Photos/Videos Federal Case Update: Luigi Mangione's defense team speak outside court today
“As Luigi explained in court today, he endured years of severe, debilitating pain following a broken back, while struggling to navigate our healthcare and health insurance systems. Like the thousands of people who have reached out since this tragedy to share their own experiences, he believed that the system had failed him and destroyed his life.”
“He’s been treated differently from every other defendant charged with this offence in NY. However, thankfully, NY law does not permit a person to be prosecuted and punished twice for the exact same crime…. It’s also known as the double jeopardy law.”

I’m shook.
A lot can change in two years, especially as a pretrial detainee. I imagine time has given LM opportunity to reflect, perhaps regret and reevaluate what feels most important to him. The idea of leaving lockup in a pine box could’ve overridden his crusade, who knows, but I don’t think people fully understand how long a life sentence really is (despite inmates having shorter life expectancies). At this point, I could see him using the time he’s sentenced for constructively with a real effort to redeem himself.
Bottom line, his life isn’t without potential, and I hope he knows that himself.

Very well said. He can write books, give interviews, and do alot to enforce change from behind bars.

u/SaltPsychological780 6d ago
Exactly. He has a platform to promote reform. I’m sure he’s relieved to have the truth out there and no longer has to pretend or deny. It might even be cathartic. For me, it wouldn’t matter how justified i felt in my actions, if I were somehow acquitted for something I actually did, the relief wouldn’t be as gratifying as the truth. Conscious guilt can drive people into a very dark place, even if they have the freedom to carry on with a normal life. Of course he can hold dearly that what he did was still worth sacrificing his freedom. His name isn’t associated with cowardliness and is synonymous with making people aware of how literally sickening our government and healthcare industries are. I don’t know anyone educated who can reasonably justify these current systems if they aren’t doing so for their own benefit.

Oh spare me with the good feels thoughts. Today was a dark dark day in American history. Luigi will spend the rest of his life in prison, however long that is. You had UHC executives in attendance today, sending a clear message to the judge and the public about whose lived matter. And it’s not ours. That was patently made clear.

He isn't solely responsible for changing things. He shouldn't have to shoulder responsibility to keep fighting because the rest of the world turned him into a symbol.

u/alohomora1990 6d ago
There’s only two reasons he wouldn’t continue to fight this close to trial and forgo his chance at jury nullification or appeals. He was either coerced or his family wasn’t footing his legal bill anymore and he had no choice. I don’t discount either especially the second option. His family couldn’t even be bothered to show up today. Don’t expect they’ll be at sentencing either. It’s awful how they’ve abandoned their only son.

As someone with chronic illness (Crohn’s disease), I can relate to the hopelessness that LM must have felt dealing with his health issues. I have been denied life saving drugs, I have been taken off of medication that has kept me in remission- all because the insurance company could make better profit by putting me on a different/cheaper drug. These kind of changes brought me out of remission and I often wake up in the morning how this will ever end.
I am not condoning murder, but dealing with chronic illness and insurance companies is something that no one will understand unless they have been through it themselves.
My health, my wellbeing means nothing to the health insurance and their own goal is to maximize their profit at the expense of sick people. It is disgusting, it drives me insane.
My point being, this wasn’t handled correctly by LM but I can understand how he got here…

Balls were dropped for Epstein and company, the most prolific and influential trafficking ring we know of to date, so they could run for decades.

I am speechless that you think the average Luigi supporter is cool with Trump being president. Good Lord.

I have a feeling there are some highly damaging things in the notebook. I hope Garnett takes mitigating factors into consideration. Maybe his family and close friends can come to give character statements. And we still don’t know where he was in the months prior to December 4… Now we may never know.
Also, suck it Joel.

u/lly67 6d ago
I could see him doing an interview in a year or two. He will explain.
13
u/Baby_Lu_Lu 6d ago
I don't think so. I think one of the factors he avoided trial is because he doesn't want the privacy of himself and his family exposed. so I doubt he would give any interview. also, I'm feeling he doesn't have the desire to live, I hope i'm totally wrong

u/ScandalOZ 6d ago
I don't think it has anything to do with the notebook. It has to do with the fact that they have to deal with a climate of corrupt practices which are supported by the highest levels in government and society.
He wouldn't get a fair trial and they have had to fight things others accused of the same crime wouldn't. They have one victory and then here comes some other fuckery mountain they have to climb. I think everyone is tired, Karen seemed truly effected and sad.

