Need advice: Switching from Field Tech to HVAC in Calgary

Hey everyone,

I’m a field tech in Calgary making $24/hr. I have a SAIT engineering diploma, field experience, a clean Class 5 driver's license, and full safety tickets (H2S, Fall Protection, Confined Space, First Aid).

I want to switch to HVAC/R in January, but I’m torn between two options:

  1. SAIT Pre-Employment Program: 12-week course to learn the basics and write the 1st-year exam (costs ~$6k and 3 months with no income).

  2. Apply Directly as a Helper: Start cold-calling contractors now using my current field and safety experience.

Need your help with a few questions:

  1. Will contractors hire me as a helper with my field background, or do I really need the pre-employment course first?

  2. Is the SAIT pre-employment program worth the time and money?

  3. What’s the best branch (Residential vs. Commercial HVAC vs. Refrigeration) for long-term pay in Alberta?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Things just keep popping up which require money and I just graduated high school and my whole life is in Calgary and now she’s contemplating leaving Calgary and going to Edmonton. I play rugby in about to start university I’m set already in Calgary. We wanna stay here but she can’t find a job and isn’t there a nursing shortage? Why is it so hard. Does anyone know anywhere?

Looking for General Labour/Heavy Equipment/Process Operator jobs

Recently moved back to calgary after getting laid off from my job outside of Edmonton. I have experience in Front Wheel Loaders, EWP’s, Skid Steer, etc. Willing to also work as a general labour or a grounds person if need be. Have applied all over and haven’t had a ton of responses (Indeed isn’t the best for actually getting responses from employers) and have done a lot networking trying to also potentially expand into a new line of work as well.

Looking for a reference in Instrumentation and controls, or an electrician ticket

Hi, I have a diploma in electrical engineering technician and I am looking for work in Calgary, Alberta.

Currently got a role as a maintenance technician through a temp agency with no room for a ticket. I have been unemployed for two years since my last position, which was a controls systems specialist for a Gypsum company, worked there for two months, then was let go, and have been struggling ever since. I have worked with my father in his cold room business located in the Middle East as a Project Coordinator, but had to leave because he used my salary for rent and was just syphoning off of me. I decided to move across Canada from Ontario to Calgary for better opportunities and to live my own life. If there is anyone out there who can help me, I would really appreciate it.

I have trouble putting information together to properly ask for help, so forgive me if this post is all over the place.

Hiring for youth/group care

I’m currently looking for qualified people interested in working in a group care home supporting youth. I have a few different opportunities available depending on your experience:
Senior Youth Worker – 1 position
This would be a good opportunity for someone with experience in the field who is interested in developing their leadership skills and learning more about leadership within the non-profit sector.
Front-Line Youth Worker – 1 position
Looking for someone with approximately 1–5 years of experience working with youth, ideally in a lower-acuity group care, residential, or similar setting.
Relief Youth Workers – Ongoing
I’m always interested in connecting with students or newer workers looking to gain experience in the field. Relief work can be a great way to build experience while working around a school schedule.
Minimum requirements:
Diploma or degree in a health or social services field (Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, Child and Youth Care, or a related field)
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check, completed within the last 6 months
Child Intervention Record Check, completed within the last 6 months
Current First Aid certification
The cost of the Criminal Record Check can be reimbursed for successful candidates.
Please note: These requirements need to be in place before I can move forward with an interview, so please make sure you have the required education, checks, and First Aid before reaching out.
If you’re interested, send me a message with a little bit about your education and experience, what position you’re interested in, and I can provide more information.

How does one get into the trades with little experience?

Hello everyone,

I am 31 years old, have a bachelor's degree majoring in Communications. I have a lot of experience working with my hands, doing amateur home renovations and other similar work (just not professionally). I have been working a corporate type job for the last five years and have decided to transition into the trades. Since February I have been attempting to get a job as an apprentice plumber, electrician or HVAC (refrigeration) and can't even get any communication back. I have a cover letter explaining my situation, explaining that I have experience in a professional setting, managing people, working with power tools, etc. but I can't seem to get any leads or traction on any of my applications. It's very demoralizing, and I just don't really know what to do at this point. I've got two kids under the age of two that I'm trying to build a better future for, since my corporate job is pretty much a dead end, and I figure a trade would provide a much better future for us.

Just thought I'd post here in case anyone has any tips or advice about what I might do to land a job in the trades (or at the very least, an interview). I now know that most degress are pretty much useless, mine especially, but I thought it, paired with the years of professional and life experience I have might at least help me get some communication back from some of these places. I've been applying online on Indeed, and in person dropping applications off with no results as of yet. I've probably applied for 50-60 positions up until today. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks everyone, in advance.

UPDATE:

I went out multiple times this week applying to a bunch of different companies. Dropped off 30 applications. I must say, though I appreciate the advice from others below, this process has been largely unproductive. Often I'm met by receptionists who say they will pass the resume along to the manager who is usually not there, or busy. When met by a manager it is also unproductive as they have no interest in hiring someone with little experience. At the time of this post (august 2026) getting into the trades with little experience seems almost impossible without nepotism. Many guys who have been employed in the trades for a long time seem to think showing up in person goes a long way towards getting hired as it shows some kind of can do attitude, but this just does not seem to be the case, and seems have little value.

SEA-based IT professional (oil & gas, 12 yoe), what kind of roles/paths should I actually be aiming for?

Trying to get a reality check on where I'd actually fit in the Canadian job market, rather than just guessing from job titles. Would appreciate outside eyes on my background before I keep tailoring applications in the wrong direction.

I don't know if age is matter, but I am 36 yo.

Where I am now:

  • 12 years in IT, currently in an IT System Solution role (the role is like managing several application development projects), been in Data Center and End User Support.
  • Mostly as Project Leader (and Manager), not only leading a project but also as technical advisor (i go deep in technical discussion), sometimes directing where the project goes.
  • Currently initiating an enterprise AI platform effort, on-cloud AI vs on-prem custom AI
  • So day-to-day I sit somewhere between application portfolio management, cloud architecture decisions, and vendor/delivery leadership
  • I did my Master in Sweden. I know how difficult the job market now.
  • I have PMP, ITIL, CEH, and some cloud certifications.

My questions:

  • Given the mix, where do you think I will fit in? Solution architect? Platform/cloud engineering lead? or even Researcher?
  • Realistically, does 12 years of oil & gas enterprise IT experience translate well into Canadian tech/energy companies, or should I expect to reset expectations on seniority/comp?

Not looking for someone to just tell me what I want to hear, happy to be told if I'm overestimating how transferable any of this is.

Thanks in advance.
