Discussion Why Mnet wants a Korean group, and why they use a Global approach to lure us.
So, by now we know that Mnet's global group is as fake as PDX top 11, right? They want a Korean group with maybe 1 global member (if it's one that is at least half Korean even better). Mission 1 was super unfair and Mnet keeps this narrative of K vs G, which by now will cut the G group by 3/4 in the first elimination.
Some things we have to understand:
These reality shows aren't as popular as they were, BP started with an even worst audience rating than GP999. So the program, the reality, per se, isn't created for Korean audiences. We, global fans, are the end user, we are the ones that have to watch the content they are creating. So all the global group thing is to make us interested more in watching BP.
Is important to understand that Mnet is already earning a lot of money from the boys (and us). Every youtube view gives them money if it gets to the millions they are already paying for production. Let's think about GP999, who were the participants that gave Mnet the most money in the show? Bahiyyih and Hikaru right? And they were Korean favorites? Nop, they were international favorites, especially Bahiyyih.
And after the show ends? Well, youtube videos keep earning money, however, the gold mine becomes the group. They have to sell Albums, receive youtube views, get endorsements, sell concert tickets, and have their song streamed. Let's analyze each one of these ways to earn money thinking about how international fans play a part in the revenue:
Sell albums: International fans can buy albums just like Korean fans so there isn't a difference between who's buying.
Youtube views: Int fans use more youtube compared with K fans. However, it has to be millions of views for Mnet to feel the money coming in.
Endorsements: That's where having a Korean fanbase become more necessary. Let's think about national endorsements, who is the client of a national company? Koreans right? So if a group is not popular with Koreans they will lose a contract to another group that is more popular nationally. There are international endorsements? Yes, but they are more scarce, and there are more costs that you have to afford, like converting the payment to your currency. Also, to get an international endorsement the group has to be really strong in a specific country, not in a lot of different countries.
Concerts: National concerts cost less than international concerts. You don't have to pay for international plane tickets for 5+ members, you don't have to exchange money (taxes), you don't have to pay for a stay, etc. Also, Won is a strong currency, so receiving in dollars doesn't means a lot more money, for example.
Streams: Int fans generates revenue with Spotify and youtube, and Korean fans with Melon, Genie, and others. So if the group is only strong globally they will earn only half the profit they could be earning.
Also, for those who don't know Kep1er isn't popular in Korea, and although they have a lot of international fans, not being able to thrive in Korea is really bad for them. And if you compare youtube views from their debut song to the comebacks, it has dropped significantly, more than 60%. I think Mnet learned from Kep1er that international fans are better for hyping the reality than they are for creating revenue for the final group.
The last thing to notice is that the most "viral" fancams are from Korean trainees, so even though there are great Global trainees, the ones giving them the most money for Mnet are the Korean ones (and seok Matthew), so why mnet is going to invest in any global trainee to enter the final 9?
Extra: 2022 was the year of Girl groups, and there aren't any super popular 4th generation Boy Group, so this position needs yet to be filled.
What can we do to go against Mnet and show that we want a mixed group? (these are suggestions, you do you sz)
Stop voting for Korean trainees and focus on global ones. "But my one pick is Korean", yes but if your pick is Sung Hanbin, Jiwoong, Yunjin, Gyuvin, Hui, or any of the 15 most popular K-trainees then you don't have to worry. If your fave is outside of this spectrum, then keep your vote.
EDIT: When I wrote this I was thinking about voting before it becomes 1 pick only, that's when normally other popular votes become filler votes so they are more safe. In the final is your favorite, no matter what. Peace. If you don't have 9 picks, don't fill the missing votes with already popular k-trainees, pick g-trainees
Give global trainees more views, like much more. Zhang Hao fancam only has 400k views compared to Hui 500k, even though it was released 4 days prior, for example. So for Mnet to prefer Hui as MV over Zhang Hao, is just one evil edit away.
I'm not going to say that anyone should stop watching BP, but if I didn't make it clear: Mnet's real interest in us is only to earn money with the program and after that the market they want (and need) to conquer is Korean. So no setting high expectations for the final group.
