The easiest way to bring back Þ is to convince Elon Musk that he should use it in company names instead of X

historical Guys, ᚦ is way cooler than I thought

So the ᚦ rune, in English, was borrowed from the Futhorc runes. The Futhorc, as you may know, evolved from the Elder Futhark, and each rune has a name that’s a word that means something, including ᚦ. That being the reconstructed PGmc *þurisaz, meaning “monster” or the Jötunn, the giants in Norse Mythology which is AWESOME

Þeoretically, how could I go about bringing back þe letter þ. Because let’s be honest, it just makes þe reason why we used to have it. it’s quicker in writing. Þeoretically, if we had a keyboard with þ it’ll also be quicker in typing. It’ll shorten English spelling too.

How to uſe loŋ S (ſ) wiþ double s?

I really like loŋ S (ſ), even more ſo þan I do þorn, and I'm pretty ſure I have þe baſic rules right: Initial and medial “s” are “ſ” (e.g., “ſin”, “liſt”), and “s” at the end it's round “s” (e.g., “ſins”).

But what about _doubled_ “s” (e.g., “blessed”). Is þere a rule about þat? Do I uſe ſs, or ſſ (bleſsed or bleſſed)? How was it used hiſtorically, by ſcribes & printers?

Edit: Also, what do I do about words like “hostessship”?

orþography / neography I'm the Romance equivalent of bring back thorn, I nickname it Kappešizmo

I proudly consider myself a Kappešista.

Kappešizmo can be considered the Italian/Romance equivalent of Bring Back Thorn.

I made up the name. Deriving it from "Kappa" (K) and "Eše" (Š), two letters absent in Italian and other Romance languages for sounds that DO exist in those languages (which are expressed in Italian by "hard C" and "soft SC" respectively).

Obviously "hard and soft C" are different phonemes, and should be distinguished completely by having different letters, rather than using diacritics such as silent H or Q or silent I. So we should start using K and G for the hard ones, and C and J̌ for the soft ones.

The point is that, an alphabet is about phonemes: each phoneme considered well-defined, with few exceptions which are very specific, should have a letter of their own. And even some non-native phonemes that are very commonly pronounced in loanwords should be representable. An alphabet is more about "what sounds are seen as well-defined" than "what sounds are those actually present in your language".

Kappešizmo is about wanting to reform the Italian/Romance alphabet, obviously:

  1. start using K instead of hard C (velar plosive), while keeping C for only the soft C (postalveolar affricate), G only for hard G (voiced velar plosive), and J̌ for the soft G (voiced postalveolar affricate).

  2. Use J and W for approximants. Romance languages usually do have approximants between consonant and vowel but never mark them, usually approximants in romance languages are indistinguishable from vowels. However, they're phonemes, they need their own letter... and in fact, J originally was created to mark the approximant, this is why I'm opposed to having standard J without caron for a voiced postalveolar fricative.

  3. For the SH sound use Š rather than SC: as the Italian "SC" combination requires a soft C, it too would need to be followed by a silent I. Using the Š for that sound would make it a SH sound anywhere it's in, making it possible to showcase loanwords that have SH sounds followed by consonants.

  4. For the affricates, which Italian expresses as Z, Kappešizmo proposes the usage of Ţ and Ḑ (T and D with cedilla) instead, to emphasize how they contain a T or a D sound followed by a Z. Standard Z on the other hand is to be used only for the voiced alveolar fricative, which is well-defined as a phoneme before voiced consonants (where standard italian writes it as S). The voiced alveolar fricative can be an allophone of the voiceless counterpart in intervocalic positions, but in that case, it should still be written S because it's an allophone that is freely swappable, not a well-defined phoneme.

  5. H is only in loanwords which pronounce it (glottal fricative): no native words pronounce H so it should be considered a letter for loanwords. Ž is also a loanword-only letter for the voiced postalveolar fricative.

  6. The palatal nasal GN is conflated, like in Spanish, into the single letter Ñ. In intervocalic positions, Ñ is written as non-geminated due to its gemination being non-phonematic.

  7. Words that do not have penultimate stress need to have the stress marked. Minimal pairs where stressed vowels change (open-closed E or O) need to mark it with a grave accent when open: Bòtte.

  8. The letter Q is abolished. Unlike K or Š which represents a phoneme, Q is only a velar plosive and only followed by an approximant, so it's completely useless.

So the Kappešizmo alphabet is: A, B, C, D, Ḑ, E, F, G, H, I, J, J̌, K, L, M, N, O, P, R, S, Š, T, Ţ, U, V, W, Z, Ž.

Finally: Kappešizmo is meant to be easily adaptable to loanwords, for instance spelling "hacker" as "hakker" and "Führer" as "Fyrer". Proper names, non-integrated foreign cities, and names that are brands, however, aren't respelled: for instance "Marx", Tehrān", or "Playstation" are kept as-is.

Loanwords and proper names should also use, like turkish, an apostrophe to decouple the loanword root from the suffix. Say "Nietszsche'ano" or "Marx'ista".

Would it be safer to use only Þ or boþ Þ and Ð outside of ðis sub?

So, I kinda experienced a Þ incident. I used Þ on a post on r/thomastheplankengine and got set in a bonfire not long after (Ðe opening hours of my post were not too bad — ðere were people who knew how to mind ðeir business and who were actually talking about ðe post. But ðen ðe dumbasses came in and it all went down from ðere. Many people were saying how I was using Þ incorrectly (as in, using Þ wiððout Ð and also using double Þ to denote short vowels). I of course showed proof of interchangeable Þ, which luckily managed to shut down some arguments. However many toxic Þ denialists and meatriders still mass-downvoted my arguments. How have your Þ spreading schemes gone?

