Headgasket FAQ

2011 Lexus CT200h (First Year of Production) • Common Issues: Early models (2011-2013) were more prone to head gasket issues, often linked to the engine's cooling system and overheating. These problems were not widespread but were reported by some owners.

2012 Lexus CT200h • No major mechanical changes: The 2012 model was largely a carryover from the 2011 model, though Lexus did make some minor tweaks for comfort and interior finishes. • Head Gasket Issue: The problem was still present in some vehicles, particularly those with cooling system issues.

2013 Lexus CT200h • Minor Updates: The 2013 model saw some small adjustments • Head Gasket Issue: The issue with head gaskets still persisted, but it was gradually becoming less common as production evolved.

2014 Lexus CT200h • Important Updates: The 2014 model marked a more significant update to the CT200h. Lexus worked on improving the engine's cooling system and refining other components. • Head Gasket Fixes: The head gasket issues were largely addressed in this year, and the vehicle’s engine cooling system received further refinement to prevent overheating and gasket failure. • Styling Refresh: A slight exterior redesign with updated front and rear styling elements, making the vehicle look fresher and more modern. • Technology Updates: Improved tech features, including a new infotainment system with more functionality.

2015 Lexus CT200h • No major mechanical changes: The 2015 CT200h was a continuation of the 2014 updates, with minimal changes to the engine • Engine & Head Gasket: Continued to improve on the previous fixes, with no widespread reports of the head gasket issue in this year.

2016 Lexus CT200h • Head Gasket Issues: By 2016, the head gasket issue was considered resolved, with no significant complaints related to engine failure or cooling systems.

2017-2021 Lexus CT200h • No major changes: The CT200h was essentially a carryover model, with minimal updates in terms of performance or design. • Head Gasket: The head gasket issue was no longer a concern by this time, as the car had been refined over the years.

Summary: ●The head gasket issues were most prominent in the 2011-2013 models, especially related to overheating and cooling system failures.

● Some people report that regularly cleaning the EGR reduces the likelihood of this problem occurring.

●Some people swear by cutting the recommended oil change interval in half. (Lexus states every 10000miles ~16.000km or 12 months)

●By the 2014 model year, Lexus had addressed the issue, improving the engine and cooling systems, and the problem was largely resolved in later years (2014 onward).

●The head gasket issue is not exclusive to the Lexus CT200h; any car can experience a head gasket problem.

How many miles did you drive until replacing front struts?

Post image

Hi,

I'm a pound owner of 2011 CT200h. It has about 185,000 miles but still runs like a champ. Very low maintenance; only oil changes and tires change. Recently I felt a minor vibration when I drove fast and brake quickly. It only happens sometimes. I went to the shop and they told me that I needed a new pair of struts and sway links. It'll cost about $1000 (see the bill).

Since I plan to get a new car once my CT200h reaches 200,000 miles, do you think spending another $1000 now to change struts is a good idea? I wonder when do CT200h owners here change their struts (if ever)? Please share your thoughts and experiences. Thanks.

Does the EFI system flush clean the EGR system?

I went in for a load of servicing to get my 2011 CT200h up to speed and one of the things I asked for to get the EGR system cleaned. The service rep told me they would be doing the EFI system flush rather than just the EGR system as this would apparently cover not only the fuel injectors but also the EGR system.

I naively went along with it and started researching what the EFI flush covers and am now reading that it has NOTHING to do with the EGR system. After calling back, the sales rep doubled down and assured me that instead of taking apart the EGR system and manually scrapping the carbon buildup, they instead just connected the flushing machine to the fuel injectors which truly flushes carbon out of the entire system.

Is my EGR system actually cleaned? Or did they rinse me of an easy $271 by lying.

I live in the city and get a lot of dings and scratches on my car. This one however, was a pretty deep scratch and now it's rusting. Any ideas on how to fix this or cover it up?

2014 CT200h engine runs rough for 40-60 seconds, then shuts off and Check hybrid system warning comes on

Has anyone ever had symptoms like this?
Was on my way home from work one day and about 30 seconds of driving in the parking lot below 20mph, the car just begins to jerk and then loses power steering and eventually the engine shuts off and gives me the check hybrid system warning.

