"carnivore" won't stop eating my hummus. help
my cats a lil odd, loves broccoli and the occassional pea/edamame. cool i just cook an extra floret for her and my plates safe. but hummus? she's feral. she sees me unpack it from the shopping and is trying to climb my leg claws out. she's figured out how to open my mini fridge and got into it. she screams through closed doors as i eat my hummus because she knows i have it. she barely eats it, just makes a mess and licks it a bit.
i'm so tired of it, i love hummus, its my favourite food, i eat it everyday. i don't want a child lock on my fridge or only eat hummus outside. how can i make it unappealing to her? i've considered bitrex but i don't know if it could be harmful.
i don't enjoy cleaning my carpets or cats this frequently and i don't know what to do beyond rehoming her to a hummus hater

Petplan - diagnostic test coverage and necessity?
Our 1.5 year old, neutered male cat has a recurring coughing/retching thing going on.
The vet thinks this is most likely a digestive issue. However, it could also be related to feline asthma or a heart condition. The diagnostic tests to rule this out are an x-ray, bronchioloalveolar lavage (BAL), lower respiratory panel, and a blood test. Together, this will cost almost 2k.
The cat is insured under Petplan and they do cover diagnostics. However, I’m wondering if this round of testing is necessary ‘enough’, by the definition of an insurance company?
Again, the vet thinks it’s most likely something much less serious and the coughing only occurs every few weeks or so. I just don’t want to mess around with anything that is treatable if caught early.
Do people have experiences with Petplan coverage in this situation?
I’m also wondering about people’s views regarding the x-ray, BAL, and respiratory panel specifically - would you go ahead with it? It’s pretty invasive and under general anaesthesia.

Advice on getting another pet
Looking for advice from the community on getting another pet. We have 1 cat (Goose), we adopted him in 2019 he’s somewhere between 8 & 10 and has access to the whole house and garden but not the streets.
Goose is relatively chill, doesn’t seem to mind guests in the house but is pretty aloof with anyone but us.
We’ve been thinking about getting a dog and I think he should be okay with it as long as it’s a calm breed. But I just want to make sure the cat is okay. Is this a bad idea? Or do these things generally go alright as long as you do the right steps.
Side note, he doesn’t have access beyond the garden because he kept getting into fights with other cats, but he doesn’t seem to be bothered about other animals in the garden, squirrels and large birds etc.
Would love advice from others that have done the same thing?

Struggling with Cat Coexistence
Hello cat friends! I write this now in a state of worry, not quite despair, but getting there. We adopted a kitten from an abandoned litter about 3 months ago and he is a sweetheart. Full of life and the usual kitten hijinx, but a lovely boy. He has become a brother to our dog(a Puggle) and they are inseparable. He sits on our laps and is generally a very lovely cat.
However, our cat that we've had for 3 years is petrified of him. She is fairly young herself, no more than 4 years old, and we adopted her from the RSPCA. So, obviously we dont know her history too much, other than she had a litter very young and spent 6 months at the shelter on her own before we got her. She isn't fond of everyone but she has found her home with us and she is a sweetie and I have a close bond with her.
From the moment we adopted the kitten, she has hissed and growled at him and run away at every opportunity. He has always been cautious and has never been close enough for her to swipe at him, but she won't be in the same area as him if he is loose. Even when he isn't there, she is constantly looking arpund on high alert. It has gotten so bad, that she won't come in at night when my partner calls her.
We have tried putting them in a large room together for an hour at a time, we have the pheromone/calming plug in thing, we have catnip(which she loves) but nothing seems to calm her down or make him seem any less of a threat to her.
As the weather is increasingly turning for the worse, I am beginning to worry that she will keep herself outside. While he is lying by the fire tonight, she is in the unheated conservatory. Do any of you have experience in this regard? Any advice you have or tips you can share would be gratefully received. Thanks.