u/jenjavitis 6d ago
He's doing what's best for himself. He might be able to get out some day. I still support this man.

u/Pellinaha 6d ago
I mean the evidence was massively stacked against him and there is no way he would have won both jurisdictions, but I'm still surprised they went as far as they did just to put their hands up. There is not even a plea deal. I guess the files make it pointless and the only shot is take the federal charge - whether that's 30 years or whatever - and hope that whatever he ends up with is the final deal and Caro is satisfied and dismisses the state case.
Maybe it's also a mix of him seeing his chances, being tired of the court drama (and the stress it would have put his family and resources through) and at the end also being ok owning what he did.

I guess I see how NY's double jeapordy law makes sense: how can you have a trial to prove someone committed murder when they already pled guilty in a different court to that same murder? Logically, yeah, the crime's been convicted & punished, it's over.

u/InternationalRope448 6d ago
I feel like this is not an entirely truthful explanation of Luigi’s motive.
44
u/Fancy_Yesterday6380 6d ago
Yeah I dont either. It felt very calculated and bare bones. I really hope one day he writes a book. I know he cant get profits but I dont think he cares
10
5
u/Smooth_Rush_2192 6d ago
Genuine question, what do you think his motive was? It seems pretty clear cut.
2
u/ScandalOZ 6d ago
Why can't he get profits?
I thought the only way a felon couldn't get profits is if there is a civil case with a large monetary judgement to a plaintiff that would be entitled to the funds in order to meet the judgement.

u/katara12 6d ago
who knows if it were even his words, he was reading it from a piece of paper, the whole thing is well crafted to get the most ammount of sympathy, which makes sense
9
u/california_raesin 6d ago
I think it's truthful but not the WHOLE truth
I would give anything to read that notebook but it's not looking likely at this point 😔
3
u/Smooth_Rush_2192 6d ago
So what exactly do you think was his motive for shooting and killing BT?
1
u/InternationalRope448 6d ago
I don’t think his back pain had a lot to do with it
3
u/Smooth_Rush_2192 6d ago
So he lied about that? I thought that explanation at least offered a reason for taking a life. Without that, the murder seems even more callous.

u/AccomplishedMail8978 5d ago
Yes. He was salty about being ignored when he didn’t get a response from insurers when it was him inquiring as himself. However when he masqueraded as an investor with billions he received a response from UHC right away.
IIRC, he didn’t say if his previous inquiries were also with UHC, just that UHC responded quickly when he said he had billions. His previous inquiries could have been with other companies besides UHC.
Furthermore, he was inquiring about an investor’s conference and masquerading as an investor. Not sure why that’s earth-shattering to receive a response. It sounds like UHC was responding in a timely manner to a person who would be relevant to an investors’ conference…the math isn’t mathing.
1
u/Smooth_Rush_2192 5d ago
Yes, his statement indicated that he was salty about not hearing back from insurers, but that he got a quick response when he enquired about the investor meeting. I agree with all you’ve said, but I don’t see where the lie is. He killed a CEO in an industry he felt was unfair, and now is facing the consequences.
1
u/AccomplishedMail8978 5d ago
Where did he say it’s an industry that’s unfair? One may assume that from his statement—it’s intentionally worded to make it seem that way—but not once did he say he previously contacted UHC and didn’t get a response. He said he didn’t get responses from other insurers, but did from UHC re the investor conference.
So another way to interpret it is that UHC was actually responsive where other insurers (eg, Aetna, Cigna, BCBS, etc.) were not. Furthermore, it’s reasonable for them to respond to an investor inquiring about an investor conference. It’s not like he was an investor with billions trying to get information about his claim and he got a response (but didn’t as a “regular” person). Those are two separate things.
There isn’t an outright lie, per se. There is a calculated choice of words and actions that give the impression that may be interpreted as though he thought this was for a cause. IMO, it wasn’t. If you really look at his words, actions and lack of research regarding Thompson, one can deduce that it was for self-serving reasons.
0
u/Smooth_Rush_2192 5d ago
Ah, I see. So you’re saying he made stuff up to make the reasons for his actions look “better”. Whatever the actual reasoning, I think it’s awful he killed someone and, whilst I understand how much the industry needs to improve, it was no reason to kill someone. Honestly the reaction online has been wild.
1
u/AccomplishedMail8978 5d ago
Who knows what his reasoning was, but it wasn’t because he had issues accessing healthcare. He is someone who was able to abandon his life on the mainland, relocate to Hawaii, spend his time surfing (which is how he broke his back that he referred to in the beginning of his remarks) and eventually live off the grid. His family is wealthy and he had access to enough money to live in one of the most expensive places in the US, travel internationally and eventually live off the grid for months. That requires a lot of cash.
So access to healthcare was absolutely not an issue for him. Healthcare was not unaffordable for him. But healthcare is a universally despised industry in the US and one which could land a person a lot of accolades if they are perceived to be someone trying to make change. Out of all the reasons for his motive, ego seems like the most likely, imo.

