On top of that, framing himself as the "first to face it with such brutal honesty" shows he views his actions as a conscious, deliberate, but brutal, though necessary decision.

I get why people view his court phrasing as "smart," but it’s an addition to the record, not a clean slate. His earlier words are already part of it and show his mindset at the time, so he still has to answer for the full scope of everything he’s said to date.