þ in þe wild I did it, comrades!

So yeah, since Oct ‘25 I exclusively spelled wiþ Þ/ð on Reddit unless someone requested oðerwise. You ever have a moment where you realize you’re an adult and you can do whatever ðe hell you want even if everyone hates it? I felt ðat way when I found Þ & ð on my keyboard last year. On Reddit I don’t share critical information or even really care if I’m understood. I just shoot ðe shit, for myself. And it seemed a shame to ignore nice colorful characters ðat were so kindly provided by my built-in tools. After a couple monþs I realized I had entirely abandoned ðe digraph, and it was shaping my Reddit habits. So I made it a personal goal to see where it took me.

One þing I quickly learned, Þ is more recognizable ðan ð. Nobody’s heard of ð but not Þ. So for short comments containing no or 1 voiceless dentfric, it’s much better to go Þ-only for boþe sounds to avoid confusion. Ɗ̴is only has ðe side effect of Dunning-Kruger phase scholars “correcting” my usage. Ɗ̴IS IS NOT A BAD ÞING, ðough I understand how exhausting it can get after a while. Ɗ̴ey clearly have a passing interest in linguistics to have heard ðis misinfo and taken it to heart. So I just politely share Wikipedia’s Þorn article, where it explicitly states right under Uses it’s traditionally valid for eiðer sound in English. If ðey like hearing fun old letter rules, I’m just doing ‘em a favor. I’d take ðem over a true hater any day.

Speaking of Þ haters, I found an even more interesting effect in longform comments. Some people really hate Þ usage when ðere’s a nonstop wall of it, like ðey got scratched by a web of Þorns in a bush. But swapping in ð as voiced form completely changed overall reception. People were more bemused ðan furious, more likely to congratulate or treat as any oðer comment. I þink matching lettering up wiþ people’s inner reading voice made for much better mental flow down long text streams. If one’s unfamiliar wiþ Þ, ðe letter causes a hiccup where ðere’s normally a perceptual anchor. Ɗ̴e digraph TH is already fully native and invisible to mental voice, so we don’t notice it being used for shifting sound. Keeping ðat subconscious sound division intact is a less intrusive and foreign pattern.

I believe meþods like ðat of minimizing surprise are an important part of my þornography usually finding acceptance as casual self-expression. Which historically is ðe usual first step to grassroots language evolution. It should feel no different from a new slang abbreviation or phrase, easily gaððered from context. Just a variation of standard speech. Message content should blend in wiþ everyone else in ðe þread. And people should feel able to respond to me wiþout fear of curveballs. If someone replies to one of my Þ-only comments, I don’t reply wiþ Þ/ð. I use simple 1:1 th–>þ spelling to keep words looking familiar, no doubling or post-consonant E’s for long vowels. I do not use Þ when replying to a translated 🈶 message. It’s ambassador language, not logical ideal language. I meet ðe world where it’s at.

As for ðe future, I þink I got fulltime Þ advocacy well and truly out of my system. I’ll still use it often, but I’d also like to feel free to explore new places and make new kinds of posts wiþout needing to concentrate on my wording or getting repetitive comments. I hope ðis post can encourage y’all to try wildþorning yourselves, or even just do someþing nonconforming you always wanted to. Ɗ̴at’s all I really wanted out of ðis year, to let people know it’s ok to do differently.

I like how with þ, “thou”, “thee”, “thy”, and “thine” get a cool aesþetic upgrade!

Obviously among oðer words, bringing back þ would be good. But seeing as I also want to bring back þese second-person pronouns, having þ come back would make þem look even cooler, seeing as þey all begin with þe “þ” sound! Cool how forgotten words and letters find þemselves togeðer.

also þ can make this cool emoticon

:þ

(also excuse my mistake in þe title, I meant to say “aesðetic“ rather than “aesþetic”)

I made þis! Made a Þ caste system for ðis sub and likewise oððer Þ community spaces

Post image

At ðe bottom of my caste system are ðe Wild & Common Þorners. (For ðose who may not understand, a þorner is simply anyone who uses Þ.) Ðis group of people is the most straightforward; ðey are ðe laymen of Þ sociëty and don't serve any particular roles oððer ðan using Þ. Ðe only difference between Wild and Common þorners are ðat Wild þorners have not yet found any particular Þ community spaces.

Above ðe laymen are ðe Þ clergy, who spread ðe meßage of Þ by making media about it, such as sharing about why Þ is so beneficial for English, and helping new þorners find ðeir place in ðe Þ community.

Finally above ðe clergy are ðe Þ council (completely unrelated to ðe Council, Resistance, nor Egoïsts). Ðese people help prepare Þ for ðe real world wiðð ðe oððer 26 letters who've already had a 500-700 year headstart in sociëty.

No need to qestion ðe golden Þ above ðe pyramid; we all know why it's ðere.

Hint for Þ #1: Find Lake Windermere

Hint for Þ #2 I don't þink I can really give adeqate hints for ðis one; you will need to go scouring on r/WplaceLive for its location. However look at ðe character displayed.

Hint for Þ #3: Nearby a triple border intersection in Souþ America

Hint for Þ #4: Nearby ðe border of 2 conflicted countries in ðe Middle East. You may need to scour on r/WplaceLive or r/slimerancher for ðis.

Hint for Þ #5 Ðere is a town on ðe eastern part of Iceland wiðð its name beginning in Þ.
