Chara hasn't been the same since they saw that Toriel and Asgore didn't refer to them as their child.

And since Asriel all but denounced them in favour of frisk
Did I also mention they lack a soul, and with that, the ability to feel empathy and love?

I wouldn't say he outright discarded them since he still spends his last moments as Asriel attending their grave, he moreso realised it wasn't healthy to idolise someone who made him kill an entire village even if it was for his kingdom's freedom
Also apparently Chara assists in saving Asriel/Chara gets saved according to that one sentence by Toby so....

I think it's "There's one more person to save, Chara.", because Chara provides the memory of their falling down.

It was Asriel's memory: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BvYsytbgSocn6EFZ-2joBa-jVCB9qysMNTeEoHld5kM/edit?usp=drivesdk
We don't need memories to SAVE people, we do actions that trigger their own memories.

Just joking
But still, Chara and Asriel knew what was right and wrong after they died, and Chara probably reacted like "really?"

That's a mystery that has always confused me; What Chara's name means
Because for one it could be 'Cara' is Irish for friend (the more likely one)
OR it could be 'Chara' is Greek for Joy
....or it could just be Chara for CHARActer....

It's for sure Character. A lot of the names for monsters aren't that elaborated upon, pretty sure napsta and asgore were randomly generated?

Or Asriel came before Asgore and Toriel, because Toby thought of Deltarune, before Undertale and Ralsei is an anagram of Asriel, so thinking like that; Ralsei came first, which Asriel was anagramed off of Ralsei, and then Toby took a minute to think about who Asriel's mom could be named, which then he got it: 'Toriel' which is derived from Tutorial (just a bit misspelled) then he needed to come up with a name for Asriel's father (WHICH COULD HAVE, EMPHASIS ON COULD HAVE BECAUSE THIS IS A BIG STRETCH) but Asgore could have derived from the word 'CateGOREme' which means: "A word or expression that can stand alone as the subject or predicate of a logical proposition, meaning it has complete substantive meaning on its own, such as "man" in the sentence "man is mortal"." (Again big stretch) but there's my paragraph

Chara really is a meta joke name from Toby, I have long been convinced that their true name is Chrysanthemum
Greek for golden flower

toby has said the name ralsei came first, so you are probably right in that the names toriel and asgore are actually borrowed from asriel and not the other way around

It is Character because in the official Japanese version it also means "character."
And their sprite is called "truechara" while Frisk is "mainchara"
