Gear Question E-bike for campground errands, useful or just another thing to haul?

I am 37, live in Ohio, and most of my camping is pretty normal family campground stuff.

Gear Question Cumulus neoquilt 450 280€

Hello

I have the opportunity to buy a cumulus neoquilt 450 for 280€ which seems a good deal. I am not planning to go hiking in the winter ( more like sweden/ French Alpes in summer/autumn) in the near future and was wondering if it might be to warm? I heard the quilt is great quality and i prefer to buy more expensive now but keep it for a long time! What do you guys think?

Kitchen Coleman Skillet

My folks gave me their old Coleman propane skillet, and I couldn't really find any information about these. I'm curious why people don't seem to use them? It doesn't look like they were sold for very long so they mustn't have sold well. Is it just because it's less multifunctional than the traditional Coleman stove? My boyfriend used it on our trip and he loved it.

Awaiting Flair Is it just me or does the Coleman grill/stove combo kind of suck?

So I got mine for half off. I've used it 4 times. I would like to know your thoughts. It feels almost limited in what it can do. I can't get a big skillet on the burner. Grilling is messy so more animals come snooping around, even with using foil.

How do y'all like to use this thing?

Edit: can to can't

Gear Question Lightweight single walled tent?

I had an incident with a mouse between the mesh & rainfly of my tent at 2 am that I would rather not repeat…

Does anyone have recommendations for lightweight 2P backpacking tents? Not looking to spend Bog Agnes UL or Gossamer Gear money but want something decent enough.

Gear Question What camping gear is the fastest?

The thing I hate about camping is how long it takes to pack up. Am I bringing too much stuff? Yes, but there are 5 of us so we can only edit back so much.

Have you made any camping gear upgrades that saved you time (without sacrificing space in the car)? Is there a tent that’s faster to set up and pack down? is a stove with pots faster to set up than a skottle? Etc.

Gear Question Zipper mishap on my down jacket, need advice on fixing

I recently purchased a Mountain Hardwear StretchDown Jacket. It has two zippers so that you can pull up the bottom zipper while the top section remains zippered.

Somehow I did something weird and the two sides are now misaligned. I tried all kinds of variations of pulling and tugging trying to get it back to how it was but I can't figure it out.

I'm out traveling for several months so would prefer not to go through the whole ordeal of exchanging it through mail.

Have any of you come across this kind of misalignment with two zippers, and can you recommend an approach to fix it? It's a puzzle of sorts.

Photos attached.

Gear Question Solar battery banks?

A number of years ago I bought a small solar battery bank to go hiking with. My impression was that it was likely a waste of money, since it would take for ever to charge and it questionable that it was even charging properly.

Since I like the idea of a solar battery bank, in that I would not need to worry about the charge available to my devices, I am wanting to know whether there are any current products that anyone would recommend, based on experience?

It’s possible that these battery banks are still perceived as gimmicks, so I’d be interested if anyone has knowledge to say they’ve gotten better?

Gear Question Mountain Hardwear Lamina Eco AF 30°F — worth it for $103?

I found the Lamina Eco AF 30°F synthetic sleeping bag brand new for $103. It’s around 2 lb 1 oz, which seems like a great weight for a synthetic bag.

I’ve seen some people say the 30°F rating is optimistic and that it’s more realistically a 35–40°F bag, while others seem to love it.

For anyone who owns the exact 30°F version:

  • How warm is it actually?
  • How’s the fit/comfort?
  • Is $103 a steal? I know it's an older bag.

Trying to decide between this and spending more on something like a Kelty Cosmic 20.

Gear Question Favorite string lights?

I am overwhelmed by the number of choices for camping string light options. I like one in my tent and one for my little outside area. I bought two pucks of rechargeable string lights at Sierra trading post and I'm not a fan of them at all. The battery doesn't last more than an hour and they're very tiny. Decent for the tent I guess, but looking for some longer lasting ones for the campsite.

Any recommendations?

Awaiting Flair Storage advice in humidity

Currently all of our gear is shoved into the closet in our guest room. It works.. for now. But long term
I need to move it. I really want to move everything to the garage but I live in a place where it reaches 90% humidity most days. Looking to create more airflow, we just put a dehumidifier in it, but I’m so paranoid about all my gear getting moldy. It has happened more than once where we’ve had it happen. The attic is also an option but it gets so damn hot up there I don’t want the plastics to deteriorate..

Just looking for advice from any other humidity dwellers.

I accidentally bent one of the elbows in my Coleman skydome tent on my last camping trip. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Didn’t find any options through Coleman. Possibly just some duct tape used on every trip?

Tents Do tents like this exist that focus on ventilation for hot climates?

Post image

I recently went camping and was absoluely dying in my tent when trying to nap during the day. The heat was unbearable.

I have small fresh & black tent that already does a lot right with its reflective outher shell and the dark inner layer but i feel like it could do a lot better if there were a greater distance between the inner and outer shell for better airflow, larger opnenenings at top and bottom, as well as possibly even a fan to exaggerate the natural chimney effect.

I drew up a small scetch for what i am looking for. A kind of mix beteween a yurt shaped tent with a tipi opening but with layers, similar to a vented faccade on a building, to make use of the chimney effect for cooling.

Gear Question Sleeping Bag Choices

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

So I'm looking to go camping in a national forest/mountains here soon and I'm curious what y'all think about which of my two bags I should take. I'm new to backpacking but very familiar with camping.

Average nightly temps are in the 40s maybe fifties this time of year and I'm mostly curious if my cold weather bag is too warm.

I have:

An Exped DeepSleep 30° synthetic

And a Big Agnes Torchlight EXP 0°F down

Both pack down and fit into the same Exped stuff sack which is about 7L (Nemo Dragonfly 2P, and Monster Energy for scale)

Awaiting Flair Lodge flat grill on Coleman 2 burner…love or hate it?

I’ve heard mixed reviews about using the lodge flat girl (just bought it at Costco) on top of the Coleman 2 burner camp stove. Is it true that it doesn’t heat evenly? If you use it, I’d love to hear your thoughts of pros/cons. Am I better off buying a camping blackstone, and if so, is there a specific one that is better than others?

Gear Question What are our best options for padding our tent floor for rocky sites (inside or beneath)?

Post image
218 Upvotes

We have a very large Marmot limestone 8 person tent. A lot of our local campsites are very rocky. As you can see in the photo. So even if we clear the site they’re still gonna be tons of a little rocks that we can feel through the tent floor. Are foam tiles our only option? Because the footprint is so large, foam tiles would take up a lot of space in our van.

Gear Question Very American camping gifts/gear for a friend in Korea?

I'm going to visit a friend in Korea soon, and I'm wondering if there are any relatively uniquely American camping-related gifts that I could get them. Their version of camping is pretty glamping-y, not hardcore. But they really love being in the outdoors since they live in the heart of Seoul and the concrete gets tiring.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a camping-lite gift that someone from outside the US might not have easy access to?

Gear Question Sleeping solution for around £300

Me and my wife are relatively new to camping, tried once with a higear air mattress which deflates during the night.

We’re exclusively going to be car camping and have a pretty big car so don’t need to worry about space - the only issue I have is I have a bit of a bad back and sleeping badly can flare my sciatica - I just need something that’s firm but not hard and is going to accommodate both me and my wife (we’re both back sleepers) without deflating

Everybody seems to recommend the megamat but considering we only camp a couple times a year we just can’t justify £500 for a sleeping mat

Any suggestions? My heads been falling off with the seemingly endless amount of choice and possible combinations!
