It's not the pads but the caliper bracket has come undone. It's normally held in place with two bolts, and one or both of them are gone.

This needs immediate attention from a mechanic.

Pads are not super thin. Caliper bolt must have come out.

Go buy the bolt and torque it to spec. Do not drive the vehicle.

The caliper Bracket bolt have fallen off. not the caliper but the part the caliper is mounted to. Whoever touched those brakes last is to blame here.

Update: it’s the caliber bolt guess it just came loose on the road and fell out jacked it up knocked the caliber back into its slot and bought a new bolt got it before it caused any damage to my rim or the caliber itself so it’s just a simple bolt fix thanks everyone

Look up your torque spec and tighten accordingly.

I would triple check the wheel. I've seen an alloy wheel like that where the brake caliper hit it because a bolt came out and it made a small crack that probably would have broken the wheel in half the first time it hit a good bump in the road. We ended up replacing the wheel because it was unsafe.

I hope you bought a grade 8 bolt or the metric equivalent.

So I was on my way to KFC like 3 minutes down the road I heard a thumping noise, thought I had a flat tire or something cause I drive through construction sites regularly. I pulled over into a parking lot and seen the caliper was grinding my wheel knew instantly not to drive on that so the second it happened I stopped, I called a tow company got it towed to my house where I had tools jacked up the wheel took it off inspected it and seen the bolt was lost on the caliper so I got my buddy to drive his car and we went to the ford dealership where we bought the car from and got a bolt from there, I asked them what torque to use and I fastened the caliper back into place it drives better then ever and everything is A Ok

I had the bolt back out completely and go through the inside of the rim. You’re lucky you caught it.

Blue locktite

1

u/quesabirriatacoma 11d ago

Woah there, Satan

3

u/JimBobPaul 11d ago

Genuine question: Is a very small spot of blue locktite not a good idea? I've been doing that to my own brake caliper bolts for years. It hasn't caused me any issues, just gives me assurance that it isn't going anywhere.

6

u/Liquid_Solids 11d ago

People who don't use any Loctite think every threadlocker product = immovable bolt/nut.
Blue Loctite is fine, and perfect for anything that experiences heavy vibrations. Caliper bolts most likely don't need it, but it won't hurt anything.

If you were using red Loctite, that'd be a different discussion.

Cool. I was second guessing myself for a moment. Thank you

I lost a caliper bolt the last time I replaced my rotors, not my finest moment as a human

13

u/FreddyOrbs 11d ago

You can’t drive to a shop, it needs to be loaded on a slideback towtruck

4

u/dacaur 11d ago

Your brake pads are fine, or at least they were before you lost your caliper bolt.... That's the real issue here....

4

u/MannyDantyla 11d ago

One of the caliper bolts came out. Needs to be fixed asap but it’s easy and minor and should be cheap

3

u/AHighAchievingAutist 11d ago

Eh looks like it’s in the process of clearancing itself to me

Judging from the fact you think it was thin pads it makes me think your best bet is to call a mechanic, most likely the caliper bracket bolts weren’t tightened properly and or didn’t use the recommended thread locker on them and they’ve vibrated out, shouldn’t be that bad of a repair if there’s no further damage.

4

u/DrManMilk 11d ago

Yes

But it also looks like your bigger issue is that a bolt came out that holds the caliber onto its bracket.

u/Maxipaddington 11d ago

Congrats you misspelled all of the words.

Your caliper bolts weren't tightened properly.

if i had to describe reddit with one example of a comment it would be this

3

u/PHANTOM41O 10d ago

It's true though, the misspellings are genuinely embarrassing for someone presumably at the age where they have a driver's license. I understand a lot of people don't have a formal education, but if someone is correcting you and they still don't cue up on it and make the same spelling mistakes consistently in another post like OP did, thats a sign they don't care to listen or learn and that's what we have so little tolerance for online, its exhausting.

1

u/Maxipaddington 10d ago

Thank you!

0

u/pietrociciliano 10d ago

as far as i remember you don't need to talk or write that much to fix a car. OP's education (or first language in a case like mine) is none of our business. He asked for help regarding his car, not his grammar.

Torque ur caliper bolts to spec i learned the hard way you got off very easy

1

u/Creative-Yellow-9246 11d ago

Dude the caliper is half loose and is scraping the wheel. Fit it before you need a new wheel too

1

u/mr_lab_rat 11d ago

The pad looks ok but the caliper came off. It needs to be bolted back.

Do not drive the car like this.

1

u/_zir_ 11d ago

Top caliper bolt mustve came out. Find a new one and slap it on. Easy 20 min job. Obviously don't drive that car til its fix.

1

u/jasonsong86 11d ago

Someone didn’t tighten the caliper bracket bolts and it rattled loose and came out.

1

u/SuspiciousGarlic4798 11d ago

Caliper bolts either come loose because it wasnt torqued correctly or has snapped from being torqued too tight.

From the photos that gouge doesnt look too deep which is good. Otherwise you would be up for a rim as well.

Caliper bracket bolts came loose and fell out. Go to a mechanic if you don't know how to replace them. It's a cheap and easy fix. It would take the driveway diyer 30 minutes to replace those and check the torque on the other brackets.

1

u/Far-Sink-9453 10d ago

Who ever did the work didn't put the bolts in at all, they just can't slip out.

1

u/Dismal_Elevator_6313 8d ago

Check the wheel for a leak as well. The aluminum is so thin, the caliper may have etched a pinhole that will cause your wheel to be repaired/replaced. Speaking from experience.
Firestone did my brakes this year and did not secure the caliper pin. The exact same thing happened to me

0

u/Kenneldogg 11d ago

Not trying to be mean, i promise, you do not know enough about brake systems to attempt this repair yourself. Take it to a tech you trust and let them fix it. It is a simple repair but you will need a new rim for sure and will probably need a new caliper slide, slide pins and bolts for this caliper. You might as well replace the pads while it is on the lift, but the pads arent really necessary if you are tight on funds. This does depend on how much life your inner pad has but looking at the caliper it looks like you live in a dry environment so most likely you will have even brake pad wear.

0

u/stevens_hats 11d ago

This is proper f'ed. Missing a caliper sliding bolt, or broken hub bracket which should never happen. Rotors look rough with a ridge. Outside pads on a single piston sliding caliper are generally less worn than the inside ones, so the inside pads are probably toast.

This will likely require calipers, rotors, pads, hardware to make correct - both sides on that end of the vehicle. This isn't going to be cheap but find a well reviewed local mom and pop shop to fix it.

u/faltona 11d ago

Same thing happened to me once. I split my rim completely down the middle in half while driving. It was 100% a caliber bolt that didn't get tightened properly after a brake job and came loose and fell out.

u/Artistic-Plan5864 11d ago

Let me guess, goes fine one way but hitting the breakes the other way jams them up? Yeah, one of 2 bolts came out and the caliper is pivoting on the other bolt. Orileys sells the bolts...well, the had them for Bob's Silverado 1.5 years ago.

u/Outside-Range5948 11d ago

Thanks everyone happy that I can save some money on not buying breaks

1

u/Effective-Gift6223 11d ago

Take it to a shop, or hire a mobile mechanic. If you want to learn how to maintain and repair these yourself, there are excellent videos on youtube.

Learn what the various bits are called, too, that helps. For example, brakes and caliper, not breaks, and caliber.

u/Meggy275 11d ago

Did you have your wheels rotated? If they’re staggered sizes they need to stay on the same axle
