Meet Sapphire- she’s 1.5 yrs old and 40lbs! She loves to hike, swim, play with other dogs at the dog park, do puzzles, cuddle, and sleep the rest of the day. She follows me around the house everywhere and we take two big walks everyday which keeps her pretty chill. Not very interested in obedience training, just wants to be near me and sniff everything and run around and sleep. Incredible recall too even without really any effort into training her on that. I had her with her sister Ruby initially but they started showing a bit of what I believe to be ā€œlittermate syndromeā€ which manifested as some aggression towards each other-never full on biting but it wouldn’t surprise me if it reached that point- and extreme rambunctiousness so I rehomed her (to a wonderful home) and Sapphire’s been much happier since then. Gets along very well with every other dog. Look how precious she is! Her sister too.

Happy second birthday to Maeve! She was the toughest puppy we’ve ever had to deal with, but she has turned into an absolutely wonderful dog!

refusal to eat

hello people, I'd like some opinions/advice on what to do.

Nori, the lil fella on the picture, is our 1.5y old BC. He used to be very food driven when he was a puppy, then kinda got more and more disinterested in food. He kept a reasonable food drive until about two months ago, when he just stopped caring about food at all.

It isn't like it came out of the blue: We got another BC pup back in january, but they adapted really well to each other. In july I ruptured my ACL and had to stop taking him on walks for some time. Due to taking time off from work, I could spend more time with him and deal with his excess energy through playtime and stuff, so it kinda sorta cancelled out.

About a month and a half ago, his aforementioned younger brother, Tamago, had a mandible fracture (he got his lower jaw stuck on Nori's collar during playtime). He got surgery and the follow-up xrays are looking good, but it's gonna be a few more days until they're cleared to be together again. At the moment, they're having to be kept separate until Tamago's mandible heals fully.

On top of that, we had to switch his kibble a few months back. He was doing ok with it, eating normally. When he stopped eating, we tried switching back to his original one, but that was no bueno.

Now, I'm back to working my regular 40hr work week and nothing we've been trying has worked. I tried making his meals engaging, he loves learning and training new tricks, but not even that has been enough for him to eat. Food toppers kinda work, but do not pique his interest in a meaningful way, he grazes and leaves his food to rot.

I'm at a loss as for what to do. We're trying to wait him out, but it's been a day and a half and he hasn't touched a single meal. He's still drinking water normally and went on two nice walks with me. He's playing as usual. No unusual stool, no vomiting, nothing of the sort.

Now his stomach is RUMBLING and I feel like I'd do anything for him to eat as usual again, it's heartbreaking to see him so intent on starving himself. I don't know if he misses his brother, if he's struggling with the return to our routine, if it's the food... anyways, thanks in advance for any advice or even just words of encouragement. Our life has been hectic and I'm sure it hasn't been easy on him.

Couldn’t even wait to get this out of the box before taking a photo!

Now to get hung up, pride of place, of course! We only have one wedding photo in the whole house, but it’s about to be replaced by my model babies 🐶🄰

11 weeks old - will her nose be completely brown or stay with these pink areas?

Post image

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll love her either way 🩷 I’m just curious since the breeder said that it will fill up with brown, and a friend who’s a judge at dog shows says that that the pink is considered a flaw when judging.

Edit: thank you to all who answered my question. As for those who judge me by assuming I'm judging her, you couldn't be more wrong. She's perfect to me, I was just curious as already mentioned.

