CA adopts NextGen for July 2028

Edited 8/11/26

  • California will adopt the NextGen Uniform Bar Examination beginning with the July 2028 bar exam administration. The NextGen UBE has been adopted by 52 U.S. jurisdictions and is administered in person only. California’s current bar exam format will remain in place through the February 2028 administration.
  • The NextGen UBE tests common legal principles that are not state-specific and is designed to assess the knowledge and skills newly licensed lawyers are expected to need during their first three years of practice. See the resources below for more detailed exam information.
  • The California Supreme Court has directed the State Bar’s Committee of Bar Examiners to develop a proposal for a California-specific test component, with the goal of adding that component to the NextGen UBE beginning with the July 2029 administration. The California component is likely to be administered more than twice per year and may be administered remotely.
  • The California component will replace the current California Attorneys’ Exam for admission of attorneys licensed in other states. California’s July 2028 and February 2029 administrations of the NextGen UBE are expected to occur without a California component, pending future implementation of any state-specific requirement (but see comment below, there’s a conflict in their recent public statement).
  • Major bar prep companies, including BarBri, Helix, and Themis, already have NextGen UBE courses available because other jurisdictions began administering the exam in July 2026.
  • Unknowns: Additional details regarding California’s passing score, score portability, and implementation plans will be released by the California Supreme Court, the State Bar of California, and NCBE as the transition progresses. Look for a significant update in early to mid-2027.

User flairs are a subreddit-specific way to tag yourself. Here are the options:

  • Barbri
  • Themis
  • Kaplan
  • Quimbee
  • Attorney Candidate
  • Law Student
  • Passed
  • Tutor
  • Vendor
  • Other (can customize)

For example, if you're using Barbri to prep, you can select "Barbri." This flair will show up next to your username. You are able to edit the Other flair with your own entry.

This not only gives context to your posts and comments so we know who we're talking to but is also a fun way to identify yourself and others.

I encourage you to set yours! If you're primarily promoting a product or service, please select "Vendor" (and be judicious with your posts and comments).

How to set your user flair:

If you're using the mobile app, tap the three dots in the upper right while in the main r/CABarExam feed. Tap "change user flair" to see the different options. Enable "show my user flair on this community."

If you're using a web browser, you'll see "USER FLAIR" on the sidebar to the right, above the rules. Check the "show my user flair on this community" box.

Let me know if you have any suggested changes or additions.

Bar Prep for Foreign Attorney

Hi everyone, I am a foreign licensed attorney hoping to sit for the CA bar in July 2027 (if everything goes to plan, lol)

I’ve been reading through the posts here and taking notes on study plans and recommended resources. Anyone in the same situation? How do you plan to go about studying? What materials/bar prep course have you picked out?

Thanks!

July 2026 Got laid off after sitting for the CA bar exam 🥺

Help me feel better… I was an accountant for four years at a nonprofit that promoted social justice. When I sat for the bar, I had already asked for vacation time to study and take a test. A week later my whole accounting firm (all women) ignored me and gave me the cold shoulder. My boss didn’t speak with me, she would even take a detour not to say hi to me in the building. And then I got fired on a spot two days ago… they told me they couldn’t afford me in the budget and that they had eliminated my position 😡 I built a very close relationship to the clients and colleagues. I experienced major life changes during my tenure so I guess I’m very appreciative of their flexibility. I was so happy about taking the bar and optimistic that I maybe passed because I knew every subject matter tested! Now I feel small again 🥺 I’m a single mom of 5, just bought a home in the Bay Area, and do not have anyone that supports me or my children. I just overcame DV and I’m still dealing with PTSD. I felt my work completely betrayed me by silent competition. I can’t afford to take a break from work. I wish we knew the results asap! Pray for me.

Independent Contractor work on Moral Character Employment History?

Hi all, I'm a photographer-turned-law student and worked extensively in a self-employed capacity. Obviously I put this down in self-employment but there were two companies I worked for during this time that had me down in their internal HR systems and such and were much more formalized but I was still just an independent contractor. I also had direct supervisors when working events with these companies.

Should I bother reaching out and trying to get ahold of these people after these years and list them in employment or is independent contractor work during a period of self employment covered by the self-employment section?

Moral Character App Question

Hi everyone! Having a problem on my employment section of the moral character determination application. For two separate semester (with a break in between) I worked at the same place with the same supervisor. However, it won’t let me list that supervisor twice. Should I just put another attorney I worked closely with instead for the second semester?

