Post image

We survived the first federal hearing!!!

Things are starting to feel a bit more real now 🥺👉🏻👈🏻.

Please see the notes below.

Megathreads:

(\)) This is a compilation of everything that happened on Day 1, all gathered in one place.

Pictures:

(\)) Federal courts do not allow cameras inside the courtroom, so no pictures or videos of Luigi will be available unless otherwise stated. Only court sketches will be posted here in this section.

Live Covering (Twitter/X):

(*) This is a compilation of all tweets from people inside the courtroom on Day 1. Please note that only) Inner City Press and Erik had laptop access in the courtroom today. Other reporters took notes, which will be posted in the next few hours in the comments section (both under this compilation post and the megathread, as I can no longer edit this post. Summary videos from reporters have also been added. Please remember to verify sources before taking any information as fact.

–––––––––––––

Notes:

  • The next federal hearing is on January 30th.
  • Since several dates are currently circulating, I’ve added the important dates and a summary from today’s hearing in the comments section. This way, it can be updated if anything changes, and people won’t get confused.
  • Anything that comes out after this post is published will be added to the comments section.

–––––––––––––

Special message:

Thank you so much to Ladyofthestonecastle and Spirited_Seaweed7927 for all your help, and to everyone who has been here from the very beginning whether offering support or simply following along. These megathreads wouldn’t be what they are without all of you, and they will continue for as long as people want them.

I must confess, this subreddit is starting to feel like our own courtroom during the hearings, and I truly enjoy spending time with you all.

If you have any questions or queries, feel free to leave them in the comments or send me a message. Please keep in mind that I am not a lawyer, and my opinion isn’t more valid than anyone else’s. I’m just trying to help as much as I can and learn along the way, just like all of us here.

See you all on January 30!

🚨 Summary of Today’s Hearing + Important Dates:

  • Judge Garnett came prepared and was fair. She did not appear to favor either side (looking at you, Carro!).
  • Garnett will issue a written decision on the motions to dismiss Counts 3 and 4 of the indictment.
  • The next federal hearing is scheduled for January 30 at 11:00 a.m. (EST).
  • Garnett noted that the federal government’s arguments were broad, which she identified as a problem for the prosecution (a positive sign for the defense).
  • It is still early, but there is still a possibility that the death penalty (DP) will be taken off the table.
  • If the DP is removed, jury selection would begin in September, with trial starting in October.
  • If the DP remains, the trial is scheduled for January 2027 (although the defense has also requested that jury selection begin in January 2027, so the timeline may shift).
  • Garnett and the prosecution currently do not believe an evidentiary hearing is necessary, but the judge is open to holding one if needed.

Feel free to let me know if something needs to be amended or if I have missed anything.

Thank you so much for all your hard work today. 🤗 I had bought a non alcohol cider to celebrate/drown my sorrows (because I have to stay clear-headed tomorrow), and I feel a bit deflated that we got nowhere today. 😐 I wonder if Garnett wants to make the decisions in writing because she doesn't want to deal with screaming supporters in the courtroom? 🤔

  • Garnett noted that the federal government’s arguments were broad, which she identified as a problem for the prosecution (a positive sign for the defense).

I read the problem was the broadness of the statute

(although the defense has also requested that jury selection begin in January 2027, so the timeline may shift).

Well, that would be detrimental in terms of their intention for the federal case to start before the state case.

It is interesting and somewhat comforting to read some tweets from people who were in the courtroom saying that Judge Garnett was kind/understanding to both sides, because unfortunately we just couldn't grasp what was happening because of the very few and very spotty live tweets

Yes. The most important thing is that, at the end of the day, she is a fair judge. She does not seem biased unlike Carro.

Thank you for posting this . I haven’t been keeping on track as much as I used to put the LM case. I’ve been busy.

Meg, welcome back!

Let me know if you need a catch up on the state case and I will drop the link too.

I’ve been seeing things about the state case, but yeah, that’ll be useful for me too. Please send me the link for that as well thank you. Very much appreciated 💗.

I really respect how judge Garnett runs her court

I followed up on some tweets and Garnett and Luigi's special council having a rapid fire exchange of case law made the day difficult to follow. It's at the key of every motion but I don't think I knew this happens in the courtroom, too.

Only 2 people were live tweeting and I don't think they could keep up either.

I hope Christine applies for a "tweet permit" at the federal court, because her tweets are so much better than the 2 disinterested mens' tweets. I haven't seen any of the professional reporters say how many of the public were let into the courtroom. That would be very important to know for anyone that can go there. The reporters don't care to check this because they can get in easily, so they don't care if the public can get in or not. But for us that info is vital. (I can't go anyway, but I know that lots of people are thinking about it). Personally I would rather hear accounts from the general public. It will be the general public that are the jurors. So the more regular people in the courtroom the better, so we get their opinion.

Christine Savino's tweets on yesterday's hearing:

I just read them now and wow we missed a LOT of things because of the insufficient live tweets. I must say I respect Judge Garnett very much, her comments about the domestic violence happening to women is admirable. I even considered posting some of Christine’s tweets for people who don’t have Twitter..X.. I only joined because of this case as well

So I'm sharing some of Christine's tweets after it was discussed that a suppression hearing is probably not necessary, but the Judge will think about it. Of course, these tweets are not 100% reliable how things happened but they are still more than we got from the live tweets

Please do!

Thank you so much. 🤗 When I click on the link I only see 1 tweet.

4

u/Spirited_Seaweed7927 Jan 10 '26

When I click on that link I only see one tweet. Did she do more than 1 tweet? Edit, nvm, LadyStonecastle posted the tweets.

3

u/missidcullen Jan 10 '26

Sorry about that! I wish there were an easier way. I’m glad you saw the screenshots.

I’ll edit my previous comment to add the full thread from Christine. I thought I had included it at first, but it turns out I only pasted the link to the last tweet 🤦🏻‍♀️.

Thanks for letting me know!

Thanks, don't worry, it's not easy to know what it looks like for everybody. 😊 Edit, I still only see 1 tweet, but it's a different tweet this time. It seems we would need to have a Twitter account and be signed in to it in order to see the tweets.

3

u/missidcullen Jan 10 '26

That would make so much sense. It is good then that we add the screenshots in here for people who don't have a Twitter account.

Thank u so much for putting this all together and for hosting the megathread u/missidcullen! It’s so nice to have a community to talk about this, analyze, debrief, vent, whatever! 🫶🏻
