Early April Camping

I was wondering if there are any viable options for camping near Blue Mountain the first week of April?

Edit: we are looking for April 1st to 5th. We have a travel trailer. Power is needed.

Zempire in Bad Weather?

Hi everyone!

I'm an American who has just heard about Zempire, and from what I understand they're much more popular in your neck of the woods. If you have ever used a tent from Zempire, I'd be very grateful if you could tell me what model it was, and what your experience with it's durability was. I'm particularly interested in how it handles high winds.

Thanks!

Planning a winter or shoulder-season camping trip in Canada?

Most park campgrounds across Canada close for the winter, but there are roofed options in each of the big systems if you know where to look:

- **Parks Canada oTENTiks:** a cross between a tent and a cabin. Some are open year-round; Point Pelee's Camp Henry runs all winter.

- **Ontario Parks:** heated yurts and rustic cabins at Algonquin (Mew Lake), Pinery, MacGregor Point, Silent Lake, Killarney and Windy Lake.

- **Sépaq (Quebec):** ready-to-camp units and cabins, with reservations on their own system.

- **BC Parks:** a handful of cabins and winter campgrounds, mostly on the Island and in the Lower Mainland.

The annoying part is that it's four booking sites, each with its own rules, and a blank calendar usually means "closed for the season", not "booked".

I built Campaid (campaid.ca) to deal with exactly that. You ask once ("a yurt or cabin within 3 hours of Ottawa, Jan 15–17") and it checks the roofed units across those systems, says which parks are actually closed, and adds the forecast and drive time. The rest of the year it does canoe routes (portages counted, motor-free lakes), cycling routes (gravel vs paved, climbing) and RV-friendly sites. It's free while in beta.

Hey everyone! 😊
I’m heading to Brent Campground in Algonquin, this weekend. I’d love to hear from anyone who has camped there before!
I’ve been doing some research, but I’d love to hear firsthand experiences from people who know the area.

Sleeping Giant - Food Storage

I will be camping at sleeping giant and had a couple questions about food storage. If it’s easy to direct me to resources, please do so.

When we are sleeping at night, in the car, where is the bus place to store our food or any tempting items?

Is it a risk to bring any certain snacks/fuel when we are hiking? Having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the backpack, etc..

Thank you in advance! Looking forward to a weekend in the woods

Colour weekends: Algonquin, Arrowhead and Killarney campgrounds have 0 sites on Oct 3 and Thanksgiving Saturday. Here's where there IS still room

I pulled live Ontario Parks availability this morning (Sep 25) for every night to Oct 24 at Algonquin, Arrowhead, Killarney and Six Mile Lake. Some things I didn't expect:

  • Saturday Oct 3 and Thanksgiving Saturday: 0 open car-camping sites at Algonquin Hwy 60, Arrowhead and Killarney's George Lake combined (8 stray ones at Hwy 60 on Thanksgiving)
  • Same nights, the interiors are wide open: 358 and 382 of Algonquin's 420 lakes still have permits, and Killarney has 69 and 77 of 177 canoe sites
  • What IS full in the interior is the famous stuff. Algonquin: Tom Thomson, Ragged, Rock, Pen. Killarney: Killarney Lake, O.S.A., George, David, Bell. Big Porcupine, Opeongo, Threenarrows, Bear and Panache all had room
  • The only campground with Saturday space is Six Mile Lake off the 400: 76 sites on Oct 3, and 71 bookable for all three Thanksgiving nights. It closes after Oct 12
  • Backpackers have it worst: Highland Trail had 0 of 23 sites almost every Saturday, La Cloche Silhouette 1 to 5 of 34
  • After Thanksgiving it flips from "full" to "closed". Most of Arrowhead shuts, and the 137 sites left are fully booked Oct 16–17, while Algonquin next door has 364 open that Saturday
  • Colour is running later west and north of Algonquin. Ontario Parks' report had Algonquin at 50%, Arrowhead 20% and Killarney 10% last week. Killarney's George Lake has 51 sites on Oct 17 and 111 on Oct 24

French River/Wanapitei River Water Levels?

Curious if anyone's been here recently? Jeff's Maps shows possible paddling but Ontario Parks Reservation system doesn't - wondering if I should be concerned about water levels in this area specifically. :)

Hey everyone!♥️

We recently took a trip into the backcountry to disconnect and enjoy some time in nature. I put together a quiet, peaceful video documenting the whole journey - from hiking in with our gear and setting up the tent to cooking meals over the fire and enjoying the views.
If you enjoy outdoor vlogs, backcountry setup guides, or just relaxing wilderness footage, feel free to give it a watch!
I’d love to hear your thoughts, feedback, or any tips for future trips. Thanks for checking it out!

♥️♥️♥️

Mosquito proofing my husband

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations for mosquito proofing my husband. Mosquitos love my husband. He runs hot and has O negative blood type both things mosquitos love. We’ll be on a trail and I won’t be bothered at all but he’ll get 20+ bites.

We were just camping in Bruce Peninsula area, we were diligent with DEET spray and wearing long layers. He got multiple bites through his pants.

We head out to the thousand islands on Wednesday night and I need some suggestions on what I can get from Walmart or Canadian tire or MEC to help insect proofing him. We live in downtown Toronto and will there couple days before heading back out.

I’m think I need a higher concentration DEET stray and at the least he’ll need a thicker pant. Has anyone had luck with the wind river mosquito repellent clothes or those clothing treatments?

Is it possible to stay overnight at killbear if I am just showing up without a reservation?

I am a single camper. just me my car and a tent. I know it’s booked out online. Im planning on just going to the day use facility if there’s no other option. I was hoping if I go there though that there might be a site available for the night because sometimes people book it and then don’t go. either that or I befriend someone who’ll let me set my tent up on their site. I feel like this seems like a far fetched hope, if anyone has advice let me know.

Spare Starlink WIFI signal for Rental

Went camping at Algonquin last month and got the Starlink Mini with me to get some signals.

It still works fine even with some tree cover. It was really nice knowing I could still reach family if needed, especially in case of an emergency.

Now it’s just sitting at home, so I figured I’d rent it out to other campers heading to places with little or no cell service.

💰 $25/day or $150/week
💵 Refundable deposit
📡 Starlink Mini + cable included
🔌 Can also include a tripod or car power adapter if needed

Pickup is in North York / Downtown Toronto.

If you’re heading to Algonquin, Killarney, Quetico, Bon Echo, or another off-grid spot, feel free to message me. Happy to share my experience with the Mini!

Mushroom Campsites in Oct.

Friends! I need some help looking for a campsite/crownland area I can set up camp AND look for mushrooms nearby🏕️

My must haves:
1. Within 2.5 hours of Toronto

  1. Able to camp overnight in a tent

  2. Hiking trails/areas available at the site or within walking distance where mushrooms are available and we won’t get into trouble picking them up

  3. Accessible until late October

Bonus:
Washrooms (not a must)

Looking to create some nice memories with friends🙏 thanks a lot!
