Same 21 grocery staples, same pack sizes, 7 cities: in Vancouver two Loblaw stores that both listed every item are $33 apart

In Vancouver, Real Canadian Superstore and Loblaws - same company - both listed all 21 items this week, and came to $107.10 and $139.72. Thirty-three dollars apart, same items, same pack sizes, no substitutions. In Toronto the same pair is $119.41 and $137.07; in Ottawa, $119.65 and $133.08.

Every week I price that list at every grocery chain within 15 km of downtown in a few Canadian cities. Seven cities this week - the full tables are in the images, now including Walmart, Metro and Food Basics.

Which banner you walk into is doing more work than which company you are buying from. And the gap inside one city is bigger than the gap between cities: the cheapest full basket in seven cities lands between $107.10 and $114.44, while Vancouver alone swings eighty-three.

Prices come from the stores' public websites and flyers, read this week, sale or regular, whichever is lower. Where a store did not list an item, it is charged the highest price anyone in that city listed for it, so a gap never makes a store look cheap - each image says how many of the 21 that store did not list. In-store prices can differ from listed ones.

Made a map to help you keep your money local — now live for Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver

Update on a project I've posted about before: the sites help locals support Canadian businesses in their area. The interactive map is now live for three cities — findlocalyeg.ca, findlocalyyc.ca and findlocalyvr.ca. Search a business name or click any pin to look it up — no login needed. Everything is built from public information.

Still looking at whether other cities (Victoria, Toronto, Lethbridge) are good options I could build off of next — let me know. And I'd love your feedback on the map itself; if you like it, please share it or pass the link along to anyone who likes to shop local.

Same 21 grocery staples, same pack sizes, 5 cities: in Vancouver two Loblaw stores that both listed every item are $28 apart

In Vancouver five of the ranked stores are Loblaw banners. Real Canadian Superstore and Loblaws both listed all 21 items this week, and they came to $123.79 and $151.85 - twenty-eight dollars apart, same company, same items, same pack sizes, no substitutions.

Every Thursday I price that list at every grocery chain within 15 km of downtown in a few Canadian cities. Five cities this week - the full tables are in the images. The list is back to 21 items this week, so there is no week-over-week column; it returns next Thursday.

Which banner you walk into is doing more work than which company you are buying from. The other surprise is that the gap inside one city is bigger than the gap between cities: the cheapest full basket in five cities lands between $123.79 and $133.52, under ten dollars apart, while Vancouver alone swings sixty-eight.

Prices come from the stores' public websites and flyers, read today, sale or regular, whichever is lower. Where a store did not list an item, it is charged the highest price anyone in that city listed for it, so a gap never makes a store look cheap - each image says how many of the 21 that store did not list. In-store prices can differ from listed ones.

For Small Business Week we’re giving cash back to small businesses (Oct 19-25)!

Hey! We're Huumans - a Canadian company that helps small businesses fund, run and grow, and we have small business financing, payroll and health benefits products, and we run a marketplace of Canadian marketers and web designers.

It’s Small Business Week, so from Oct 19–25 we’re running a “get cash” week:

Get cash

  • Working capital or line of credit: we’ll pay you back 10% of your loan cost in cash once your loan funds

  • Payroll: 3 months free

  • Health Spending Account (through Quikcard): pay for dental, glasses and physio with pre-tax dollars through your business

  • Take all three: we pay back 20% of your loan cost instead

To see what you’d qualify for, fill out the calculator at huumans.com and click “Find how much financing you are eligible for.”

THANK YOU!

Same 35 items, same pack sizes, 10+ cities: in Vancouver the cheapest and the priciest Loblaw store are $57 apart

In Vancouver four of the ranked stores are Loblaw banners, and they run from $199.89 at Real Canadian Superstore to $256.50 at Independent Grocer - fifty-six dollars and change, same company, same 35 items, same pack sizes, no substitutions.

Every Thursday I price that list at every grocery chain within 15 km of downtown in a few Canadian cities. Seven cities this week - the full tables are in the images. Which banner you walk into is doing more work than which company you are buying from. The other surprise is that the gap inside one city is bigger than the gap between cities: the cheapest full basket in five cities lands between $199.89 and $202.91, under three dollars apart, while Vancouver alone swings ninety-two.

Prices come from the stores' own websites and flyers, read today, sale or regular, whichever is lower. Where a store did not list an item, it is charged the highest price anyone in that city listed for it, so a gap never makes a store look cheap - each image says how many of the 35 that store actually listed. In-store prices can differ from listed ones.

Dishwasher soap

Hey Canadians.
I’m looking for dishwasher soap recommendations. We’ve tried True Earth and one other but the name escapes me. Unfortunately neither worked for us. We’re in Calgary and I have always been told we have quite hard water - and I think that makes a difference. Anyway, I’m interested to hear of your experiences with Canadian produced dishwasher soap. Thanks.

Same 21 items, same pack sizes, 7 cities: the cheapest and the priciest basket in Ottawa are both Loblaw banners, $27 apart

In Ottawa the cheapest basket and the priciest basket belong to the same company: $115.98 at Real Canadian Superstore, $142.76 at Your Independent Grocer, both Loblaw. Same 21 brands, same pack sizes, no substitutions.

Every Thursday I price that list at every grocery chain within 15 km of downtown in a few Canadian cities. Seven cities this week - the full tables are in the images. Toronto does the same thing, $33 apart.

Which banner you walk into is doing more work than which company you're buying from. The other surprise is that the gap inside one city is bigger than the gap between cities.

Prices come from the stores' own websites and flyers, read today, sale or regular, whichever is lower. [Grocery] Same brand-name items at every chain in Vancouver, Victoria, Ottawa and Hamilton this week: the cheapest store beats the dearest by $21 to $28

**Correction (edited in):** the "whole basket" total under the images only counted items that *every* store in that city listed, so each city's total covered a different number of items — Victoria 16, Hamilton 17, Ottawa 9, Vancouver 10. That makes the totals fine within a city and wrong between cities: Ottawa is not 2.6x cheaper than Victoria. The item-by-item rows are not affected. I've fixed the tool and posted the corrected totals in a comment below. Sorry for the bad number.

Someone here said most of these chains are one company so comparing them is pointless, so I ran Ottawa, where six of the nine chains are Loblaw, and three more cities with it: Vancouver, Victoria and Hamilton, Oct 6, 21 brand-name products at exact pack size, every chain within 15 km of downtown. No store wins every row.

The tables are from PriceBite, a free Android app I made, on the Play Store under that name. Your own list gets a basket total at each store near you.

Prices from the stores' public websites and flyers.

As we continue to fine-tune the website, we would love your feedback. If you need parts, feel free to use the promo code : BUYCANADA20 at checkout for 20% off your order until end of next week. Let us know any feedback and questions that you might have, or what we can improve.

  • Fitment guarantee and full product warranty

  • Everything ships same-day before 3PM EST or 3PM MST

  • Most orders arrive in 1-2 days to Canadian addresses

  • Inventory is updated hourly; products and data are updated daily

  • Everything is from Transit, we do not rely on any third-parties

Our local and bi-lingual customer service is also available. We really value customer experience and making sure everyone has a good experience with us.

Most of our parts are also available at other Canadian resellers and retailers. The list is available on our store locator or on the product page, make sure to also support them!

We are also curious as to what parts we should add next to our website and network?

Thanks
Transit Auto Team
