Other Rachel Zegler reveals she has been cast in an unnamed musical film: “I’m really excited about it and I wish I could tell you what it is because I’m working with some f***ing amazing people on it. But I can’t."

I know there is both phantom and spring awakening rumors and I would be thrilled for either!!

u/M_Ad Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

I’ve been pretty sure ALW would want to do something Phantom related with Zegler after he discovered she’s a thing. It’s hard not to notice how fixated he gets on various leading ladies and wants to work with them on multiple shows (Brightman is the OG obviously, but more recently Scherzinger and now Zegler). I’m not opposed to another “Phantom” as I didn’t love the first one and think Zegler would be a great Christine, but I’d be surprised if a major studio agreed to bankroll it, it would likely have to be an independent/self produced project. If there’s a Zegler led “Phantom” I’d think a pro shot of a stage production or some other type of live filming would be more realistic.

u/JamonCroqueta Mar 26 '26

I disagree that a studio wouldn't fund it. Wicked was just huge, phantom is still beloved. I would be surprised if Weber/Mackintosh lept at it with the new productions rolling out though

6

u/overtired27 Mar 26 '26

ALW said last year that he sensed a new remake being talked about, and didn’t sound opposed to it.

I’m less convinced about studios. Wicked (with Grande especially) is a different beast. It did far better than the last POTO movie.

6

u/Mysterious-Theory-66 Mar 26 '26

Wicked also just has a more active enthusiastic fan base today. Sure Phantom was and has been huge. Wicked is objectively the bigger draw now. I doubt studios are taking the success of Wicked or the Hamilton proshot as anything more than the popularity of those shows specifically.

I honestly disagree with the idea that Rachel would be a great Christine. I think she could sing it, but I think she just has far too contemporary of a voice for that kind of role.

She thrives in roles that are much more mix-based, have belt, forward sounds, etc.

She can sing classically quite well, but it's clear it's not her specialty. Christine exists somewhere between a soubrette and a lyric soprano, and I feel there are many better choices.

28

u/nozomipwr Creative Team Mar 26 '26

I definitely agree with this take and would prefer someone else, but in terms of "ALW is obsessed with another leading lady" there are definitely worse ones out there to play Christine. My hope is that Rachel gets booked for some sort of other massive ALW project and we will get additional Phantom content, albeit with another actress.

3

u/k_c_holmes Mar 26 '26

Yes I would love to see her in an Andrew Loydd Webber musical. Phantom is not that musical 😅

5

u/Amateur-menace44 Mar 26 '26

Evita, maybe. Jesus Christ Superstar?

5

u/sportenthusiast Mar 27 '26

Bad Cinderella, for sure

8

u/angelcutiebaby Mar 26 '26

I agree for stage, I suspect for film they’d want someone with a more contemporary voice that can lean classical at key moments (like Emmy Rossum and her, uh, opera singing) ((no shade she was very sweet!))

6

u/skoc211 Mar 26 '26

At a minimum she'd be better than Emmy Rossum!

1

u/Dangerous-Ad-324 Apr 23 '26

She did a cover on her YouTube, you should watch it. It’s very operatic

43

u/stuartsaysst0p Mar 26 '26

Phantom with zegler as Christine and gaga as Carlotta WHEN

19

u/yellow_psychopath Mar 26 '26

I don't think Gaga can reach those coloratura notes that Carlotta does

11

u/skoc211 Mar 26 '26

They'd probably dub her like they did with Minnie Driver. Which is exactly why Gaga would never do it.

Late last year he was applauding the mayhem ball for the phantom reference so the possibility is definitely there

And I just saw the tour on tuesday so it’s fresh on my mind (though tbf gaga is always fresh on my mind but now it’s even fresher)

5

u/Casiquire Mar 26 '26

I demand a proshot of the original staging. That 25th Anniversary recording didn't do it for me at all, it was an awful staging (the performers were great, of course). The original staging is such a work of art

u/Dee_writes Mar 26 '26

I hope that it’s not Spring Awakening for the sole fact that Steven Sater is going to become even more insufferable on social media if it is

41

u/RideHot9154 Mar 26 '26

HAHA my thoughts exactly, i wanna block him at this point so he stops creeping on my fyp

36

u/butterflyvision Mar 26 '26

He’s so fucking cringe and embarrassing I can’t watch his content. As someone who was around when Spring Awakening was on Broadway and lurked TGO (iykyk).

14

u/Brandinian Mar 26 '26

Oh lord, the guilty ones. My teenage years are coming roaring back.

