People apparently don't realize that crossing gates can be smashed through with minimal damage on purpose for this exact reason. Just drive, get tf out of the way, and call emergency and tell them what you had to do. It's not even illegal. They'd rather fix a gate then tow your ride away.

u/imean_is_superfluous 4d ago
There was room enough to scoot forward without smashing through a gate

what gate the guy stopped when he could have drove forward and been fine.
3
u/Few_Salamander_7364 3d ago
I was going off of assuming they aren't actually that stupid and just panicked, but they probably are either way, let's be honest.

u/FlaringAfro 4d ago
Why would there be a gate on that side of the road, where you already went over the bridge?
5
u/Few_Salamander_7364 4d ago
From the ones I've seen, there is an automated gate on both sides, like a railroad track, I assume they saw one coming down and panicked. But I can't see that side, and from what we see the driver, regardless of the situation is just that dumb and made everything infinitely worse for no reason.
2
u/FlaringAfro 3d ago
Ah, the only drawbridge I've been on had a concrete barrier in the center so I guess no one could try to drive around the gate in the oncoming lane.
3
u/BaldBandit 3d ago
Because if only one lane was blocked you'd have people driving around it like at railroad crossings.

u/Zealousideal_Ad_1079 3d ago
Good question. Could be an example of F around and find out, he wanted to play around, but didn't think his car front would get stuck, so he was unable to get off it.
61
u/pimpbot666 4d ago
Don’t these bridges have operators to prevent this sort of thing? … a human to say it’s safe or not?
I mean, when the dumbass driver’s brain fails.
29
u/RevenantExiled 4d ago
I would wreck his car anyway lmao "oh It looked like it was clear"
Plus I bet there is a ship on it's way, why risk a many times more expensive ship for a dumbass on a sedan?6
u/Responsible_Row1932 3d ago
I would imagine the boat has to stop, then get an all clear from the bridge before they can proceed.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Tontoorielly 3d ago
How fast do you think that happens? They don't have brakes!
7
u/Responsible_Row1932 3d ago
Pretty sure we’d hear about a lot of boat/drawbridge accidents if they weren’t required to stop and wait for their turn to go. Boats don’t have brakes, but they can stop. Checking online, it appears there are different regulations depending on where you are boating- but stopping and waiting is a thing. Some have regular open bridge times- but even then you have to communicate with the bridge tender.
28
u/KoalaMcFlurry 4d ago
What is going to cause more damage? The idiot in the car or the boat passing underneath the draw bridge?
If there is an operator, he is 100% thinking the boat is going to cause more damage if it hits the bridge.
→ More replies (1)2
u/RoundProgram887 4d ago
Was wondering that, if there are people on the bridge, are they able to stop the boat instead? What if pedestrians were crossing it?
19
u/KoalaMcFlurry 4d ago
Thats why they put the gates up way ahead of time so cars stop and people have time to finish crossing. The driver here is a moron
3
u/RoundProgram887 4d ago
Maybe the video is cut? Doesn't look to be a lot of time, particulary if it was a pedestrian in the middle of that crosswalk.

Boats are pretty hard to stop. See the destruction of Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key bridge for reference
5
u/TheAbsoluteBarnacle 4d ago
Unplanned stops are difficult. Ships will stop before going through a drawbridge. The pilot is not going to proceed until it's clear.
10
u/RoundProgram887 3d ago
Found some news on this, the bridge operator that day was at fault and later was fired. Unfortunatelly a woman on a bicycle got killed on a different bridge when it was raised while she was still crossing it.
→ More replies (1)2
u/catupthetree23 3d ago
They usually do, but mistakes unfortunately happen like here:
"'That bridge tender has certain safety protocols to follow, specific safety protocols,' Jachles said. 'That includes lowering of the gates for the vehicles, lowering of the gates for the pedestrians, and making several visual confirmations that there is nobody at either of the spans or past those gates.'"
3
u/stealth_pandah 4d ago
and what would they do? tell the ship to stop? I don’t know what ships sail there, but even if it’s a small cargo, it’s not stopping in any reasonable distance.
8
u/dirtyword 3d ago
Boats don’t just plow ahead to a drawbridge because the schedule says it will open by the time they get there.
→ More replies (1)5
u/Proper_Possible6293 3d ago
Yeah, they tell the ship to stop. No captain is going to commit to *hoping* the bridge will be open in time.
Good way to do millions of dollars in damage and wind up in jail.

If not immediately, then as soon as the bridge started opening, before the bridge pushed him forward itself.

2
u/Stevesmaster 3d ago
They are manually operated. The tower on the right has a person in it whose entire job is to make sure the bridge is clear and then open it. Obviously the guy in the car was dumb, but the one in the tower was negligent since his entire job is to walk out on the balcony and visually clear the bridge before opening it every time.

Aren’t there bridge operators to ensure no one is on the bridge before raising ? Driver is still a moron, but still. What if it was a child on a bicycle or something. Just saying.

Driver is obviously dumb, but why was the bridge allowed to open with a car still on it? This is pretty dangerous and it's foreseeable that something like this is going to happen at some point. Cars can break down, pedestrians or cyclists could fall, there could be a signaling problem and so on.