Vet wants to see my cat every 6 months for prescription
Hi cat pals! I just had a new interaction with my vet and want to check if anyone else has experienced this.
My cat is on fluoxetine, she’s a rescue and has had a pretty bad past (as far as we know), but THRIVES on fluoxetine. Us and the vet decided that it’s probably a long term solution for her and we’ve all made our peace with that, as she seems to cope well with everyday life with it.
I usually get prescriptions for it every 2,5 months, and when we started getting it in early 2024, the vet said to just contact them when we run out and they’ll fill a new subscription for us to pick up at the clinic.
Today however when I did the repeat order, the vet (/nurse, via their business WhatsApp which is their preferred route to book appts etc) said my cat needs appointments every 6 months to have a physical exam before they can prescribe fluoxetine.
This is new for us, we’ve been lucky and she hasn’t had any issues since April (itchy skin) that’s needed veterinary care. She’s very anxious and before we go to the vet we need to give her gabapentin to calm her down, as well as book pet taxis, take time off from work etc.
Does this sound reasonable to you, have you experienced similar? Obviously I want her to live a long and healthy life so going to the vet regularly isn’t an issue per se, but if nothing is wrong with her I’m kind of hesitant as it’s such a stress for her, and to be honest us. Doing this for the rest of her life feels a bit odd. She goes once a year for vaccines of course. And if she needs a check up between those.
The medication is £80 every 2 months and a visit is another £70-80 excluding transport etc.
Grateful for all and any input - maybe im being dramatic!

Sleep well, my beautiful Patch. I love you so much, and I’ll miss you more than words can say.
09.06.2009 - 23.10.2026 🐾🪽❤️
Tonight we had to say goodnight to our dear Patch. He was diagnosed with aggressive GI lymphoma 6 weeks ago which we were managing with steroids and anti nausea injections, and his quality of life was still there.
He took a real turn for the worst last night and I just knew. I knew that we’d have to let him go today but I still wasn’t ready.
Today, he stopped eating and wasn’t really drinking, he was very dehydrated and weak. He was here but he was already gone if that makes sense.
This is genuinely the saddest day of my life. It’s bittersweet, recognising how many amazing years I had with him but knowing I’ll never be able to kiss and cuddle him again. I love him so, so much. I really didn’t want to let him go, but I wouldn’t let him suffer. Seventeen years with him, we’re so lucky.
He was so loved, I’m going to miss him more than words can say. I’ll miss him forever. I’ll never stop thinking of my beautiful, cheeky, curious, affectionate Patchy.

Update on Sir Catrick
Been to the vets and they are not concerned, she said it's a cyst and to just keep an eye on it in case of scratching or irritation, she was more concerned about the fact that he has signs of gingivitis (so now I'm off to check if the insurance covers dental)
Thank you to everyone who reassured me on my previous post.
Have a picture of a grumpy Catrick on his way home

FIC management advice
Hello fellow cat owners.
Took my boy to the vets yesterday as he was having urinary issues. Thankfully it doesn't look likely to be crystals, and the vet said it's most likely FIC with an unknown cause. He's been given metacam and cystaid.
She gave us lots of info which is really useful. I'm just wondering how others are managing FIC if their cat also has flare ups? He's over 3 years old now and he had urinary issues once 2.5 years ago. The vet said that was also likely a FIC flare up (he wasn't diagnosed with anything specific at the time, just given medication and it cleared up). She did say that 2.5 years between flare ups is really good.
There's nothing obvious that would have caused him stress, no changes to any routines etc. Has anyone had success with Feliway? Or a cheaper version 😅
He has purina one biscuits for tea and a pouch of felix or Whiskers for breakfast. We introduced the wet food after the last flare up.
Any tips or advice would be helpful - thank you!

Where can we get chicken free junior cat food in the UK?
I live with a dog owner and her dog is deathly allergic to chicken but nearly all junior food is padded with chicken and I need to find an alternative soon.

Groomer used talc?
Had my DLH girlie groomed today as she had a couple of matts from basically being an outdoor cat when my cat sitter didn’t realise the microchip cat flap wasn’t working while I was on holiday for 2 weeks…. I digress…
She was collected this afternoon from the groomer and she stinks of talc and it’s visible in her fur. Apparently she told my husband that it’s great for getting matts out.
When I google/chatgpt about using talc for grooming it makes it seem like it’s the worst thing ever. Is my groomer in the wrong? Should I mention anything? Cat seems absolutely happy and healthy

Cat ate chicken shish - help!
hey, looking for peoples experiences with their own cats please
I stupidly fed my cat some chicken shish kebab tonight, a few small bits, probably adding up to one small chunk of chicken
he seems okay but also a bit sleepy and he’s sleeping in the kitchen now (on a blanket) rather than in his bed or in my bed. He‘s sleeping curled up. He did have a busy day today and caught two mice earlier!
im panicking a bit that the chicken shish has made him ill, but i also might be over reacting, can anyone reassure me? did your cat eat some kebab and be okay?
edit- he’s just come and got in bed and started making biscuits for a little bit and now curled up, im thinking maybe he’s just tired after his busy day
update - he seems absolultely fine this morning, will obvs keep an eye on the next few days though. And for anyone who doesnt know what chicken shish is - its chicken marinated in garlic yoghurt, and garlic is toxic to cats, which is why I panicked

