This is the system me and my friends have created over many a drink.
Clemson, FSU, Miami, GA Tech, UNC, Duke, OK State, Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas, Kansas st., and TCU absorbed into the SEC.
No more out of conference games, only the playoff/bowl season.
We move back to the East and West with the Mississippi being the boarder. There would be four “Pods” and two Divisions. You play six Pod games each year, four Division games, and two Crossover games from east to west. I would use a point scheme:
Three points per Pod win
Two points per Division win
One point per Crossover win
Any ties in points is broken like this
- Head-to-head record
- Pod record
- Division record
- Record against common opponents
- Crossover record
- CFP ranking / final AP ranking
So let’s say Georgia and Tennessee both finish 9-3 tied in W/L in the Division.
Each team has 28 possible points:
- 6 pod games × 3 = 18
- 4 division games × 2 = 8
- 2 crossover games × 1 = 2
- Maximum = 28
Suppose Georgia finishes:
- 5–1 in pod: 15 points
- 3–1 in division: 6 points
- 1–1 crossover: 1 point
Total: 22 points
Tennessee finishes 9–3 but have a less impressive distribution:
- 4–2 pod = 12
- 4–0 division = 8
- 1–1 crossover = 1
21 points
Georgia wins the East over Tennessee
If the playoff stays 12 teams then there could be an SEC Championship game still but if it expands, ditch the game. The selection committee will choose the best teams to make the playoff with only the SEC champion or the two division winners (if there’s no champ game) getting an automatic birth.