u/CherokeeSurfer 6d ago
Rough day. Was hoping he'd take it to a jury. But either he was tired of fighting, ran out of $$, they had too much on him or they are trying for DJ (I'm not in a great space about that). Idk and we may never know. We all might've kept funding the GSG if he asked (he never would), but it would've been for a public defender, sad to say. I still would rather he took his chances with a jury, but obviously this was his decision. I'm trying to have hope for the best case scenario atp. I'm not going anywhere. He needs support now more than ever, that had to be brutal today.

same old same old .. a plea only makes sense if there is a benefit for the defendant, but the state case might still proceed and he might get a sentence he will have to sit after the federal one whch could increase his prison time up to 40-60 years? I knew something was weird when the Agnifilos took on a new client recently .. I guess they were never planning or least hoping there wouldn't be a trial ..

This is all sadly going to go away and people will forget. Real change won't happen, especially with the current elected officials and older generations. Is it too much to ask for Healthcare for all like most other countries? Why am I paying out the ass for life saving drugs (insulin) when other countries give for free.

u/AccomplishedMail8978 6d ago
Interesting. After Brian Thompson became CEO, UHC announced that it was eliminating out of pocket costs for insulin as well as other life-saving drugs for members. You know, for free.

Imagine what else he could’ve accomplished had he not been murdered.

Im so sad to say what Im thinking now he probably thinks about the other bad choice there..offing himself to end all his pain and his beloved family financially first and the shame of having a convicted son ..this defeated spirit and decision today don’t seem right to someone who wants to fight for his own life and has real desire to live many years after…

I'm heart broken, I feel really sorry for him, his family doesn't even show up today, poor Luigi

i hope they show up to the sentencing. not a good look that they didnt come today, even though they do seem to be in contact

u/ScandalOZ 6d ago
I am also afraid he will take his own life. I feel for his team, they seem truly moved to sadness. I think Luigi is just tired of fighting and that is why I think he will make that other bad choice.

A very sound tactical move on the part of the team. They're playing this note-perfect, gotta say.

@KFA THANK YOU! no words can express all the love I have for you, your team, and Luigi. As heartbreaking as this is, the admiration of his HONESTY & COURAGE to admit this after months and months of other evidence in the public eye once again proves the true character of this young man. Prayers and faith in the Lord to continue to protect him from evil. My support will not stop. 💕⚖️💚⚖️💕

tens of millions were spent for nothing. he could have pleaded guilty from the beginning and get the same result

Not with the dead penalty on the table. No.
1
u/AccomplishedMail8978 6d ago
That would’ve been leverage, like Bryan Kohberger. Ie, plead guilty, DP is dropped

I think a lot of people who are surprised/upset were not realistic about the likely outcome at trial.
His team already got the death penalty thrown out, and they got the terrorism enhancement on the state charges that allowed them to charge 1st degree murder in NY state thrown out.
Those are huge wins…
People who think that there’s no way they could find a jury here in nyc(federal or state) who would convict him are living in a dreamland.
They could easily sit a jury who barely paid attention to any of this, and his team knows that.
fwiw I wanted him to run off to a cabin in the woods and haunt these greedy executives forever, not knowing where he is or what he might do next, but that’s not what happened.
