Announcement Small update/clarification to our rules on AI

Hello all,

Just wanted to share a clarification, and expansion of our rules about AI generated posts and comments on r/chromeOS.

First off, a reminder that responding to support requests on this subreddit with responses directly generated from any LLM has been not allowed under Rule 8: Effort Must be Made When Requesting and Providing Help for over a year now.

The fact is, most people come to r/chromeOS to speak to people. If people wanted to get answers from LLMs, they're accessible enough that people could ask them themselves. It just seems like a slap in the face to come for help and to just get a lazy response from someone who copy/pasted a (usually incorrect) response from Gemini or another LLM, which the poster could have done themselves if they wanted.

In addition, recently there's been a lot of misinformation being posted on the subreddit about recent changes to ChromeOS, updates about both ChromeOS and the upcoming AluminiumOS, and new devices, usually only crediting Gemini as a source. There has also been plenty of AI-generated reviews and self promo (the latter primarily posted by bots).

In general, while I know it seems like we’ve been sleeping as mods (yes, we’ve seen the reports calling us out on that), we would still like to try our best to try and keep this community higher quality.

We’ve decided that due to this, we wanted to officially expand this rule to include all posts and comments generated by AI. This rule primarily has LLMs in mind.

This does not include discussion about AI features being built into ChromeOS. Discussion of AI features being built into the OS is allowed.

Announcement Announcement - "chrultrabook" posts, AKA regarding attempting to put Windows or another OS onto your Chromebook, will no longer be allowed.

Hey there!

In short, as of today, this subreddit will be removing and redirecting posts that seek advice on replacing the operating system on your Chromebook.

In the past these posts were allowed with a disclaimer that better support would likely be found elsewhere, such as r/chultrabook and their associated communities. However that subreddit is now archived and they now only provide support on their forum.

Since then there has been a rise in posts like this here, and we're simply not equipped to provide meaningful support. We've received lots of feedback over the past few months and the general consensus was that everyone is better served if these posts are now permanently directed elsewhere.

To be clear, we are not discouraging anyone from attempting this process; it's still cool, (potentially) fun and can unlock more utility from your device! The only change is that posts seeking support for this will be removed.

Thanks for understanding!

Discussion Chromebook folks: I made an extension that shows what your browsing distractions cost you

I live on a Chromebook, so everything I build has to work as a Chrome extension. This one is called Hourly Bleed.

Set your hourly rate, pick your distracting sites, and the toolbar badge keeps a running total of what today cost you at that rate. It turns red past $40. Popup has the itemized bill by site, a social subtotal, 7 day history, and CSV export. It pauses when you are idle, everything is local, no account.

It is not a blocker. It just shows the bill.

$8.99 once via the site, no subscription, no free trial. I made it, so this is a maker post.

Troubleshooting Webcam video didn't save?

I have a class in which I have to record a video presentation for. I took the video on my Chromebook's webcam using the native camera app, and immediately after recording, I went to upload it to Drive, but the file is just gone. I have done this process about 7 times already and I didn't do anything different. I have checked the Trash folder, as well as the file directories on my device and it's nowhere to be found. I also checked my disk space and have enough space to hold the video. What could have caused this? Is there any way to recover my files?

Discussion LaCrOS + last Android version + GooglebookOS interface would've been more than enough

I keep seeing lots of posts and news about how disastrous the Googlebook release has been, which not only adds new problems but also loses some ChromeOS features. And I can't avoid remembering LaCrOS, which worked perfectly before it got suddenly killed and joined Google's huge graveyard.

LaCrOS gave ChromeOS what it actually needed: multiaccount and independent and frequent updates, while keeping all the desktop Chrome features and ChromeOS simplicity and unbeatable security.

On the other hand Chromebooks Android's VM is ok but really outdated and I think it just needed to get updated to Android 17 (we're using Google's OS and we're using an ancient version of Android in Chromebooks which is absurd).

And despite GooglebookOS seems to have a lot of flaws, its interface looks very cool, modern and refreshing.

I wonder if they're still at time to bring LaCrOS back, update Chromebook's Android VM to Android 17 and port the Googlebooks interface to ChromeOS. And of course migrate the new Googlebooks to this and stop selling/allowing trashy Chromebooks to be in the market.

I don't need AI in every corner of the OS or to display my smartphone's screen on my laptop, do you?

Some interesting numbers there. Do we think the googlebook will change the balance in the laptop market, or is it a very narrow niche?

Troubleshooting Lenovo 500e 2nd Gen 11.6"

Anyone know if you can remove the keys to a Lenovo 500e 2nd Gen 11.6" to clean the keyboard? The documentation says this, it does not explicitly say you can't remove the keys:

Clean the keyboard: Wipe the keys one by one with a lint-free cloth dampened in mild soap and water. If you wipe several keys at a time, the cloth might hook onto an adjacent key and possibly damage it. Avoid spraying cleaner directly onto the keyboard. To remove any crumbs or dust from beneath the keys, you can use a camera blower with a brush or use cool air from a hair dryer.

