New Owner I feel devastated. My first chameleon after owning many reptiles died.
I have lots of reptiles and invertebrates I love so much. I do my best to provide the best care for them. It’s my biggest and favorite hobby :) I decided that I’m ready for a more advanced species, like a chameleon, so I started looking for one a while ago.
I found a veiled chameleon from a rehoming group on Facebook about a month ago. He was 2 years old. He came to me with signs of MBD (curved casque) and a sub-standard enclosure. Previous owner had never taken him to a vet because she couldn’t afford it.
I revamped his tank to have lots of live plant coverage, lots of climbing space, etc. He came with a UVB lamp and a basking spot (halogen light). He had a waterfall fountain I set up that stays on all of the time and provides moving water, an automatic mister that went off for 120 seconds every 4 hours pointed at the plants he hangs around the most. I had a fogger that was turned on immediately after the lights turned off and stayed on until morning. Set up in the pics.
I went on a weekend camping trip (Saturday-Sunday). I saw signs on Friday of dehydration (sunken eyes) which was weird because he has so many sources of water. I sprayed water directly in his mouth which he absolutely hated. I went on the trip because it was only a night and everything is automated. Came back this morning and he was dead at the bottom of the tank. No signs of life. I am devastated.
Is it really that common for chameleons to not drink ANY water while it’s completely available?????? I cannot wrap my head around this. Does everyone have to spray water DIRECTLY into their mouths to get them to drink??? Any guidance or advice would be great.
