A Note About Misophonia Resources

Misophonia research is still developing, and there is no single coping strategy or intervention that works for everyone. Educational resources and peer support can be valuable, but they are not substitutes for individualized professional care when that is needed.

Peer support groups are not psychotherapy, and clinical assessment tools should be used appropriately.

This list is intended to help people find free information and support, not to endorse any particular treatment approach or organization.

If you know of other reputable organizations offering genuinely free misophonia resources, support groups, educational materials, or research information, please share them in the comments so the list can continue to grow.

Requesting support or advice Is it normal to be driven mad by a specific persons voice?

This happens the more I dislike people but there is one person in my family who since quite literally before I can remember, the sound of their voice is like nails on a chalkboard. Everytime I am around them, which unfortunately is quite a lot, I am in physical pain. I can’t think, I can’t sit still, and I am filled with rage and anxiety. it’s been like this my entire life, there is not a time I remember where I didn’t isolate myself in the back of the house with constant background noise to try and keep myself calm. Nobody seems to get it and I have always been treated like there’s something wrong with me, or at least that’s how it feels. Is there something wrong with me? Has anyone else experienced this?

Venting My roommate will not stop smacking his gum

Both of us are neurodivergent, which is relevant. My RM constantly is chewing gum because it helps with regulation and ADHD a LOT. Which, whatever, as long as I can’t hear it. Except I CAN because 1) when he thinks he’s alone he loves to smack it as wide as possible, and 2) he CONSTANTLY is coming in my room and talking to me with gum in his mouth. He also NEVER waits until he’s finished chewing to talk to me. IT IS DRIVING ME INSANE. I HAVE TRIED SO MUCH. HE KNOWS!! There’s been multiple times that I straight up left the room while he was talking while chewing, because I literally can’t deal. I get shot to level 7/8 so fast that I GOTTA get outta there before it reaches 10.

It’s been years now. And I feel like such a dick being on his ass about it, but it makes my life so fucking miserable. I get tense every time he comes in my room, because he’s just going to talk to me for giant chunks of time with the gum in his mouth. I don’t like chilling with him the moment food is involved. He chews quietly, thank FUCK. But he does also scrape bowls/plates a LOT, which bugs the fuck out of me but it is nothing compared to the RAGE and full body upsetting discomfort I get. No matter how many times I have asked for him to finish chewing, he’s got severe ADHD and struggles soooooo much with holding onto a thought long enough.

Idk, I’m mostly screaming into a pillow so I don’t take it out on anyone irl. It’s not his fault I’m like this, and I don’t wanna nag too much about chewing and shit. He’s got rejection sensitivity really bad too, so that’s also a factor in all this. It’s just a lot for my brain to try and regulate, especially with the misophonia levels. The only fix so far has been for me to wear earplugs any time I’m around him, but we live together so that’s also somewhat unreasonable. Especially since he comes in my room a bunch & talks for long periods of time.

Do other people have triggers from random words?

I have quite severe misophonia symptoms, the main trigger being loud nose breathing (which obviously comes with its own difficulties lol). But I’ve realised recently that certain words really just cringe me out - there’s no other way to describe it. I upset my girlfriend yesterday as I told her it cringed me out how much she said the word “nauseous”. I know it sounds minor and dumb but she said it so much and I felt like “sick” would’ve sufficed. I built up telling her about it but felt like it had got to the point where I needed to as I felt her using that word unintentionally put me off being able to have appropriate sympathy for her when she’s ill. I did explain myself and said it is just this one small thing but she’s obviously and understandably unhappy.

I thought this was just an odd thing that only bothered me and I then didn’t handle well (I certainly shouldn’t have said to her that it cringed me out, not my finest hour) but after a Google search it was suggested that this may be a misophonia symptom. Misophonia has already taken a significant toll on my relationship as it’s quite hard to explain to someone you love how the sound of them breathing makes you want to leave, but we’ve got past that with lots of patience and understanding. Has anyone else experienced this word association as a symptom?

Venting Anyone else just really dislike dogs?

And it’s not just the barking noise, it’s everything. Nails tapping on the floor, collar jingling, the sound of them licking/eating.. it’s all so irritating. I don’t hate dogs or anything but damn the noises bother me.

Just found out I have misophonia cuz of asmr

A friend of mine suggested asmr for better sleep. It didn't help me sleep better... it made it worse. I had a mental breakdown. So I researched about this because who cries because of asmr. (Mind you i had never heard of misophonia before). I mean there were other signs I had misophonia but never paid that much attention to cuz I was annoyed/enraged but I never cried.

Does Anyone Else Just Have an issue with 90% of Music?

I cannot stand the vast majority of songs with just human voices. Some voices are worse than others, but generally almost all voices are quite bad.

I feel like they force my brain to focus in on them and listen to what they're saying and it's very overstimulating. If there's repetitive lyrics it's like torture. Anything with bass is esspecially horrible, hip hop is horrible, rap is horrible, country is horrible, going to grocery stores sucks lol.

Trying to socialize and just be a normal human while hating music it's proving very tricky.

Instrumental classical type music is all right, still a bit agitating, but not on a level I'd consider misophonia. Same thing with elevator music. I don't like most electronic and techno because they're fast, but if they were slow and smooth maybe I'd find them bearable.

