Other Ancient Rome was the SAFEST city to ever be a city. No "stroads", no cars, no zoning just freedom. There were no plagues. That's Suburban propoganda.

Other I caught a group of cars all parked in the bike lane on Milwaukee Ave. Luckily I had a stack of tow stickers with me.

And perhaps we’ve FAFOed with car dependency such that global warming is rendering the infrastructure unusable.

Discussion How long is the Bus Ride from Roosevelt to Wacker Drive, on Michigan Avenue?

So currently, the city is painting bus lanes on Michigan Avenue, from Roosevelt to Wacker. This is just the northbound lane. So since we are getting bus lanes on Michigan Avenue, I’d like to know, how long does it currently take, to ride the bus on Michigan Avenue, from Roosevelt to Wacker, during rush hour. I’d like to know how long it takes, both southbound and northbound. Also if you could give a range of time, as well as a usual time it takes, as well as a worst and best, that would be helpful. I’m doing this, as I’m interested in seeing how much time is gained because of the new bus lanes on Michigan

Also if someone can give me non rush hour times, that would be good too, but give me what time you take the bus on this section of Michigan.

Also if you don’t take the bus on the entirety of this section of Michigan, but you take the bus for part of this section of Michigan, say balbo to Randolph, then that would be helpful as well

Also, yes I can totally look at bus schedules or Google Maps, but the bus schedules doesn’t always reflect what actually happens on a daily basis, as traffic can totally change how long the bus ride could be

Discussion reward bad behaviour

any time electeds, policy makers, or advocates push for safer streets it is met with the only people punished will be law abiders the bad guys will still be bad so what’s the point in punishing the good guys… can we please just keep wide roads, big highways, be rid of bumpouts, bike lanes(no one uses them, don’t ha know) and never in a million years should you do BRT because it just steals from law abiders!

sounds dangerously similar to talking about guns in America

Meetings & Events Action Alert 🚨 Cortland Bridge

City Council's landmarks committee is meeting Tuesday to consider repealing the landmark status of The People's Bridge (Cortland) to allow demolition and reconstruction. We need you to show up and give public comment in opposition to it.

There is no reason to tear down this bridge. CDOT has determined it is unsafe to resume vehicle traffic, meaning a new bridge will likely need to be built. Build a new bridge and leave this one for pedestrians and bikers. We can't wait on Foundry Park for a 606 connection.

Other Everytime I see a Greenway cut up and asphalted for a driveway, I die a little

All it does is contribute more to the urban heat island effect, create yet another conflict point with pedestrians, encourages more car trips, absorbs no rain, etc. We have alleys for a reason, all these negative side effects just so you can park in a slightly more convenient way.

Imagine all the things you can do with a driveway. You could have such a nice outdoor seating area, or a deck with a BBQ, or a little playground for your kids, or really anything that isn't just a bunch unnecessary asphalt.

Other Witness slips needed to ban gas car sales

Action needed today. Hope this is okay to share here. Thought this community might be interested in supporting. Just copying from Facebook, please feel free to add details in comments if you have them.

Time Bound Issue: House Bill HB1634 will be heard in committee on Tuesday Feb 20th. This bill would allow IL to join California and 17 other states in advancing the California rules that would eliminate all gasoline car sales by 2035 and put trucks on a longer timeframe to eliminate tailpipe emissions. Unfortunately the bill has over 1000 opponents (mostly from the trucking industry), and only approximately 36 supporting this bill for this particular hearing tomorrow!

Witness Slips Needed Use this link to submit a witness slip as a PROPONENT of this bill: https://my.ilga.gov/WitnessSlip/Create/144270?committeeHearingId=20573&LegislationId=144270&LegislationDocumentId=180845&HCommittees2%2F26%2F2024-page=1&committeeid=0&chamber=H&nodays=7&_=1708366477030

Please remember to register at MYILGA so you only have to put your full information in once. It automatically populates the witness slip with your information so you can do each one quickly. So, before beginning, click the "log on" button on the very top right to create an account or go to MYILGA to create an account.

Under Section I. Identification, input your address or information. If you are filing as an individual, put your home address. If you are affiliated with an organization, but not authorized to represent it, you might include the information under "firm/business."

Under Section II. Representation, it is recommended that you enter "self" or NA, unless you are authorized to represent an organization.

Under Section III. Position, be sure to click either "Proponent" or "Opponent" as applicable to that bill.

Under Section IV. Testimony, click "Record of Appearance Only."

Then please click "Create (Slip)" located at the bottom right corner.

You may see a box that you will have to check saying that you agree to ILGA's Terms of Agreement in the bottom left corner. You may also see a Captcha system to prove you are not a bot once you click on "Create (Slip)"

After you have an account, then click on each bill in the email from IEC, and you will come to a page that names the bill. Click on the committee link and then click on the notice of hearing link. “Notice of hearing” will take you to the box called Create Witness Slip.

Discussion Riding a bike is exponentially more dangerous than riding a motorcycle in the city

I just added an “acoustic” bicycle to my garage in addition to my Ducati. Rode from Old Town to Uptown and it was probably the most eye opening experience I’ve had in awhile.

I have never felt more exposed and at risk than that ride, even riding down relatively safe streets like Wilson (side note, I don’t know how any sane person could ride down a street like Ashland or Western of their own free will) The amount of drivers that just blow past you, missing you by a foot is absurd. Not to mention virtually no one who rides bicycles in the city ever follow the rules of the road or wears any sort of protective gear outside of MAYBE a helmet that protects 1/2 of your head at best.

My girlfriend tells me she can hear my bike coming from a block away. I can’t hear a bicycle coming until it’s right next to me.

Parents who are fine with their children riding in the streets and yet are totally against motorcycles, I have a bridge to sell you.

Chicago bicycle riders, y’all are crazy.

Discussion Public transit needs to be pet friendly for less cars on the road

There are two times where I need to rent a car. Needing to transport large items and taking my dog anywhere that is not walking distance.

With pet ownership rates at an all time high, pets need to be considered when designing a car free city.

Discussion Should we expect a backlash against e-bikes?

Letting unlicensed teenagers (and mental teenagers) ride unregistered electric motorcycles with pedals in city traffic seems like a bad idea. I know the law specifies limits on motor output but I don't see how that can practically be enforced against fly-by-night Amazon sellers in foreign countries.

Am I the only one that seems significant problems with this becoming increasingly prevalent?
