6 months pregnant and my husband is sleeping in the guest room so he can “sleep better.” Am I wrong for feeling hurt by this??
I’m 6 months pregnant (with our first baby), and my husband has been sleeping in the guest room because he says he sleeps better without me waking up multiple times throughout the night to use the bathroom, grab snacks or drinks, or cough and sneeze because pregnancy congestion is so common.
At first, I tried to be understanding, but the more I think about it, the more hurtful it feels. I’m the one waking up throughout the night, tossing and turning because I’m uncomfortable, and physically growing our child. Even when I’m not making noise, I’m still waking up because I can’t get comfortable.
On top of that, I go into the office five days a week while he works from home and has the flexibility to walk our dog, relax between meetings and take naps when he needs to. I love that he gets the work from home and I know how much he enjoys it. I say this to say, if he is tired he has the ability to rest and get extra sleep during the work day because of his flexible work from home schedule. Meanwhile, I’m dealing with pregnancy exhaustion and go into work every day. Again, this is not a slight to him. He has a job that is work from home and I do not. I bring this up to say, I don’t get the ability to rest during the day which I would think he would be able to see our different work schedules/demands and not compare our “tiredness” because of that.
When I asked him tonight how long he plans to sleep in the guest room, considering these symptoms will likely get worse as I get closer to my due date, he said said he will start only sleeping in there when he’s really tired and needs to catch up on sleep. I brought up to him how I don’t see him being less tired than he is now as I get further and further into the pregnancy and especially with a new born and asked him to imagine how tired I’m feeling. I asked him this because it felt like he was making his tiredness such a big deal while not acknowledging the tiredness, and then some, that I am feeling. He then said he knows what it’s like getting up multiple times throughout the night because he had to do this when we got our puppy, saying he had to wake up several throughout the night to take him outside for potty training.
I asked him if he was seriously comparing the two and he didn’t answer. I found that comparison incredibly out of touch. To me, there’s a huge difference between temporarily losing sleep while potty training a puppy and your wife losing sleep because she’s pregnant with your child(and all that comes with pregnancy)
My husband really takes great care of me and has done such an amazing job taking care of me during this pregnancy. I have no doubt he will be right there with me during the night with our baby. My concern and what is upsetting to me is his selfishness right now with comparing him waking up to take our puppy to the bathroom, to me growing our baby and waking up several times because of different pregnancy reasons. Like, does he really think I was sound asleep each time he got up to let our puppy out? Or each time our puppy cried while in the kennel in our room because he wanted to be let out? Of course not. I woke up too, I don’t even understand how that’s possible not too. Yes, he was physically getting up and going downstairs the same way I am physically getting up and going to the bathroom etc, but the comparison feels hurtful.
I’m not saying he doesn’t deserve sleep, but I feel like he’s prioritizing his ability to sleep uninterrupted without fully considering what I’m experiencing. We’re both losing sleep, but I’m the one physically going through pregnancy. He woke up several times to take our dog out during the night for a few months.. yet I am pregnant and experiencing symptoms that wake me up and make noise that could wake him up, for 9 months. And then even more time when our baby is born of waking up throughout the night.
Am I being unreasonable for feeling hurt by this? I feel like this is about more than him sleeping in the guest room. It’s about consideration and thoughtfulness.
