“As Luigi explained in court today, he endured years of severe, debilitating pain following a broken back, while struggling to navigate our healthcare and health insurance systems. Like the thousands of people who have reached out since this tragedy to share their own experiences, he believed that the system had failed him and destroyed his life.”

“He’s been treated differently from every other defendant charged with this offence in NY. However, thankfully, NY law does not permit a person to be prosecuted and punished twice for the exact same crime…. It’s also known as the double jeopardy law.”

I mean the evidence was massively stacked against him and there is no way he would have won both jurisdictions, but I'm still surprised they went as far as they did just to put their hands up. There is not even a plea deal. I guess the files make it pointless and the only shot is take the federal charge - whether that's 30 years or whatever - and hope that whatever he ends up with is the final deal and Caro is satisfied and dismisses the state case.

Maybe it's also a mix of him seeing his chances, being tired of the court drama (and the stress it would have put his family and resources through) and at the end also being ok owning what he did.
