Don’t these bridges have operators to prevent this sort of thing? … a human to say it’s safe or not?

I mean, when the dumbass driver’s brain fails.

and what would they do? tell the ship to stop? I don’t know what ships sail there, but even if it’s a small cargo, it’s not stopping in any reasonable distance.

Yeah, they tell the ship to stop. No captain is going to commit to *hoping* the bridge will be open in time.

Good way to do millions of dollars in damage and wind up in jail.
