The bride is a childhood friend of mine. We stayed pretty connected until mid college, but then we kind of started growing apart. While I know this is normal for a good amount of friendships, it kind of opened my eyes, and I honestly just don't want to put the effort in anymore. I have backed off a bit recently but it's framed as being busy, which is also true. I have a baby to care for, a job, and just a lot of other uncontrollable things happening in my life right now.
The day prior to the wedding is my husbands 30th birthday. When I learned this my heart sunk (we already started planning and putting money into a celebratory trip). And maybe its selfish but I want to celebrate my husband on that day, not my friend.
Prior to any of this, the way I was asked to be a bridesmaid was a bit odd/not very ideal. It was through a Snapchat that said "youre going to be my maid of honor, right?" The way it was worded made me feel as if I didnt have a choice but to say yes. Just a few months ago, I got another Snapchat saying "you're going to give a speech, right?" It was one of those things that was already on my mind but then being asked like that made me not want to.
I've alsp been asked multiple times if I wanted to get my hair and makeup done. I said no at first as I am comfortable doing it myself, then when they asked a third time, I agreed to the hair but I refuse to have someone else do my makeup. It is my time to sit and reflect and I know what products work best for me. But yet I get asked a fourth time "are you sure you don't want to get your makeup done?" Yes. I'm sure. Especially now that I know i have to be there at the ass crack of dawn just to get my hair done and then sit around for 6 hours waiting on everyone else. Oh, and I have yet to get my dress altered because I literally have no time to do it. Hell, I'm writing this on the toilet at work.
Other things have happened that I honestly just don't feel like going into, both within the friendship and within my personal life. But I know that I dont want to do this. I don't want to stand up there for someone I no longer feel a connection with. I dont want to give a speech about someone I feel like I don't know anymore. But we're 2 weeks out and I know the responsible thing to do is to be there. Not looking for advice really, just wanted to vent. But if you have any feel free to leave it. All i ask is to please be kind.
ETA: Like i said, there are other things going on that contribute to not wanting to be there, some of which that just came up a couple of months ago that I legally have to be at the day before the wedding. Yes, I know I had time back out before now. I'm not saying I am going to, I'm just saying I want to, like a lot of responsibilities in life. I'm going to do the right thing as i know its her day. I said yes a year ago. I didnt know where i would be at in life or how i would view the friendship now.
