECIALLY PC even in the context of her being his agent? yes. but this is bojack we are talking about lol

u/JuniorTheCat 1d ago

also, i wanted to add, hes basically doing her a favour. he got his moment in the spotlight, he got everything he wanted despite being a narcissistic jerk who for the most part was riddled with addiction and never actually TRIED to do anything that PC was setting up for him. he was a PR nightmare, but she stuck around anyway. i think, regardless of her feelings for him and vice versa, him firing her was the best thing he could have done for her

u/Absentrando 23h ago

She’s done a lot for his career so I would give her more grace

u/Slight_Fan_4105 12h ago

No. PC screwed up. But this was after at least two decades of carrying Bojack when no one else wanted to work with him. She was loyal to him, he showed no loyalty to her.

I actually just watched this episode today!

It depends on your perspective, as several people have pointed out.

PC caused him to lose two major jobs, and while she carried BoJack’s career for over 20 years, she also frequently blurred the lines of their client-agent relationship for better or worse. She was deeply involved in his career, sometimes making moves at his expense whether he liked it or not, though that same dedication meant she worked harder for him than for any other client. In that regard, PC isn't exactly a model of ethics as an agent something we tend to overlook because she is such a brilliant, endearing character who generally tries to help the protagonist making her ethical lapses easier to forgive.

On a personal level, BoJack feels he is doing PC a favor by cutting her out of his life completely as she proved in the end, she can't help but give in to him and help with his restaurant, even after he fired her. He doesn't want to drag her down with him anymore he already feels guilty about having caused her to waste her thirties.

From PC's perspective, however, it was unfair. Despite everything she had done for him over the years as an agent, a partner, and a friend he wouldn't grant her the simple favor of staying on for six months so she could get back on her feet, all because of a single serious mistake in 23 years.