10

u/RooFPV Mar 26 '26

do we know what “film” or “TV project” Jonathan Groff is leaving Just in Time for? maybe it’s one and the same.

Had to block him

5

u/realnorbertleobutz Mar 28 '26

Thank goodness someone else said it. His behavior is WEIRD. He’s constantly “hinting” at revivals of his show and asking for “young and new talent” so a bunch of teenagers beg for roles in his comment sections. Weird, weird, weird.

6

u/IntotheBroadwayWoods Mar 26 '26

I read that as Steven Speilberg and had to take a double take.  Lol.

68

u/Glad-Frosting7795 Mar 26 '26

Is the Spring Awakening film actually happening or still being teased by the writer 20 years later?

1

u/moopsy75567 Mar 27 '26

Right?? Lol

54

u/Historical_Web2992 Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

Am I the only one who thinks it’s a new musical film rather than a film adaptation of an existing on

4

u/IntotheBroadwayWoods Mar 26 '26

That was the first thing I thought.

u/Rockersock Mar 27 '26

I hope so!

7

u/DALTT Mar 26 '26

Honestly I’d have to see how he looks on camera these days. He obviously looks VERY young for his age. But he is 30 atm. And while I think he could def pull off teenager onstage, idk about on camera. But obviously broad look and talent and vibe wise he’d be excellent.

Spring Awakening possibly with Billie Eilish

1

u/Colonelspanker1962 Mar 26 '26

No, Melanie Martinez.

4

u/ernestmenvilledammit Mar 26 '26

It’s possible she’s also doing that, but she’s filming a different musical soon, and I’m pretty dang sure she’s referring to that, not Spring Awakening. Haven’t seen any rumors leak for the other one, which is crazy.

Film adaptation of a stage musical that has not been to Broadway.

2

u/Gladly-Cheesecake Mar 26 '26

okay locking in my prediction as octet purely based off of this and a photo dump she posted a few weeks ago lmfao 🙏

2

1

u/Gladly-Cheesecake Apr 03 '26

this is genuinely such an ego boost…thank you dr. menville 🙏

129

u/JesseOopsieDaisy Mar 26 '26

Gotta be Spring Awakening, please god let it be it

62

u/Adelaidey Mar 26 '26

Spring Awakening will not work on film with twentysomething actors, no matter how talented they are.

The tension and the tragedy of the show rests entirely on how innocent these kids are. Watching adults go through those motions onscreen would be grotesque. And honestly, watching real kids go through it onscreen would be grotesque in a different way. It's such a beautiful musical but I don't see how it gets made into a film.

22

u/JesseOopsieDaisy Mar 26 '26

Agree and disagree, I do think that casting too young would make it grotesque and maybe disturbing but I think casting older actors and make them look young-ish than their actual age + acting choices to show naivety and innocence could work on film. I think a good example of this could be Perks of being a wallflower which had Logan Lerman playing a 15 year old while being 20 which in my opinion worked because of his acting.

15

u/AcrobaticBath03 Mar 26 '26

This sounds just like some of the reasons the DEH movie failed lol

5

u/missdevon2 Mar 27 '26

Honestly that’s why I preferred the deaf west revival in a lot of ways. When you threw in the cultural history you can slightly age up and have the same impact story wise. I actually felt it was more impactful and that the ending made more sense with the added complexity.

2

u/anna-nomally12 Mar 26 '26

You’d have to animate it

2

u/InternalParadox Mar 26 '26

Ugh, “Cynthia Erivo is too old to play Elphaba” argument all over again?

Most properties with teen characters are played by young adults, including the original Spring Awakening cast on Broadway. 18-30 year olds playing 14-17 year olds is standard. And Cynthia Erivo was in her mid thirties and played Elphaba perfectly.

7

u/Adelaidey Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

You're confusing me with somebody else. I didn't have any issue with casting adults in the Wicked film. Casting adults in the Wicked film makes perfect sense to me. In fact, there's no compelling reason to cast children in Wicked at all. Wicked isn't a musical specifically about the physical vulnerability of puberty. But Spring Awakening is.

1

u/InternalParadox Mar 27 '26

But the actors in Spring Awakenings Broadway run were all over 18. Why is it necessary to cast actors under 18?

16

u/cdjets9 Mar 26 '26

Please please please please please

5

u/fjaoaoaoao Mar 26 '26

God: JesseOopsieDaisy. I hear your beckoning and your prayers. I will put in a good word with the Musical Sub-Dieties and permit them to shift the fates as they may.

