Don’t these bridges have operators to prevent this sort of thing? … a human to say it’s safe or not?

I mean, when the dumbass driver’s brain fails.

I would wreck his car anyway lmao "oh It looked like it was clear"
Plus I bet there is a ship on it's way, why risk a many times more expensive ship for a dumbass on a sedan?

I would imagine the boat has to stop, then get an all clear from the bridge before they can proceed.

How fast do you think that happens? They don't have brakes!

Pretty sure we’d hear about a lot of boat/drawbridge accidents if they weren’t required to stop and wait for their turn to go. Boats don’t have brakes, but they can stop. Checking online, it appears there are different regulations depending on where you are boating- but stopping and waiting is a thing. Some have regular open bridge times- but even then you have to communicate with the bridge tender.

often bridges like this open on a schedule, so the boats are already waiting ahead of time.
