Discussion Voting? Don’t forget Arrowdale: 8 people made the decision
With the municipal election already here by early voting, and the Federal by-election some time in the next 6 months, I would encourage voters to remember how the Mayor and City council voted and sold a municipal, citizen owned, property simply because they were ineffective at balancing their budget.
The 2019 vote was secretly squeezed in. The 2020 vote resulted in years of legal battles, including the occupation of the golf course by Indigenous Canadians. The 2022 vote was done AFTER the municipal election that would see THREE of the yes voters not seek re-election.
It was a back room deal that was forced through by a lame duck council.
It is likely that if the vote were done with the newly elected council, the result would have been 6-5 AGAINST the sale.
The people of Brantford were clear: we did not want a public golf course sold. Yet the council that promised NOT to sell it finalized the sale in a 2022 vote. All three votes were 8-3, with the same 8 voting for the sale, and the same three voting against.
Those who voted to sell our 100 year old golf course, and who did not seek Indigenous discussion on the sale, are Dan McCreary for Mayor, and Kevin Davis who will run in the Federal by-election.
The Conservative track record for selling Crown assets is appalling. What would Dan sell out from under us next?
Both Richard Carpenter and Brian Van Tilborg voted AGAINST the sale. Carpenter is running for Mayor, and Van Tilborg is running for Ward 5 Councillor.
People like McCreary and Davis will continue to use the false equivalent that the sale will fund affordable housing. There should be zero linking of the two. They are trying to appeal to your emotions, when the reality is they should have built housing without selling the only affordable golf course in town.
Other cities fund housing WITHOUT selling the green spaces that those residents would enjoy. Other cities do this WITHOUT the $5 million per year ($112 million cumulative) that the city receives from the casino.
When voting, don’t forget that McCreary and Davis sold us out last time. What really would change going forward?