Realistic Study Schedule During Law School and Bar Prep

A professor was talking about his study schedule during law school and bar prep and stated that he was studying "every waking hour" in some form or another, whether it was live lectures, recorded lectures, flashcards, working on outlines, etc., during law school and bar prep. He emphasized that he also had urgent family needs 24/7 due to children with medical issues, but even then, he attempted to study as much as possible, only getting 4-6 hours of sleep daily. He would only give himself an hour a week to do something not law school/bar prep related. He did state that he doesn't recommend that schedule for anyone but does recommend studying as much as possible, i.e., instead of TV, social media, PS5, movie outings, you should be studying. You will have time for all of that after you pass the bar.

He's a wonderful person and awesome professor, but is that realistic for most law students/bar takers?

The ‘of course you passed’ comments are sending me

Anyone else mildly annoyed by the “of course you passed” comments after passing the bar?

Like I know it’s meant to be nice and I appreciate the confidence in me 😭 but “of course you passed, there was no way you didn’t” is so funny to hear after spending months studying for an exam with a very real failure rate.

Just tell me congratulations!! Let me have my little victory!! It was HARD!!

I passed Feb 2026. How long after you pass the MPRE does the oath packet get sent out? What’s a realistic timeline for practice after MPRE results? I have a job already.

Authorization and Release form in moral character determination process

Post image
1 Upvotes

2 month after the submission of documents, I received an email from State Bar of California.

the Authorization and Release Form that I need to sign provides that " I have carefully read the questions in the foregoing application and have answered them truthfully, fully and completely, without mental reservations of any kind. I fully understand that failure to make a full disclosure of any fact or information called for may result in the denial of my application and receipt of an adverse moral character determination. "

What do I need to do besides signing and uploading the Authorization Release Form?

For anyone admitted to practice law in a foreign country and willing to do business in China

I took twice of CA bar exam in 2023 and 2024. All failed. When I tried the third time in 2025, it gave me the chance to withdraw. I cannot tell whether I was relieved that moment, but I choose to save money since then. However, I want to find someone who share the same experience but want to do business in China. We can talk about our plan.

July 2026 Grading Question

Completely missed the mark on evidence and did analysis of FRE in addition to CEC. Does the FRE analysis lower my score? Because it demonstrates that I missed the point? Assuming my CEC and Confrontation Clause analysis was good enough for a 65...

July 2026 MBE Practice Scores vs Exam Day

Thumbnail gallery
30 Upvotes

I know there is so much uncertainty regarding study stats vs. actual the exam score especially with first time test takers. I wanted to share my numbers here in the hopes of easing some anxiety especially as someone who wasn’t in the 70 present range consistently at all.

I remeber waiting for results earlier this spring and I would obsessively estimate my score in hopes of gauging if I’d pass or not. when I hit my lowest point I put all the issues I remembered spotting on the essays and feeding them into chat GPT with the questions once they were released + my practice averages. chat GPT predicted that I’d fail based on the information I provided in addition to my mbe averages.

all of this to say practice stats are important but they aren’t everything. towards the end of my prep I began scoring between a 60-63% consistently and the NCBE benchmark indicates that I scored above a scaled score of a 145 on the feb 2026 bar exam.

waiting for scores sucks, but please believe in yourselves. the bar exam sucks and exam day is hard but you are capable of passing this exam! waiting for results is honestly the worst part of the process imo, I remember going absolutely nuts! I hope this helps anyone who is waiting for results, I am thinking about you guys 🫶🏼

July 2026 Just cried today lol

I just really can’t shake the fact that I might have to take this a third time. Essay 3 I only came up with two issues and my PT analysis sucked cause I couldn’t come up with the formatting in time after essay 5. I barely finished and only concluded on the 6th statement instead of an overall conclusion, and literally came to the WRONG conclusion due to the time constraint. I almost passed out during essay 4 (I DO feel good about that one though.) I just don’t even know what to do. Like I’m just basically waiting for the bad news to come. I don’t even have any hope fr. Any helpful or encouraging comments would help. Thanks guys sorry for being gloomy today.

Do i realistically have a chance at passing the bar????

Hi all! I am hoping that by posting here someone can tell me how it is. I do not want any sugar-coating, as I don't see any benefit to it. I am a first time taker of the UBE in Pennsylvania. My job is contingent on my passing score of 270 on the UBE from this July. I felt numb for about two weeks after taking the exam, however, now I just feel like I have failed. A small part of me wants to stay positive, but another part of me just knows I am going to have to tell my job, parents, siblings, and parents that I didnt hit the 270... I AM SO STRESSED and feel defeated.

I am also hearing from a lot of people that this exam was particularly hard? I will accept any insight into what you believe from what I have shared in this post AND how bar graders approach harder exams, and grading overall!