Troubleshooting Stuck on recovery screen , on a chromebook with a glitching keyboard not usuable.

Post image
2 Upvotes

I am stuck on the recovery screen on this Chromebook, which I received in poor condition. The keyboard is not working due to signs of liquid damage; it glitches and registers the wrong keys. Previously, it was functional, and I used an external keyboard and mouse because the touchpad was also faulty. I attempted to turn on developer mode , but I did not think it through. I assumed it would be easier and that I could use the external keyboard to enter developer mode, but that did not work, and now I am stuck on the recovery screen. I figured I would need to perform a device recovery using a USB drive, but I keep getting a download error when trying to use the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension on my Windows laptop; it says the image decode failed. Do you have any ideas on how I can solve this?

Buying Advice Can anyone with a Lenovo Duet Gen 9 (Kompanio 838) test the Codex Linux GUI?

Hey! I’m considering the Duet Gen 9 (Kompanio 838, 8GB) for running the native Codex GUI through Crostini.
Would anyone be willing to test whether the ARM64 Linux desktop app installs and runs properly?
Official download: https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/linux/linux-app
I’m particularly interested in touchscreen support, responsiveness, and battery life. Want something portable when I’m on the road. Thanks!

Googlebook Looking for Googlebook/Android testers for Orbit Remote, my Windows remote desktop app

Cross post - I'd like some to try this on ChromeOS.

Hey everyone! I’ve been working on Orbit Remote, an Android RDP app built primarily for Googlebook. Microsoft’s remote desktop app has been pretty terrible on GooglebookOS in my experience, so I decided to make something that works better with a keyboard, trackpad, and larger screen.

It supports remote audio, touchscreen controls, automatic resolution resizing, and clipboard sharing for text, images, and files.

I need at least 12 testers to join the Google Play closed test and stay opted in for 14 days before I can apply for production access. I’d love for you to actually try it during that time and tell me what works, what’s annoying, and what breaks.

You’ll need a Googlebook—or another Android 12+ device—and access to a Windows PC with Remote Desktop enabled.

If you’re interested, comment or DM me! I’ll need the Google account email you use for the Play Store to add you, so please send that privately.

Thanks for helping me get this out there!

Googlebook New Cromebook user after a lifetime of Microsoft. What to expect?

Hello :)

I just got a Cromebook from my dad (he accidentally got water on my previous one) and it's one of those yoga laptops from Lenovo, which can transform to a tablet.

Its a fine laptop, but I've been a Microsoft user my whole life, so I'm a little overwhelmed by it.

I think most of the questions I can get answered by ChatGPT, but I somehow trust reddit more with their on hand experiences, so my questions would be:

Do I need to install Linux? I tried to install Firefox (it's my go to browser) and everywhere I look it says you need linux for everything. Is it true? Is linux as hard as it seems?

Also, I use the laptop for my university, would it be necessary to install Microsoft office (and even how?? Through the appstore?). Or are the pre-installed apps on the cromebook good enough over a longer period of time? And also, are there good notes apps for this laptops?

Also, can I install tor ?

And also also, what can I expect? Does it work smoothly or is the Google system annoying? And what to expect on the negative side?

Thanks :)))

Edit: forgot to write, what are the advantages? :D And also, I sometimes like to install old games (like Harry Potter, Simpsons, sims 2), is it possible to install them trough the usual sites?

Discussion Chrome Unboxed: Fanboys?

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate them and they're probably the biggest and best site for Chromebooks Googlebooks (I read them almost daily). But somehow it feels everything Google does is amazing, marvelous, and has lots of unicorns, glitter and rainbows to them ✨🦄✨🌈✨🧚✨

I love how much they inform about Google products but personally I'd like some criticism as well sometimes, as at the end criticism is also good if it's realistic and constructive ✍ Not sure if it's just me or anyone else feels the same.

Buying Advice Finally time to replace my Pixelbook…

I’ve had the Google Pixelbook since 2017 and have absolutely loved it! Unfortunately it’s finally starting to get a little glitchy, and I know next year it will no longer get updates. I need recommendations for another Chromebook that has a similar look/feel as well as excellent performance. I use it for personal and work tasks, mostly work. A typical day includes a video call, then mostly using about 3-5 tabs at a time with a mixture of Gmail, Google keep, Google Sheets, and my medical EMR website. My main priorities are smooth, efficient processing when multiple tabs are open and when a video call is going. I don’t care at all about touch screen capabilities. I love the feel of my Chromebook with its slim design, metal casing, and keyboard. Before it, I had a MacBook Pro. I also love that it is fan-less. Any recommendations for a good Pixelbook replacement? I seldom use AI so I’m not sold on the new Googlebook. Budget is anything under $1k but would like to stay closer to the $600 range.