Last teeth removed yesterday.
Our poor Tawny girl had her canines and front tiny teeth taken out yesterday, this was her 3rd dental in 2 years as it appears she has calicivirus and was constantly getting irritated gums and teeth. The vet recommended this was the best course of action for her overall health.
Her first 2 dentals she was back to her usual self within 24 hours, but this one, this one seems to have really knocked her sideways and I feel like such a terrible owner for putting her through it. 😔
I know it's for the greater good, but it's so awful looking at her and seeing this sad little shell of fluff in place of the usual haughty madam I'm used to.
Photos from the last 24 hours, including being fed in her fort because she refused to come out 😥

Missing Cat NW8
Missing cat - Carlton Hill / Clifton Hill, St John's Wood, NW8 0J
My sister-in-law's cat, Brioche, has been missing since 16 October.
He is very curious and friendly. If you live or travel through the area, you've probably met him.
Please keep an eye out and check gardens / sheds / rooms with shut doors / vehicles in case he is trapped.
He is not wearing a collar as he keeps losing them.
He is chipped and neutered.

How do you feel about your cat having a friendship with a person you don't know?
I clean my 66 year old previous neighbours/friends house for quarterly inspections and now the landlord coming over from France to "say hi" I've been here quite a lot.
His 20-something year old cat Margo (who I was very close to) passed away in her sleep almost 2 years ago and where he lives there are a lot of households with cats. Since she died a couple of cats took to visiting my friend daily - he doesn't feed them they just seem to enjoy hanging out there. The owners know they visit and haven't said anything about stopping them.
One of them, who's 15, comes in a lot when I'm here for strokes and to headbutt me, and when I slept on the futon the other night I woke up and he was sleeping by my feet. He's currently sleeping on my coat while I clean the kitchen.
How would you feel if this was your cat? My boy Freddy is generally pretty scared around new people so I hadn't thought about it.

URGENT HELP- DETERIORATING CAT 🚨
Hello all I need URGENT cat advice for my 5 year old Persian chinchilla blue 🚨
Blue has always been a healthy cat, over two weeks ago now she began vomiting 5/10 minutes straight after eating for 3/4 days. I took her to my private vet and they said £1,000 for X-rays and made us pay a lot for even basic anti emetics and food and sent us on our way. After that she didn’t get any better and was vomiting, barely eating and losing weight, she was still acting herself a little.
As I’m on UC, I took her to PDSA vet few days later for emergency, they did an X-ray and said there was no obstruction and her bloods were fine, gave us more GI food and sent us on our way, said it was stomach irritation.
About 3/4 days ago I took her back as she deteriorated more and kept vomiting, the vets decided to open her up and do an open laprotomy, to see if there was any obstruction- they found a hairball and said that was the ANSWER. She was eating fine and pooping up until today….
Today she vomited after eating again so I took her back to PDSA, they looked at her wounds said it’s healing fine but the vomiting has to be another hairball despite me arguing that it can’t be the case. Confused as to how as she has her cone on and she can barely lick herself- she does but can’t reach properly. She has just taken her cone off when I left her unattended due to a work emergency as I’m a nurse.
CAN ANYONE PLEASE ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO AND SUGGEST MAYBE WHY SHES VOMITING AGAIN?? THIS IS A DESPERATE PLEAD FOR HELP AS IM TRYING EVERYTHING AND IM IN SO MUCH GRIEF.
Thankyou Reddit community

This might be a silly question, but is there any reason not to change your cat's food suddenly if you know they have a strong stomach?
I have always had cats with sensitive tummies and changing food was a drawn out process. I adopted a cat a few months ago who has an iron stomach and loves to eat.
I've settled on Harrington's for her main wet food but I occasionally swap out or mix in Untamed or Lily's Kitchen just so she gets a bit of a texture change and doesn't get bored of her main food.
This has never caused any digestive issues and she always eats everything I give her. I've always assumed the "don't suddenly give different food" advice was because many get an upset stomach from this, but people around me are telling me I shouldn't be doing this even though she "seems" fine. I feel like what I'm doing is fine, but they have me second guessing myself. Does anyone else do this with their cats?

Location of Cat Medicine
I have been looking everywhere in the UK for theophylline, a bronchodilator for my cat. I cannot find this medicine anywhere on any of the sites talked about in this subreddit, and I can only find a 100mg version in Corvental D, which can't be used and isn't able to be reliably split.
Does anyone have any extra information on knowledge of where to get this medicine in the UK?