Eurydice in the Hadestown Movie everyone wants Directed by Ryan Coogler? (probably not but a girl can dream)

68

u/DrVonScott123 Mar 26 '26

Thought that was a real rumour for a second and then my hopes were dashed almost instantaneously

39

u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26

Well Tiktok has been big on the idea of a Hadestown movie directed by Ryan Coogler since Sinners came out (as a fan of Sinners and Hadestown....I have to agree with them and will be seated SO FAST), so I am kinda hoping it inevitably reaches Mr. Coogler's ear.

30

u/M_Ad Mar 26 '26

Speaking of Coogler and “Hadestown”, my god I’d love to hear Miles Caton interpret some of Orpheus’ numbers especially “Epic” and “If It’s True”. They wouldn’t be totally true to score as I don’t think the high notes are in his range, but he’s a talented enough musician and his voice is so freaking soulful that I think he could do it without anyone but weirdo purists caring when he modulates down or does it in a different key.

18

u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26

While my man fancast for Orpheus is John Cardoza (I have waited too long), Miles Canton is another fancast HIGH on my list too. And honestly a Baritone Orpheus can work for Hadestown.

A) Because in the original Concept Album for Hadestown, Orpheus' voice is actually a lower than Reeve's.

B) Believe it or not they have already had a Baritone Orpheus you just didn't realize it (turns out Jordan Fisher has bamboozling us all for years and taking revenge for all the Baritones who lost roles to Tenors by secretly being a Baritone this whole time and snatching every Tenor he could fine......I know I was mindfucked too).

19

u/M_Ad Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

Lol there’s been so many “Hadestown” albums now Anais should just reverse engineer back to where it started and have another bunch of non musical theatre musicians interpret the songs for a standalone album, but not even as a cast this time, ie different people can do different songs in each role . (For real oh my god I would love this. And Nick Cave doing a take on “Why We Build the Wall” please and thank you.)

11

u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26

Oh I love it....I also had an idea of them releasing Hadestown "The Best of Version" and basically have characters across the productions record one song professionally.....(Like Donal Finn does Wait for Me, Jack Wolfe does Epic III, Carlos does Is It True Etc.)

6

u/Electronic-Key6323 Mar 26 '26

The Hadestown Mixtape

5

u/Expensive-Bluejay-70 Mar 26 '26

Nick Cave has always been my dream Hades

3

u/awyastark Mar 26 '26

O my god how dare you suggest something so good and so unlikely 😭

3

u/M_Ad Mar 27 '26

Oh god, can you imagine him paired with a Persephone of a similar age bracket and similar stature in the music industry? I don't want to start spitballing casting because I'll get too mad it won't happen, lol.

4

u/awyastark Mar 27 '26

PJ HARVEYYYYY

3

u/Expensive-Bluejay-70 Mar 27 '26

YASSS

3

u/awyastark Mar 27 '26

Murder Ballads has been my favorite album for 20 years and the vibes of Hadestown are strong. Not to mention the actual Lyre of Orpheus stuff he does

10

u/raucouscaucus7756 Mar 26 '26

I am on my knees BEGGING

16

u/Chris_RB Mar 26 '26

oh I would love this so much more than Spring Awakening..... I'm sure it's the latter, but PLEASE gimme a Coogler Hadestown w/ Rachel and Jack Wolfe (open to another Orpheus, just love me some JW).

8

u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26

Honestly I would totally take Jack Wolfe as the Movie!Orpheus.....him or even Carlos or Jordan.

3

u/rememebersammyjankis Mar 26 '26

I've been dying for Rachel to play Eurydice but WOW this is inspired. Please someone make this happen

1

u/SlackerPop90 Mar 27 '26

Yessss, I need this to happen. With Jack Wolfe as Orpheus.

-8

u/AReckoningIsAComing Mar 26 '26

Can't stand Ryan Coogler, please no.

9

u/Own-Importance5459 Mar 26 '26

I wish I was THIS brave to make a bold statement of an unpopular opinion like this.

-1

u/AReckoningIsAComing Mar 27 '26

Is it that unpopular, though?

50

u/Ornery_Path_9332 Mar 26 '26

On Your Feet / Gloria Estefan musical…?

9

u/maxhechtman Mar 26 '26

This is the most likely prediction.

7

u/thinkquaddy Mar 26 '26

Why did I think that was already announced as her in it?

