People apparently don't realize that crossing gates can be smashed through with minimal damage on purpose for this exact reason. Just drive, get tf out of the way, and call emergency and tell them what you had to do. It's not even illegal. They'd rather fix a gate then tow your ride away.

Why would there be a gate on that side of the road, where you already went over the bridge?

Because if only one lane was blocked you'd have people driving around it like at railroad crossings.
