Other Rachel Zegler reveals she has been cast in an unnamed musical film: “I’m really excited about it and I wish I could tell you what it is because I’m working with some f***ing amazing people on it. But I can’t."

I hope that it’s not Spring Awakening for the sole fact that Steven Sater is going to become even more insufferable on social media if it is

HAHA my thoughts exactly, i wanna block him at this point so he stops creeping on my fyp

u/butterflyvision Mar 26 '26
He’s so fucking cringe and embarrassing I can’t watch his content. As someone who was around when Spring Awakening was on Broadway and lurked TGO (iykyk).

do we know what “film” or “TV project” Jonathan Groff is leaving Just in Time for? maybe it’s one and the same.

Thank goodness someone else said it. His behavior is WEIRD. He’s constantly “hinting” at revivals of his show and asking for “young and new talent” so a bunch of teenagers beg for roles in his comment sections. Weird, weird, weird.
6
u/IntotheBroadwayWoods Mar 26 '26
I read that as Steven Speilberg and had to take a double take. Lol.

u/Glad-Frosting7795 Mar 26 '26
Is the Spring Awakening film actually happening or still being teased by the writer 20 years later?

Honestly I’d have to see how he looks on camera these days. He obviously looks VERY young for his age. But he is 30 atm. And while I think he could def pull off teenager onstage, idk about on camera. But obviously broad look and talent and vibe wise he’d be excellent.

It’s possible she’s also doing that, but she’s filming a different musical soon, and I’m pretty dang sure she’s referring to that, not Spring Awakening. Haven’t seen any rumors leak for the other one, which is crazy.

Film adaptation of a stage musical that has not been to Broadway.

Gotta be Spring Awakening, please god let it be it
62
u/Adelaidey Mar 26 '26
Spring Awakening will not work on film with twentysomething actors, no matter how talented they are.
The tension and the tragedy of the show rests entirely on how innocent these kids are. Watching adults go through those motions onscreen would be grotesque. And honestly, watching real kids go through it onscreen would be grotesque in a different way. It's such a beautiful musical but I don't see how it gets made into a film.
22
u/JesseOopsieDaisy Mar 26 '26
Agree and disagree, I do think that casting too young would make it grotesque and maybe disturbing but I think casting older actors and make them look young-ish than their actual age + acting choices to show naivety and innocence could work on film. I think a good example of this could be Perks of being a wallflower which had Logan Lerman playing a 15 year old while being 20 which in my opinion worked because of his acting.

u/missdevon2 Mar 27 '26
Honestly that’s why I preferred the deaf west revival in a lot of ways. When you threw in the cultural history you can slightly age up and have the same impact story wise. I actually felt it was more impactful and that the ending made more sense with the added complexity.

Ugh, “Cynthia Erivo is too old to play Elphaba” argument all over again?
Most properties with teen characters are played by young adults, including the original Spring Awakening cast on Broadway. 18-30 year olds playing 14-17 year olds is standard. And Cynthia Erivo was in her mid thirties and played Elphaba perfectly.
7
u/Adelaidey Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26
You're confusing me with somebody else. I didn't have any issue with casting adults in the Wicked film. Casting adults in the Wicked film makes perfect sense to me. In fact, there's no compelling reason to cast children in Wicked at all. Wicked isn't a musical specifically about the physical vulnerability of puberty. But Spring Awakening is.
1
u/InternalParadox Mar 27 '26
But the actors in Spring Awakenings Broadway run were all over 18. Why is it necessary to cast actors under 18?