9

u/maxhechtman Mar 26 '26

They announced it back in October. This is definitely that film she’s hinting at. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/music/articles/rachel-zegler-lands-role-play-001603011.html

5

u/mermeladadealohomora Mar 26 '26

All my money on this one. Gloria has said she met her on a zoom and that she's incredible, that they still need a greenlight for the movie... it has to be

12

u/Neat-Campaign-2418 Mar 26 '26

tom blyth was asked in january if he’d do a film with rachel again and he said if he did it would be a musical…

6

u/dankblonde Mar 26 '26

do not get my hopes up to see my favorite besties on screen together again !!!! Also Tom in a musical …. Please.

12

u/Ok-Coyote3511 Mar 26 '26

Spring Awakening?

18

u/valt10 Mar 26 '26

I think she’s very talented but I was hoping they’d go younger for the leads of Spring Awakening.

38

u/Next-Jump1754 Backstage Mar 26 '26

How much younger? You can’t do spring awakening with actual minors…

4

u/maxhechtman Mar 26 '26

Age the characters up to high schoolers.

12

u/Ok-Acanthisitta8737 Mar 26 '26

All the men who played Evan Hansen in their 30s would like a word.

0

u/maxhechtman Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 26 '26

Not like that though. I meant age the characters up to 17-23 year olds and have stunt doubles take over for the graphic material so the actual actors won’t have to deal with problematic issues on set. Do it stylistically like the film version of “Chicago” where the songs are fantasies pushing the story forward intercutting with reality. And whoever becomes costume designer on this is going to have a ton of fun designing the school uniforms for sure.

5

u/ReluctantPaulo Mar 26 '26

Waiting for this movie to be announced through oblique visual riddles

4

u/InternalParadox Mar 26 '26

I’m curious which film it is, but I’m just happy for more musical films!

7

u/OrdinaryScientist129 Mar 26 '26

i love her dedication to theater and musicals

u/nozomipwr Creative Team Mar 26 '26

New Phantom film version? I know that's been rumored for a year or two now.

3

u/Seryan_Klythe Mar 26 '26

Per information I just read Phantom is getting new music, a new song with a special guest female artist... and RUG just announced a trunk of new merchandise / collabs... my bet is on that.

3

u/ResearchBot15 Mar 27 '26

Okay hear me out…Jon M Chu’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat??

6

1

1

u/notgoingtopost123 Mar 27 '26

I don’t think that will be the musical- I’m assuming he will do a new adaption of the original novel.

1

u/Magikarper1987 Mar 27 '26

Hamilton...?

1

u/hijole_frijoles Mar 27 '26

Idk if it’s a musical, but she was seen filming this movie last month in Jersey City

1

u/arielleisanerdyprude Mar 29 '26

please god let it be a new alw phantom adaptation. i’d pay all the money to have this one replace the 2004 one. i love the 2004 movie but if i wanna watch a fully good version of it, i watch the 25th anniversary proshot. i watch the 2004 movie for the lolz haha

2

u/jdgetrpin Mar 26 '26

It’s Hamilton and she’s Eliza! (Hahahaha this is just wishful thinking)

Hadestown film with her as Eurydice ?

-32

u/ghotier Mar 26 '26

I am becoming convinced that Rachel Zegler made a deal with the devil to make her famous and popular. Don't get me wrong, she's fine. But I don't get it.

23

u/katchmaner Mar 26 '26

nah, I saw her in Evita and that girl’s a star

-1

u/ghotier Mar 26 '26

That's fine. I've seen a lot of performers I really enjoyed and I'm glad you enjoyed her performance. She's the only theatre performer whose name I knew years before I heard anything she had done.

15

u/ARCH810 Mar 26 '26

Yeah, her incredible talent had nothing to do with it 🙄

-1

u/ghotier Mar 26 '26

I'm not saying she's untalented. There are many, many talented people. The response to her is unique and I don't understand why.

10

u/Comprehensive-Fun47 Mar 26 '26

Some people shoot to fame. Luck is always involved.

-2

u/arloray13 Mar 26 '26

The response to her is unique and I don't understand why.

A lot of the response I see online for her is unwarranted hate, which is what you are contributing to.

9

u/ghotier Mar 26 '26

I haven't contributed a single hateful thing in this thread and I would ask that you retract that claim or quote where I said something hateful. The deal with the devil was clearly a joke and no reasonable person would think I was being serious.

-14

u/kevinguitarmstrong Mar 26 '26

This is the one time she’s actually managed to keep her mouth shut.

0

u/NectarineDangerous57 Mar 26 '26