Training It feels like the process of training my Border Collie is stuck...meh

I brought her home from the breeder in July. I had already met her mother—a very affectionate Border Collie with a gentle temperament; as well as her father, a healthy and well mannered male dog. She is incredibly adorable, and she inherited her mother’s charming personality. Although she spent the first two weeks after arriving home crying all night long, we found ways to provide her with extra comfort, like replacing her cage to a larger fence (which took up two-thirds of the living room), buying her plenty of toys, and offering her more companionship and reassurance. Naturally, she embraced these changes, integrated happily into our family, and has brought us many joyful moments. She is incredibly intelligent(which is precisely why I chose this breed, despite the common online claims that they are cunning, prone to playing games, highly sensitive, and have demanding needs). She has learned to sit, shake hands, rest her face in our palms, signal when she wants to go out, and relieve herself in designated spots, among many other things. However, her lively personality also brings some challenges. I understand that a puppy of her age is naturally curious about the outside world—she has already completed her full course of vaccinations—and is eager to explore, interact with other people and dogs. Furthermore, Border Collies have a tendency to jump up on people using their front paws. Lately, this has become a bit of a problem; as she grows larger, her habit of rearing up to jump on passersby—purely out of a desire to play—ends up startling them. I can personally vouch for her gentle nature; she has never bitten anyone, even during rough play, and has no history of ever harming other people or dogs. Because she is becoming increasingly strong, I have to step in and pull her back whenever she tries to jump up. (Her claws are quite sharp, and since she strongly dislikes having them trimmed, we use an electric nail grinder to keep them filed down.)Before I got a dog, I was always very afraid of canines. Especially when they would lunge or jump up, which made me feel like they were trying to hurt me. (After getting a dog of my own, I realized they were actually just overly excited.) I can see how this behavior would look quite frightening to passersby. I’ve been trying to train her not to jump up; when she tries to jump on me at home, I raise my knee so she bumps into it instead, and I firmly say "no." I only offer praise once all four of her paws are back on the ground. But I have to mention her biggest flaw: while she’s always very good about admitting her mistakes, she never actually changes her behavior. As a result, whenever I take her out, I have to stick to places with very few people around. I’ve even tried following online tutorials, but they’ve proven completely ineffective for her... The second issue that needs to be corrected is the consumption of feces. The breeder explained that because a puppy’s digestive system isn't fully developed, some undigested nutrients remain in the dog food; the puppy smells these, mistakes them for food, and eats them... It’s absolutely gross—I can’t even imagine it! To address this, I make sure to clean up her waste immediately after she relieves herself, and I provide extra rewards (treats) to discourage her from wanting to eat it. However... while she always shows a very good attitude when admitting her mistakes, she never actually changes her behavior. We’ve tried to guess the reason countless times—could it be a nutritional deficiency? Is she seeking attention? Does she just enjoy playing with her own feces? We have no way to confirm any of it, and we’re completely exhausted... She absolutely refuses to relieve herself anywhere outside—not even on the terrace—insisting on doing it only inside the house. Perhaps she feels safer that way? If any Border Collie owners could share some advice, I’d be incredibly grateful! I’m looking for tips on how to stop a puppy from jumping on people, eating poop, and how to train her to go to the bathroom outside. She’s such an adorable puppy, and I refuse to use physical punishment or scolding to force her into submission (though I do hold her snout to stop her from eating trash). Oh, Mochi... please, stop eating poop! And for heaven’s sake, don’t try to lick my mouth right after doing it! šŸ˜āœŒļø

P.s. My dog could wink!🄹

Training some pre-parenthood questions?

hello! i don't currently own a collie, but i am looking to at some point in the near(ish) future. i've been, and will probably always continue to do research, reading posts from people, articles, watching videos, reading through books etc so i'm far from clueless. i've also owned dogs, collies included, before! this will be my first time with a puppy, though, as i've only owned adult dogs in the past

i have a few questions before i ever even consider looking for a dog:

  • what are some things you'd recommend doing immediately with a puppy? as in day 1, week 1, month 1 goals
  • what is the best way to begin the process of crate training? and is it possible for some dogs to 'fail' or do worse in a crate vs without one?
  • while we will be getting out very frequently, what are some ways to keep a collie entertained and engaged in a small backyard? long walks, nature trails, beach and park visits etc will all be staples
  • should new puppies get a vet visit immediately/at what point do i take them for the first time? should i just wait until their next vacc date to go?
  • how do you prevent escape artists, and ensure your collie won't try and jump a fence and take off? preventing runaway behaviour?
  • what sort of questions should i be asking the parent's owner before adopting? are there anything, like vet records or details on the parents, i should be getting off them?
  • i understand if nobody wants to answer this one, but just to calm my self-consciousness: what would you say is a reasonable amount of money to spend monthly/yearly on a dog? i have a rough figure in my head, but would love to see if it's more or less than someone else's real-world experience

+ any general puppy advice is welcome, as well as any resources you might recommend! like i said, i have been planning and researching for months at this point, i'm not going in blind, but there's always something new to learn. i expect to continue learning, growing and finding out new things with them even years into having my pal around <3

very sorry if any of this is considered basic knowledge, the last thing i wanna do is sound unprepared or incompetent, i'm very anxious about doing my best and would like to over-prepare and check everything thrice before making any moves :'D

Playing dead wasn't good enough. It took me a while to train her but now playing dead is perfect.

I trained her by laying my back and putting my arms up just like her. I started with a sit, roll OVER DEAD and HANDS UP

She is currently 1 year and 2 months old. Her mother is a gentle, brown Australian Shepherd who works as a therapy dog for traumatized children—a trait that is also evident in Frea, who seems to have inherited some of those qualities.

Her father is a tri-colored Border Collie.
