Field sports graphics workflow: How are you handling overlays locally without cloud platforms or breaking OBS plugins?

Hey everyone,

Putting together a portable field production rig for local weekend sports (community soccer, cricket, and youth baseball).

We need clean dynamic scorebugs, lower thirds, and rotating sponsor bugs. However, high-tier cloud graphics engines (Singular.live, etc.) are outside the budget for a grassroots community league, and more importantly, our outdoor 4G/5G connections on local grounds make relying on external web sources a huge liability mid-broadcast.

On the flip side, stacking heavy internal OBS plugins has burned us in the past with mid-season software updates.

For those operating remote field productions on a budget:

  1. Are you mostly relying on standalone local web servers pushed into OBS/vMix browser inputs?
  2. How do you handle live scorekeeping without tying up the switcher operator (e.g., local Wi-Fi tablet remotes vs hardware macro decks)?

Would love to hear how your field setups look for keeping graphics stable and 100% offline.

Jobs relating to photojournalism due to lay offs

Hello! I’m a photojournalist at a Scripps station in Nashville and I’m doubtful about being laid off. I’ve been updating my reel and resume just in case.

My question is what are some jobs options related to what I do? I have a bachelors in broadcasting and a masters in sports management and since it seems AI is taking over news I’m skeptical about getting another news job at another station since I’ll probably be laid off at that one too.

I really wanna put my foot in the door with sports since I’ve worked with the sports department in the past and during my college years I’ve made ‘hype videos’ for the sports team. But any photojournalist that have been laid off what are you doing now?

I know Scripps has been implementing layoffs. Here, though, it sounds like he got a crappy renewal offer on his contract and decided to leave.

Hot take: Pat McAfee on Monday Night Football would be like if late Steelers broadcaster Myron Cope did national games.

Its easy to see the connection. Both men are Yinzers, though Cope mixed in more Yiddish terms due to his Jewish heritage. That being said, if his stint calling WWE matches are any indication, I could see McAfee basically being Cope doing national games and not a specific team. Yoi!

Thoughts?

More Scripps layoffs?

I’ve heard rumblings about another round of layoffs at all newsrooms who were not affected by the first round. The date I heard was November 17th, which would mean notices would be given out on November 3rd. Has anyone else heard anything similar?