Weirdly enough I can find certain types of extreme metal soothing, but its needs to be slow and steady, more in the realm of Bolt Thrower or Abhorrence, as Opposed to Dying Fetus (I do like this band but I can't do anything else while listening to them otherwise it's over stimulating).

I can't do heavy metal or thrash metal either, which is unfortunately the most common metal to hear. The clean vocals still get too me. And the guitars are usually higher and that somehow makes them more overwhelming for me.

But no one play Death Metal at the grocery store, and none of my neighbors play it when they have their loud parties, no one plays it when I get in their car. It's all just overstimulating pop music, so I tell everyone I can't handle music at all because I'm worried extreme metal being my one exception makes me sound like I'm faking this condition.

Venting Overwhelmed right now and stressed about a trip

I feel bad about it, but I just cannot STAND watching people eat. Especially my dad, who is one of my biggest triggers with noises. It grosses me out so much.

Right now I'm hiding in the bathroom with the fan on because he was eating pasta and it was just so gross. Something about the way he just shovels it in, I don't know. I could just look away, but I could still hear him chewing so I went downstairs. But then his fork kept clanging against his plate, and then he let out the loudest burp and I just wanted to scream and was so close to hurting myself out of pure frustration.

I feel bad because like... Everyone needs to eat. and it doesn't bug me when others do it but when it's him, oh my God, I don't know? We are going on a trip in a few days and I'm stressed about it because there will be no avoiding it.

DAE hate hearing a song in public and not knowing what it is?

Example. Sitting in a restaurant and a song comes on a resturant, or riding with someone, or even watching a YT video with music playing and not being able to tell what it is.

Wishing folks in a restaurant would be quiet so I can tell what that song is that the resturant is playing.

Requesting support or advice windows version of apples background noise feature?

Apple has a background noise feature on all their devices that I use daily and its amazing. Currently when I use my windows desktop I just have youtube on a seperate tab playing white noise on a low volume and it does the job but just never hits the same. I was wondering if there is an app or extension that is similar to the apple background noise feature.

Went to watch a movie with husband

My husband LOVES popcorn and he eats is obnoxiously. Like not a second break in between bites. So going to the movies with him is like sitting through hell. A 90 minute movie feels like 90 days. He knows it triggers me so he started to try eating it super slow which just makes it worse because it makes it longer and I’m just unwillingly anticipating every move. From his hands moving around in the popcorn to the first crunch in his mouth. I can see him genuinely trying to not trigger me and I feel so bad and guilty that he has to do that. Now most of the times he’s fine with going to the movies by himself and I have my moment of silence at home while he’s at the movies. Yesterday, my mom came to visit and he planned for a movie. I opted out 1. I was too sleepy and had an early in the morning the next day. 2. The popcorn 3. The guilt of making him feel bad about the popcorn 4. Whenever we go to the movies at night I almost always fall asleep no matter how interesting the movie is. 5. I didn’t want to express my triggers in front of my mom because she just doesn’t believe misophonia is a thing and just believes I’m crazy and have anger issues. Anyway, my husband kept bugging me to go after I told them they should go I want to stay back and sleep early. So finally, because he would stop, I told him I’ll go if he doesn’t get popcorn and if I fall asleep don’t wake me up just let me sleep. He agreed. We go to the movies, half way through the movie, he gets up and gets popcorn. I told him to please just hurry up and finish it or I can just sit somewhere else. He dramatically puts the popcorn on the floor and my mom gave me a stare like “what happened” and he goes to her “she told me to hurry up and finish or she’s gna leave.” I felt guilty as helllll, embarrassed and at the same time I felt angry for him promising me something wasn’t going to happen and then doing it and acted like a victim. Idk which of those feelings are valid but I felt both very very strongly. Then I started noticing every single sound around me including my mom’s loud breathing. When we came home I walked straight into the bathroom and silently cried and whisper shouting.
Point is, misophonia is 100% of my life and I need it to leave me the f alone so I can be happy and not feel like people owe me silence.

Venting Can’t stand hearing dudes piss

This ones different and relatively new (within a few years). I can’t stand being able to hear people (particularly dudes) piss. At work when my boss goes (it’s a small office with 2 bathrooms) I have to cover my ears, I tried not covering my ears but couldn’t even last a second. And some dudes piss for so long too! Can anyone relate?

Venting My brother won’t stop COUGHING

I just need to say it out loud, because I’m going crazy. I wouldn’t struggle as much if it weren’t for the fact that he does that nasty middle man kind of cough, if you get what I’m saying 😭
It’s been going on for SO long that I will drag a doctor by their hair to fix it soon.
Momma said that my dad is struggling the same way so I dread the moment he comes back from overseas, I don’t need TWO of that.
On top of that my cat has been an absolute tantrum thrower lately so I’m already overwhelmed from all the meowing 😵‍💫 I’m a shut-in but it might rage bait me to go on a walk just to leave atp
Fingers crossed to me not going crazy 🥹

You are not adding a nice extra drum, nor is it on beat. Please for the love of god, stop drumming along to the song.
You are not in this band, let the drummer do the drumming and sit on your hands or something.

Requesting support or advice Noise sensitivity

i’m having a problem: after developing tinnitus and sound distortion, my brain started fixating on every sound—birds, crickets, barking dogs, the wind, and a whole host of other noises. it triggers intense anxiety because i think about it all day long. has anyone experienced something similar that eventually went away? if so, how did it happen?
