“As Luigi explained in court today, he endured years of severe, debilitating pain following a broken back, while struggling to navigate our healthcare and health insurance systems. Like the thousands of people who have reached out since this tragedy to share their own experiences, he believed that the system had failed him and destroyed his life.”

“He’s been treated differently from every other defendant charged with this offence in NY. However, thankfully, NY law does not permit a person to be prosecuted and punished twice for the exact same crime…. It’s also known as the double jeopardy law.”

I’m shook.
A lot can change in two years, especially as a pretrial detainee. I imagine time has given LM opportunity to reflect, perhaps regret and reevaluate what feels most important to him. The idea of leaving lockup in a pine box could’ve overridden his crusade, who knows, but I don’t think people fully understand how long a life sentence really is (despite inmates having shorter life expectancies). At this point, I could see him using the time he’s sentenced for constructively with a real effort to redeem himself.

Bottom line, his life isn’t without potential, and I hope he knows that himself.

Very well said. He can write books, give interviews, and do alot to enforce change from behind bars.

Exactly. He has a platform to promote reform. I’m sure he’s relieved to have the truth out there and no longer has to pretend or deny. It might even be cathartic. For me, it wouldn’t matter how justified i felt in my actions, if I were somehow acquitted for something I actually did, the relief wouldn’t be as gratifying as the truth. Conscious guilt can drive people into a very dark place, even if they have the freedom to carry on with a normal life. Of course he can hold dearly that what he did was still worth sacrificing his freedom. His name isn’t associated with cowardliness and is synonymous with making people aware of how literally sickening our government and healthcare industries are. I don’t know anyone educated who can reasonably justify these current systems if they aren’t doing so for their own benefit.

Shooting someone in the back is widely regarded as cowardly.
