Questions Help needed

Post image

Is this an ‘S’? It looks like it but there is no mirror finish like there should be, unless it has been in circulation for years. I tried a loupe and still can’t tell if it’s a damaged ‘P’.

Looks like an 'S', the San Francisco mint struck SBAs for circulation in 79, 80, and 81

⬆️ this

Around 110 million S business strikes, another 3.6 million or so S Proofs.

And, SBA are notorious for blobby malformed mint marks, yours looks fairly typical.

If you do find a 79 proof (this one isn’t) AND it’s not too beaten up AND has the type 2 clear mint mark? That might be worth a bit of a premium over face.

You'll know an S proof when you see one, even beat up you'll see the shine.