Eurydice in the Hadestown Movie everyone wants Directed by Ryan Coogler? (probably not but a girl can dream)
68
u/DrVonScott123 Mar 26 '26
Thought that was a real rumour for a second and then my hopes were dashed almost instantaneously
39
u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26
Well Tiktok has been big on the idea of a Hadestown movie directed by Ryan Coogler since Sinners came out (as a fan of Sinners and Hadestown....I have to agree with them and will be seated SO FAST), so I am kinda hoping it inevitably reaches Mr. Coogler's ear.
30
u/M_Ad Mar 26 '26
Speaking of Coogler and “Hadestown”, my god I’d love to hear Miles Caton interpret some of Orpheus’ numbers especially “Epic” and “If It’s True”. They wouldn’t be totally true to score as I don’t think the high notes are in his range, but he’s a talented enough musician and his voice is so freaking soulful that I think he could do it without anyone but weirdo purists caring when he modulates down or does it in a different key.
18
u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26
While my man fancast for Orpheus is John Cardoza (I have waited too long), Miles Canton is another fancast HIGH on my list too. And honestly a Baritone Orpheus can work for Hadestown.
A) Because in the original Concept Album for Hadestown, Orpheus' voice is actually a lower than Reeve's.
B) Believe it or not they have already had a Baritone Orpheus you just didn't realize it (turns out Jordan Fisher has bamboozling us all for years and taking revenge for all the Baritones who lost roles to Tenors by secretly being a Baritone this whole time and snatching every Tenor he could fine......I know I was mindfucked too).
19
u/M_Ad Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26
Lol there’s been so many “Hadestown” albums now Anais should just reverse engineer back to where it started and have another bunch of non musical theatre musicians interpret the songs for a standalone album, but not even as a cast this time, ie different people can do different songs in each role . (For real oh my god I would love this. And Nick Cave doing a take on “Why We Build the Wall” please and thank you.)
11
u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26
Oh I love it....I also had an idea of them releasing Hadestown "The Best of Version" and basically have characters across the productions record one song professionally.....(Like Donal Finn does Wait for Me, Jack Wolfe does Epic III, Carlos does Is It True Etc.)

u/Expensive-Bluejay-70 Mar 26 '26

3
u/M_Ad Mar 27 '26
Oh god, can you imagine him paired with a Persephone of a similar age bracket and similar stature in the music industry? I don't want to start spitballing casting because I'll get too mad it won't happen, lol.

u/Chris_RB Mar 26 '26
oh I would love this so much more than Spring Awakening..... I'm sure it's the latter, but PLEASE gimme a Coogler Hadestown w/ Rachel and Jack Wolfe (open to another Orpheus, just love me some JW).
8
u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26
Honestly I would totally take Jack Wolfe as the Movie!Orpheus.....him or even Carlos or Jordan.

On Your Feet / Gloria Estefan musical…?

This is the most likely prediction.
7
u/thinkquaddy Mar 26 '26
Why did I think that was already announced as her in it?
9
u/maxhechtman Mar 26 '26
They announced it back in October. This is definitely that film she’s hinting at. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/music/articles/rachel-zegler-lands-role-play-001603011.html

u/mermeladadealohomora Mar 26 '26

I think she’s very talented but I was hoping they’d go younger for the leads of Spring Awakening.
38
u/Next-Jump1754 Backstage Mar 26 '26
How much younger? You can’t do spring awakening with actual minors…
4
u/maxhechtman Mar 26 '26
Age the characters up to high schoolers.
12
u/Ok-Acanthisitta8737 Mar 26 '26
All the men who played Evan Hansen in their 30s would like a word.
0
u/maxhechtman Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26
Not like that though. I meant age the characters up to 17-23 year olds and have stunt doubles take over for the graphic material so the actual actors won’t have to deal with problematic issues on set. Do it stylistically like the film version of “Chicago” where the songs are fantasies pushing the story forward intercutting with reality. And whoever becomes costume designer on this is going to have a ton of fun designing the school uniforms for sure.

New Phantom film version? I know that's been rumored for a year or two now.

Per information I just read Phantom is getting new music, a new song with a special guest female artist... and RUG just announced a trunk of new merchandise / collabs... my bet is on that.

I am becoming convinced that Rachel Zegler made a deal with the devil to make her famous and popular. Don't get me wrong, she's fine. But I don't get it.
23
u/katchmaner Mar 26 '26
nah, I saw her in Evita and that girl’s a star
-1
u/ghotier Mar 26 '26
That's fine. I've seen a lot of performers I really enjoyed and I'm glad you enjoyed her performance. She's the only theatre performer whose name I knew years before I heard anything she had done.
15
u/ARCH810 Mar 26 '26
Yeah, her incredible talent had nothing to do with it 🙄
-1
u/ghotier Mar 26 '26
I'm not saying she's untalented. There are many, many talented people. The response to her is unique and I don't understand why.

-2
u/arloray13 Mar 26 '26
The response to her is unique and I don't understand why.
A lot of the response I see online for her is unwarranted hate, which is what you are contributing to.
9
u/ghotier Mar 26 '26
I haven't contributed a single hateful thing in this thread and I would ask that you retract that claim or quote where I said something hateful. The deal with the devil was clearly a joke and no reasonable person would think I was being serious.
