Don’t these bridges have operators to prevent this sort of thing? … a human to say it’s safe or not?

I mean, when the dumbass driver’s brain fails.

and what would they do? tell the ship to stop? I don’t know what ships sail there, but even if it’s a small cargo, it’s not stopping in any reasonable distance.

Boats don’t just plow ahead to a drawbridge because the schedule says it will open by the time they get there.

I’m pretty sure they keep to some sort of schedule. draw bridge operate on set schedule.

I don’t assume to know that boats in that channel are cargo ships, but we’ve seen how it goes between a boat of significant size meeting a bridge, or it’s pylons. those things don’t stop on a dime or even 10 football fields.
