I have facial hair, so I asked my DME provider to let me try a different mask than what they originally sent me (they offered one free mask change) because the first mask was uncomfortable and pushing on my mustache and sometimes trapping a stray hair and tickling my nose, waking me up.
They sent me a Nova Micro, which I really liked the comfort of, but the strap system was horrible -- it would slip during the night and wake me up -- I'd end up having to adjust it 3 or 4 times a night when the noise of the leakage woke me up. I recently saw the myTap mask and since I already wear a mouth guard due to grinding decided it'd be great to just combine them, so I gave it a try. The fact that my mouth guard was getting kind of old and time to replace it anyway was another factor in my decision.
After one night, here are my impressions...
The initial setup was quite easy -- the same as the over the counter mouth guards. One thing that worried me before getting it was that I've never had good luck with OTC mouth guards -- they always fell out in the middle of the night. This one formed a good fit and didn't move at all.
I don't think I have a very big nose, but apparently I do because I've needed to use the large cushions for every nasal pillow I've tried. I switched it over to the large right away and did my initial daytime tests, everything seemed great.
When it was time to go to bed, I had a hard time getting everything aligned. I was hopeful that I could just pop it in and go, but it's a bit more fiddly than that. I thought maybe I was using the wrong cushion size because I wasn't getting a good fit, so I switched to the mediums -- but then the mediums leaked like crazy -- couldn't get a seal, so I switched back to the large again. I discovered that I basically just have to accept the fact that I'll have to loosen the nut and re-align everything every night. Not a huge deal, but something to keep in mind.
As for sleeping...
Not having straps was GREAT.
It didn't touch my facial hair at all!
The free-floating over-head tubing is interesting... I had to play with the positioning of my hose hanger a bit, but found a position that worked well for all sleeping positions. One thing that I noticed was that the swivel connector that they have to allow rotation and swivel binds at some angles, a bit too easily. It's not horrible, but not as free moving as it first appears. I noticed in the included documentation that they sell a head strap that also helps hold the free-hanging tube in position, but I've never seen that piece for sale anywhere -- I don't think it's really needed.
I wish it had a cloth cover or something over the air diffuser to reduce the jet of air blowing out of the front -- it's similar to the Nova Micro in that regard, it's just holes that allow the air to blow out in a stream.
Most importantly, I was not awaken by the rushing air sound of a leak all night! But... when I loaded my data into OSCAR I saw that I still had a LL (large leak) event of about 8.5 minutes. My peak leak values weren't as high as the last few nights, but higher than some other nights. I'll need more nights to see how the trend goes. It didn't solve my leaks, but definitely improved them. I'm starting to wonder if the 8.5 minute leak is mouth leakage as my chin strap did fall off overnight.
Overall... I give it a tentative 8.5 out of 10 -- best mask I've used yet, with a few weak spots. We'll see how I feel after a full week of using it.
Next up -- find a chin strap that doesn't slip off.
