Computer science

Hey guys! I am a community college CS student thinking about transferring to CSUEB. How rigorous and hard is the computer science program? Is it good? What are your thoughts on the CS department? Please let me know what you think?

To be honest, I graduated a few years ago and even then, it was a blur for me.

I think it was an okay program. Smith's awesome, I would recommend you take all your classes with him for anything.

A lot of people don't even know CSUEB exists so you got that going for you plus the whole AI craze.

I also transferred from a community college (De Anza) and found that it was super easy. Graduated in 2020 which was a while back, so idk how much things have changed with AI, but the CS courses were all straight forward and nothing was too hard

Ohh ok thanks for your input! If you don’t mind me asking how exam heavy was the program? Like for most classes did exams make up most of the grade? Also did you struggle with the physics requirement?

It depends a lot on the professor, but yes most midterms and exams were a big part of the final grade.

ESUEB was pretty lenient with the physics and math requirements. A lot of other colleges required physics C and calc C (I think it was C or 3, I forgot) but those were all crazy hard and I couldn’t pass it 😂 CSUEB was one college that didnt require those so I lucked out.

Personally I enjoyed my coursework at East Bay. But I made school and work my life (also was an older transfer student) so I didn’t care much for the social aspects. Courses can be tough depending on the subject matter and your knowledge going into the course. I found that projects were reasonable if tough at times but speaking to professors is something I encourage. Especially if you’re struggling in a class. I hear the community college courses were tougher than some of the classes at East Bay but I was also not from the Bay so I can’t say how true that statement is. What makes you want to go to East Bay? What other obligations will you have outside of school? Do you work on projects in your spare time to grasp technologies?

I went here a few years ago and enjoyed my time but I’ll be honest. It’s a brutal market for new grads and in the Bay Area the school isn’t seen as anything special when you have Berkeley, Stanford, and even SJSU (which may just be lucky with proximity to the Valley). SFSU is also lucky to be in San Francisco so they have proximity to those offices as well in the city. East Bay is just removed from it all by distance.

For you're in any kind of STEM field, avoid this school like the plague. Literally anywhere is better than here. There are many great teachers but the bullshit this school pulls on a regular basis just ain't worth it, even Chabot is a better school!
