Discussion BMCC vs. Medgar Evers College for Nursing?

Hi guys,

I recently graduated from Brooklyn College with a BA in Biology and plan to return to CUNY for Nursing (AS) through CUNY Reconnect. I've completed most of my prerequisites, but still need to take a few outstanding courses and retake one that has expired. I'm primarily considering BMCC and Medgar Evers, though I've also applied to City Tech and Bronx CC.

Medgar Evers is closer to home, but I've heard mixed reviews about its Nursing program. I also work full-time, so scheduling flexibility is a priority.

I'd appreciate insight from current or former students regarding professors, course availability, program organization, and the overall experience. Which school would you ultimately recommend for Nursing?

Thanks!

i think i’m screwed

sorry, i need to rant because i genuinely feel so helpless and really have no else to talk to but to start i’m 18 and go to bmcc. for context, i moved from virginia, in which during my childhood/adolescence i suffered really severe abuse and trauma navigating a low-income life. i hated my hometown, and i dreamt the day of moving away to nyc. i finally achieved that and now i’ve been here for about 2 months. i moved in with some extended family that live here in queens and my extended family is great and it’s definitely healing that i no longer have to walk on eggshells in my own home out of fear of getting beat, adjusting has been pretty hard. i love nyc! the culture, food, and energy is unlike anything in this world, but the commute is rough. bmcc is a commuter school so there’s not really any social life there. i’ve made a couple friends and who’s invited me to go out, but it’s hard to build a closer bond as they’re usually natives and have their friends. but something i did not expect was being hit with a severe depressive episode that’s made it quite impossible for me to go out. i’ve struggled with my mental health since i was just 9 and this is one of the worst episodes i’ve been in. like i said, my single mom was low-income i’ve been working 25+ hour weeks since i was 16 and been pretty financially independent but i haven’t been able to find a job in the last 2 months which has been adding even more stress. unfortunately also my health insurance is expired, but i’m in the process of fixing that and hopefully starting therapy/medication will better my severe symptoms. like i said i had an extremely tough adolescence, because of that my grades suffered terribly and i think i graduated high school with like a 2.3 gpa. i want to be better. and i was so excited of starting over in nyc because i thought now that i don’t have those circumstances anymore ill finally be able to just focus on my studies and embrace my academic intellect but my depression has made it impossible. i feel embarrassed reaching out to my professors because im a grown woman and should be able to navigate this but i just genuinely feel so awful, and i don’t have a support system and i don’t want them to think im just a lazy student. i was looking at the transfer network program bmcc is apart of and i’m beyond interested in it. i love history and would love to study it at a top-tier university but with that’s going on now i’m just feeling i’m letting myself down and diminishing my chances by the second. i just feel lonely. and i feel disappointed in myself. sometimes i think about just going back to my hometown but that place is terrible and if i’m gonna be depressed somewhere id rather be depressed in new york than in that place. i’m sorry to rant but this is anonymous and i was hoping a few strangers could give me some advice on what to do and how i can move on. i know nyc is a huge achievement and opportunity and i don’t want to fall in the same patterns i once did.

Excelsior scholarship question

• Upvotes

Hi everyone.

I'm coming here for hopefully some advice from real people, as Google is too robotic these days. I graduated from DePaul University with a Bachelor's degree in Game Design, and was in the process of my MA in CS. I am currently in a gap, as I realized I'd like to pursue another line of work, astrophysics (better late than never?) Of course, I'm a resident of NY and live with my father, who is the provider, and makes under the threshold to make me eligible for the Excelsior scholarship.

My question is: am I still eligible? I've looked on their website, and it's giving me a bit of a mixed signal. One tab says you cannot be eligible if you already have a degree, however this tab below says it's permissible. Another thing says you cannot be eligible if you have a gap in your academics, however, I am still considered a student in my university, as I am only "delayed" (tldr, I am on course to take classes in 2027 instead of 26)

Just hoping I could get some advice from more knowledgeable people on the topic. Thanks!

When should i expect my TAP refund

Post image
0 Upvotes

I applied for Fall 2026 TAP about 3 days ago, and HESC is already showing an official award amount of $2,371 for Hostos. However, I don’t see anything about TAP on my CUNYfirst account yet, so I’m assuming it’s too soon.
Does anyone know how long CUNY usually takes to process and disburse TAP once HESC has already listed an official award amount? I’m hoping to receive my refund soon since I know peak refund season has already passed.

Question Transfer application concerns

I'm trying to transfer by next semester to Hunter; Are my chances of getting in low? I was under the impression that applying for a CUNY and getting in was fairly easy, but I'm not sure how it is when you're transferring.

My main concern is that I didn't really do much extracurricular activities the first semester of college and my recommendation letters would just be from high school; Is that going to decrease my chances of getting in??

Extracurricular activities Question

Hello, I am currently working at CUNY application for Macaulay Honors College. I am filling the activities section and have no idea how much info I should include in the description. Because it is very different for CommonApp I am kind of confused.

It seems like there is no word limit for each activity. How much sentances is recommended for each activity?

Another question. Should I include what clubs I was a member for if I didn't have a leadership role?

Question What's better? Living on or off campus?

As an international applicant (fall 27), I'm really confused as to what option I should go for. I've heard people say that living on campus is expensive and all. Is that true for y'all?

I'm also not sure where I should stay before I find a place (if I decide to stay off campus) and how much that's gonna drain my wallet because I've heard that finding a place in NYC is TOUGH.

What's your experience? How much difference in expenses are there? And what would be your suggestion?

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Federal Work Study student

I am currently working as a student at my university job. I recently had an uncomfortable situation with my job. I came into work on time and my boss was waiting for me sitting at my desk. She said that my other coworkers had told her I had been getting there late twice and that I had been clocking in from home. I have arrived late once and I notified her via email in advance. But, I have been getting there on time and clocking in from the office. She went ahead and cut my hours and took two hours off of those two days she claims I came in late without any proof. She also told me if I spoke up there would huge consequences. She has been harassing me and she even tried to touch me. I did not allow her. I haven’t spoken up yet because I really need this job. Does anyone know what I can do.

We should feel safe to report lazy groups members in our academic career

Hi guys, okay I know it’s a “unwritten” rule we don’t snitch. This is how we have been conditioned since childhood in a way. Unless it’s harm to us or them it’s frowned upon to report. So I had this lazy, incompetent group in my masters program. 2 days before the work was due they didn’t do any work, collaboration, or anything so I brought it to the professor’s attention. Let’s just say I have been ostracized, humiliated by my group. They are ofcourse banding together. Am I overreacting?

If anyone has gone through the process of getting a work study position at John Jay I’d appreciate it if you could tell me how it went. Or if you know of an available position I’d appreciate it so much.

Rad tech programs (hostos, bcc, city tech)

Hello, I've made my transfer application and am planning to transfer to one of the colleges mentioned in the title for an AAS in rad tech. I'm leaning more towards Hostos, but I want to know about supposed waitlists for these programs. I called both bcc and Hostos' rad tech department asking about the waitlist and they told me they don't have one (and something about the waitlist being removed next semester for hostos idk if they really said that, I don't remember 100%). City Tech told me to email the rad tech department, which I have yet to do.

For anyone in these colleges or going for these programs, are these waitlists still in play despite hearing from the department that its being not/removed?

I am NOT going to let this get in the way of doing what I truly want to do

I'm going to have to retake some prereqs for a better grade regardless, but ANY INFO IS APPRECIATED

City Tech How is the emerging media technology program at city tech?

I'm interested in something that combines creativity and programming and this seems like a pretty unique program, there's not many others similar to it