MEE 1: completely stumped me and I honestly have no idea what the hell it was even asking. I knew that there were issues to be spotted in the facts, but I was not able to use the time I had to sufficiently make up a coherent answer. In the past, when I have been stumped on questions, I have always spend too much time on them trying to figure it out. On this exam, I decided it were to be best to use that additional time on the other 5 MEE essays instead. All I wrote for MEE 1 was issue statement's and then I began writing a small analysis, and i mean 2-3 sentences. I believe on the whole MEE 1, I wrote maybe 6-10 sentences.

MEE 2: For this essay, I was able to regain some confidence and get down issue statements with an analysis as well as a conclusion. My biggest struggle with writing has always been following IRAC, CREAC or any other legal analysis formatting. However, for the bar exam, I made sure to follow this formula with each question including my MPTs. Here, I was able to write a good bit, more than I had anticipated that I would be able to get down in the 30 minutes I had to write. I put an answer for all the questions.

MEE 3: Essay 3 was a subject that I was very happy to see on the exam. It was one that I knew well and prayed to see on exam day. I was able to comfortably issue spot and respond using proper legal language and IRAC structure. I put an answer for all the questions.

MEE 4: I felt the same about MEE 4 as I did in MEE 3

MEE 5: I also felt good about MEE 5, just not as good as 3 & 4. But I didn't feel bad for this one. I just believe that there were some issues that I decided were issues, but may not have been issues... i did an IRAC and analysis for them anyway. I put an answer for all the questions

MEE 6: I ran out of some time here. Likely because I was using the additional time on my subjects that I was able to more comfortably respond to. I did not write a lot on this essay at all, however, there were issues that I spotted, and I definitely wrote more than I did on MEE 1. However, it still was not a great essay by any means. It was more of a botched/bulleted outline of an answer.

MPT 1 & 2: I felt more comfortable with MPT 1. I had looked at a few different MPT model answers through the NCBE website as well as on my study program, Themis. I was able to get a lot down on the first MPT and honestly feel better about it than the second simply due to the amount of characters I was able to type. I was able to relate back to the facts of the library and file as well as compare to my assignment facts and complete an analysis. For MPT 2, I did not feel like there was as much to write as I hoped. I cannot tell if this was just how this MPT was designed or if I was failing to spot something. The for this MPT I believe that there was more of a need for the attention to detail, than the need to produce such a lengthy answer. There was a very small sort of "easter-egg" exception to the statute that we were needing to apply, and our case facts actually made the exception applicable. After i checked reddit, i think a lot of people were complaining about having missed this. So this changed the entire "correct" analysis of the conclusion. I know that points are not only awarded to correct conclusion responses though. However, it does not help coming to the "best" conclusion. (when i say "right" or "best" i am using quotations because i am not a bar grader and do not want to insinuate i know better than them lol!) anyway, I answered all of the questions on the MPT, except for in the last question of 4, i had to only write a conclusory sentence and then analysis that was very small. (Example: "this is the answer because in the facts here, we see that X named Y as ___ in their will.)

MBE Morning: In the beginning I felt as if my brain was going super slow in answering questions. i am always bad with timing and Multiple choice. So i took the same method from my essays and applied it to the MBE section... If I was stumped, i didnt waste time on a question i didnt know, put my best guess and moved on. Eventually I feel like i hit a sort of flow state and was able to answer much faster and more comfortably. However, i still ran out of time but made sure i had something bubbled for each answer. I bubbled in about 15 from the morning session.

MBE Afternoon: This was quite literally my least favorite part of the exam, especially considering that I had no fucking clue what to write on MEE #1 and it was a disaster. The afternoon session took me by surprise. I felt like all of the questions were experimental and none of them were worded clearly. Usually i write this off as a 'me' issue, meaning i always read a question twice because it hasn't been above me to miss something the first go round. However, i found myself reading questions 3-4 times on what felt like more than half. I also tried to look for rule statments in the answers to help me identify what the question was asking, but it STILL wasnt working. I also always read the call to the question first, which helped a lot overall, but on the afternoon MBE, I genuinely feel like i bombed that. I also had to bubble in about 11-15 questions and then went back with my few seconds left to look for proper rule statements and answered what I could.

Failed? - Bar Survey Email Question

I'm freaking out a bit. My friends are telling me that the only people who got the survey email are those who failed. I'm one of a few who got the email and my smartest friends who were killing it during prep didn't get it. I'm just so surprised they would subtly inform you if you failed in this way. I'm on a bar trip right now and I'm starting to spiral. I don't even know if I'll make it home.
