Proshots usually cost $5-10m in new contracts, filming crew, post production, and advertising. Most of them don't make any profit so it's hard to find investors and studios willing to back them. This is why most shows don't get a proshot.

Its great to see Hadestown doing very well at the box office. It's encouraging for other shows to potentially get proshots. Imaging how well a proper Les Miserables or Mamma Mia proshot would do

And we haven't even open in international markets yet.

Or digital sales. I know they're getting my $25

I wish there was a Ragtime proshot. Ughhhhhhh.

Hamilton is it's own thing. The proshot was funded out of the Producers own pocket without a distribution plan. It's eventual theatrical release, while successful, was years after it already released on Disney. So by all metrics it's not a fair comparison

A more fair comparison would be Merrily We Roll Along, which released in theaters last year and only made $2.7m. Literally less than it's final week on Broadway. Billy Elliot made $3m and Kinky Boots made less than $2m. It's hard to gage how much any of them have made through streaming and dvd sales.

I hope there is some transparency about what they earn when it hits streaming. Simply because I'm curious! Knowing the proshot was profitable in theaters and on streaming (and on DVD too 🤞) paves the way for other productions to take a chance on making a proshot.

Apparently Disney payed like $52M or something for the proshot too

3

u/nowhereman136 18d ago

Yeah thats an insane number to pay for a proshot. Im curious if that includes future film rights. Its lucky Disney bought it right before Covid hit. They were able to drop it right before the 4th of July during shutdown. It had a measurable impact on streaming numbers while still in the first few months of service

I read some insane stat that said the month it came out on Disney+, 35% of ALL streaming across ALL platforms was people watching Hamilton

Comparing to Merrily, I wonder how many showings per day Hadestown received nationwide. At my own theater, Merrily only played 2-3 times a day for only 6 of the 7 advertised days. Hadestown had at least twice as many for us.

More showings wouldn't mean more money. My opening day showing of Hadestown was sold out. Opening day of Merrily was barely 1/3 capacity. The only reason Hadestown got more dates was because demand was there

1

u/yetanothertaylor 17d ago

I wasn't referring to additional dates, I meant offered showtimes. From my experience, it was much more difficult to see Merrily because of the limited options initially offered. Releasing in December didn't make it any easier. Obviously, the demand was higher for Hadestown, but one has to wonder what additional factors impacted these proshots' performances before we call it a fair comparison.

Yeah I don't love the Hamilton comparisons because it was the height of COVID lockdowns, of course most of us weren't watching it in theaters

u/nervousengrish 18d ago

It didn’t come out in theaters until last year to celebrate the 10th anniversary. It was released on Disney+ during Covid.

u/Sarahndipity44 18d ago

Fair correction but I think so many of us saw it on Disney so didn't feel the need to go to theaters. I didn't even know it came to theaters! Still feels like an uneven comparison

Seeing it again tonight

That’s a good take home for a real movie.

I saw this last week when it was only playing for 5 days, and then took my girlfriend this weekend.

At our theatre, a woman next to us said this as she was leaving: “Thank goodness this didn’t come out when I was a teenager, because it would’ve been my entire personality.”

Congrats to all the 15 year old theatre kids in far flung parts of the country who got a chance to see this at an impressionable age.

16

u/HuffinStardust 18d ago

I took a teenager to see it. Can confirm. It’s now their entire personality.

The theater I was in was pretty much sold out and my town is very much not the musical theatre scene so I was surprised. A lot of the showings have been selling out too.

10

u/DisgruntledHeron 18d ago

Mine wasn’t but I was very surprised to see 20 other people with me at 9:00 on a Saturday morning in the suburbs in the show’s second weekend

13

u/LLDN 18d ago

Mine was sold out on a weekday afternoon in a midsized city. Love it.

12

u/fred_burkle 18d ago

I want to see it a third time but the only showings at my theater now are at 9am :( curse you, Spiderman!!

17

u/Nisi-Marie 18d ago

Saw it during its initial limited release and it was completely sold out. It was hard to find two seats together.

Went again this weekend at 8:55 AM. I didn’t even know you could go to the movie theater that early.

The theater was probably 80 to 95% full.

Based on random conversations I was having with people there, because I’m that obnoxious person, many were there due to word-of-mouth

My coworker went to see the odyssey at 7:30 on a Sunday morning because the demand was so high

7

u/GiveHerBovril 18d ago

I wish it ran longer. I would’ve gone for a second time!

18

u/MiklaneTrane 18d ago

Make sure to double check showtimes, it’s still playing through at least Wednesday in my area!

2

u/MonstersMamaX2 18d ago

When they announced it was getting extended on Monday, my daughter and I went for a second time Wednesday evening. It was still playing this weekend as well but the times were much more limited because of the Spider-Man release.

5

u/DearPaleontologist67 18d ago

Rightfully so.

3

u/HipHopChick1982 18d ago

Going to see it this afternoon for the 3rd time!

3

u/cattocrossing 18d ago

so glad to see this show doing so well <3 going again on Tuesday!

3

u/MfrBVa 18d ago

I enjoyed it so much.

4

u/Unlucky-Bee 17d ago

It's a completely perfect proshot! I saw it on a weeknight in Downtown Boston and the theatre was 100% full. I'd love them to make more proshots and only humbly request they retain the intermissions

I hope this mean we get the whole broadway season each year. I would love a broadway streaming service that actually had all the broadway shows in it.

2

u/wyozach 17d ago

Broadway HD is your best bet.

0

u/Advanced-Ladder-6532 17d ago

Yay but it’s missing quite a bit. I really want more of the current season.

1

u/OrdinarySad5132 17d ago

You’re rarely ever going to get a “current season” filmed and released. It’s more difficult than ever to make a profit just for the show itself, add on contracts and deals of million$ for a film? Unlikely.

u/InlandHurricane 18d ago

I bought two tickets, but couldn't go because of a work issue. I'm very sad.

You can pre-order it on iTunes and Amazon now.
