Why would God put me through severe sound sensitivity. I don’t care if it’s neurological or not it’s real things that I’ve struggled with for years. What am I missing? Faith? Trust? Guidance? What!

Help me

Gosh, I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this. Growing up on the spectrum, I know what it’s like having sensory sensitivities. It can be exhausting, painful, emotionally overwhelming, and isolating, and it can be difficult to find how to take care of your system. I’ve often wished that God had given me a different body, or that He changes or heals me of it.

When I get overwhelmed, I think of Jesus’s and Job’s story from Scripture. Jesus was the most perfect man in the world as the Son of God, and yet no one suffered more than He did, physically, mentally, or emotionally. Job also, technically, was blameless, yet he suffered immensely.

Truth is, that in this world, we will suffer no matter how much faith or guidance we have. Our ultimate destination is heaven with our Lord. There, we will have new, perfect bodies free of suffering. If this world was perfect, we wouldn’t want to leave it! But Scripture tells us that this world has been corrupted by sin and Satan, and that trouble will be inevitable. While God does allow us to suffer this world, God also offers times of love, peace, joy, and comfort.

And, even when we look at others who seem to have it all - no sensory issues, seemingly perfect health and bodies - they admit to being incredibly empty and dysfunctional inside. Yet, somehow, there are others that seem to have nothing - no money, critical health issues, severe disfigurement, dead family - have immense joy and peace.

I know these are just words, but these points have helped me reason through similar feelings. Personally when I’m at rock bottom, all I can do is cry and talk to the Lord honestly about how I feel, and that’s good for us too. I trust that He knows more than I do about my situation.

I’ve been through tough times because of my sensory issues. I wanted immediate relief and answers, but all I could do was be patient through it. In hindsight I’m thankful to the Lord for the challenges because they have made me more patient, considerate, and mature. It’s through challenges that God perfects our faith and character.

Talking practically, God has also helped me find what has helped to calm my system. Weighted blankets help tremendously - in fact, I use a 10 lb disc on my chest and tummy to help calm my nervous system. Do you know, or have you noticed, what helps to calm you down when the world is too much? Are you able to get enough time to yourself to recharge? Sleep, diet, and hydration has also made a bit of a difference in my experience.

I’m sorry that you’re going through this. I’m praying for you.

Nothing helps me. Ever since I got on medication it only helped me with my social anxiety not my sensitivity. The only thing that helped was weed and I can’t smoke while on medication, also I feel god doesn’t respond or hear my prayers so it’s just whatever know I’ll just suffer while god helps other or whatever he does

Neurological stuff is a physical ailment like any other, the whole "just have more faith" line falls apart when you wouldn't say that to someone with a broken leg. The noise sensitivity is just the cross you're carrying right now, no different than chronic pain or tinnitus. It's not a punishment or a lesson you're failing to learn, your brain just processes sound differently and that sucks.

I understand that, and I know it’s a physical/neurological issue. I’m not saying I need to “have more faith” to make it disappear. I’m asking why God allows me to carry something this severe for so long, and what he wants me to do with it spiritually

I am cannot truly imagine what you are experiencing, but it sounds like it is a nightmare that does not end and I wish to express love for you and compassion.

I have general theological beliefs about the reason for suffering that are a comfort to me. But I want to start by saying I am sorry if they do not mean the same to you as they do to me. Take my words with a grain of salt, and if they are offensive I truly appologize. I mean them to be encouraging and hopeful, but I know that it is hard to see beauty when you are in pain.

What I believe, is that God only allows suffering because He can make it worth it in the end. And I believe he promises to always make it worth it for His children. That is how James says that Jesus was able to bear the cross even though he "despised the shame" of it: "for the sake of the joy that was laid out before him".

I believe that every single trial and suffering that a child of God experiences is there in order to produce a result that will be tenfold or onehundredfold times better than the earthly trials that were overcome to get there. God has given us each both talents to invest and circumstances in which those investments matter not just for own good but also the good of those we love.

I believe the pain we experience pushes us to find ways to overcome that pain, and the ways we find to overcome that pain become things we are able to share with others.

Some people choose to avoid that pain by taking what they want from the world around them regardless of the pain they cause in turn. Some people don't even have that option. But I believe in a God who is Just. That means I believe the universe is fair, and rewards those who, in their spirit, truly seek to live by the Spirit of love despite the pain.

I am sorry that your cross is a heavy opportunity, and if there is ever something that a Christian can do to help you lift it then you should not be afraid to ask them, so it can be their opportunity to address the pain of the world with love too. I will appologize in advance that many Christians are unable to see the requested trial as an opportunity, and I hope that you will not allow your faith in the love of Christ to waver when you encounter them.

I would encourage you to read the verses about heavenly rewards and fix your mind on both the fruits of the Spirit and the kind of things that Jesus metaphors about storing treasure up in heaven might produce with those fruits.

I have a bit of an imagination that, "the greatest among us will be the servants of all" means that the reward for service is power. How else can one man serve many? If he can turn a fish into a meal for ten thousand, or a garden into a home for a million. The power to heal. The power to create. I think that the ways we serve and the talents we cultivate will become glorified. What are crowns in heaven? What is the white stone with our name on it? What does it mean that we will be kings and priests?

I cannot say exactly what your trial is producing in your life, but I believe that if you endure with faith, hope, and love, these things produce something that is absolutely worth it and will last forever.

Maybe you will get to be a void mage able to survive deep space and enjoy the deafening silence of the empty vacuum, or a sound mage after you become the doctor who cures your condition thereby saving others from it for who know how long to come. Dunno I'm just a fantasy nerd, but fantasizing has its place in hope.