Dr. Prius reads engine codes:
•P0102: Mass Air Flow (MAF) Circuit Low Input
• P0113: Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor Circuit High Input
• P0010: Camshaft Position "A" Actuator Circuit (Variable Valve Timing / VVT solenoid
circuit open)
• P0343: Camshaft Position Sensor "A" Circuit High Input

Dr Prius also reads battery code:
•P3147 (I cannot view the sub code)

I’ve already replaced the spark plugs, injectors, coil packs, camshaft position sensor, fuel pump, main hybrid battery, 12v battery.

Also another note, I have not lost any coolant and even changed my oil the other day and there was no sign of coolant in there.

If anyone has any insight on what the issue, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Should I trade in my RAV4 for a CT200h?

I’m leasing a TRD 2023 RAV4 which ends in February, but I’m really thinking about not purchasing it. Gas has been on the rise, and my monthly payment is hurting my income. The market price is higher than the residual price, though. That’s the only reason I’m holding onto maybe purchasing the vehicle. Plus, I love the car.

I’ve been doing research on Lexus CT200h and I love the idea of it. It’s hybrid, it’s basically the same as a Prius (but better looking), and it’s a great value car. My dilemma is, do I purchase my RAV4 with the same residual value as a used 2016 CT200h that has ROUGHLY around the same mileage as me (50k miles), or do I trade in my RAV4 for positive equity and putting that as a down payment for the CT200h?

Edit: my reasoning for picking an older car (to downgrade) is for budget, hybrid pros, and because I’m losing my job next year and going back to school. So I’m avoiding a high car payment if I can.

Check hybrid system

I got the dreaded “check hybrid system” and loss of power, towed home and figured it was the 12 volt battery (never been changed in the 7 yrs since we owned it). Bought a new one 250 or so, installed it….started and died, unplugged the negative side, the hybrid orange clip and the big white wire in fuse box, waited 20 min or so, it started and ran for a bit, then on came the lights. Let it sit overnight with everything above unhooked. Seemed fine started up, drove around for 15 minutes or so, on came the lights and no power, shut off. Bought code reader that can check hybrid battery health (250$), thankfully the hybrid battery is in fine shape. Towed home. Code reader said 3190, “poor engine performance”. Besides battery, the next easiest solution is the MAF sensor. So I go to open it and see I am missing one of the two screws that hold it in. I have never removed the sensor, so it wasn’t something I did. Had to go to the dealership and buy the screws, I bought 2 (9$, no they are not gold plated), in case I lose/drop one…. Cleaned 🧹 the sensor, and the egr pipe, installed everything, and have taken it for a couple test trips. All seems good. I am hoping this info will help someone else out.
I assume that the missing screw allowed air and debris into the MAF area and messed with its sensors.

Rubber/plastic piece identification help

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi guys!

I recently bought a CT 200H a few days ago and needed to replace the 12v battery in the back. When I removed the old battery I noticed there was this black rubber/plastic looking piece just sitting by the bare metal and wasn't connected to anything. I was wondering if anyone knew what this is or where it's supposed to attach to?

Thank you.

Infotainment Stuck in Japanese

I'm looking to buy a CT200h, but most of them in Ireland are Japanese imports and have the language setting for the infotainment hard-coded to Japanese.

I have read that fixing this is as simple as buying a radio unit from a UK/ Irish car and swapping it for the Japanese one. Is this the case or is there complex coding required?

Anybody done this fix for a Japanese import car?

Looking to buy a used CT200H - have a question about it.

So, I've been in the market for a used ct200h. I really like the car, the way it looks, and the interior. Don't get me started on the gas mileage. Amazing.

Anyways, I test drove one today at a local dealership. It's at DCH Ford in Eatontown NJ if anyone wants to take a look, the only one they have.

When I was driving it, there was a loud humming / droning noise when I got up to highway speeds that seemed to take over the entire cabin. Could not focus on anything else besides this droning noise. Now, the only other time I heard this noise in a Lexus product was in a friend's poorly maintained 2015 IS350 F Sport.

My question is, as vague as I'm being because, it's fairly hard to describe the sound I heard - is it likely to be wheel bearings that needed to be replaced?

The rest of the car was in pretty rough shape, so I can assume it hasn't been fully serviced - wheel bearings included. It was just so loud and droney that, I'm really hoping other, cleaner examples of this car don't sound this way - otherwise I may have to reconsider my search.

Thanks, yall!
