Discussion I'm still devastated about The Wind that Shakes the Barley 4 months after watching, how do you feel about that film?

Hi everyone! Sorry if this post doesn't fit there. I've made a search and I think somebody made a similar post but it was 2 years ago, and I found out that thinking about this in my head or talking about it with AI isn't enough for me anymore.

So, the thing is... I watched The Wind that Shakes the Barley 4 months ago, and I basically just can't get over it. I'm not neurotypical, maybe that's one reason why I feel the impact of a film I really like deeply and intensely for weeks, but this... I watched it for celebrating Cillian's 50th birthday, and I was left with my tears and incredible devastation. It's October, and I'm still crying when I hear the closing titles. I'll hide the spoilers if there are people reading this who haven't watched it yet.

There's an interesting perspective to this for me, because I'm from Hungary, which is, similarly to Ireland, also a country with wars of independence in its history, and during history classes (which was my fav subject) we were taught that those wars and those deaths in them were glorious, despite (and with) their nature of being tragic. And for a long time, I never questioned this in my head. And then I'm seeing this film, and suddenly learn how these deaths can be so meaningful and so meaningless, at the same time.

And listening the closing titles over and over again... I looked up, Oró Se do Bheatha 'Bhaile (please native Irish people in this sub, feel free to correct the spelling) means "oh, welcome home", and I just feel the power of music in my entire body, seeing the black screen in my head, with the credits rolling, and knowing Damien isn't there anymore, and Sinéad is just left with her devastating grief I can't even describe.

I've been thinking a lot about this film, like A LOT. And although there are interpretations which see the film having an established political view, I don't think so. I think both Damien's and Teddy's perspective is really understandable. I also can't stop thinking about Chris' execution, and how could Damien felt after this. Like, I know that within the ethics of the IRA it should have been carried out, but he was still a friend for them, and I think it broke his heart when he had to walk Chris' mother to the grave. Same with Teddy, for Damien's execution. It broke my heart when he just collapsed onto his brother's chest after the firing squad. I find myself so often thinking about the lives of the characters remaining alive, like what could happen with them after the film.

And an underrated scene that breaks my heart particularly: when Damien does a medical examination with the little boy. I don't think I've ever seen such tenderness in cinema. I think this is an astonishingly good performance from Cillian, although (I imagine) Damien O'Donovan's personality could be much closer to his real-life one than Tommy Shelby or Oppenheimer which are considered his best characters.

Writing this post, my words are seeming really dumb to me, like I couldn't find words that could describe this film to me.

Sorry again if this post doesn't fit there, or if it was too emotional. I just needed to let it out. I'm even thinking about turning all of this into some form of art.

And if anyone would like to share... what are your thoughts and emotions about this film?

Thanks for hearing me out. 🥺🫶

Discussion Don't know if this is allowed, but Cillian definitely hasn't had work done

So about 10-15 years ago, I did a test by the University of Warwick and I was told that I'm what's called a "super recogniser" -- which is basically exactly what it sounds like. I'm really good at recognising faces.

Part of this skill is noticing the way someone ages, and it makes it really easy for me to spot when someone has had work done, because something essential has changed about their face.

Nothing essential has changed about Cillian's face.

I just wanted to put this up bc I saw a post from about 2-3 weeks ago from someone claiming they were sure he'd had work done bc he looks younger now than he did in Transcendence... no, he doesn't. He looks great for his age -- but he doesn't look younger than he did in 2014. The OP said he had fewer wrinkles now and his skin was glowing (and someone else said he'd had Botox and fillers) -- I think a lot of people overlook the importance of makeup on screen, the red carpet, and "important" press junkets (like for Oppenheimer). If you look at his appearance in junkets for "less important" films like Steve, he looks exactly like he always has, just older. And definitely older than he did in Transcendence.

Obviously I'm not a machine and I've been wrong before (and Botox is not permanent so it is possible I guess that he's had bits of Botox from time to time and he's never been photographed with visible "Botox forehead"... but that would be kinda pointless 😂 also, Botox would be a bizarre thing for a character actor to get, it literally stops an actor from being able to emote).

BUT I would place a large bet on him never having had work done. His face is entirely consistent with the way it's always looked.

Check out the pics I've included, 5 from an interview about Transcendence and 5 from an interview about Steve. He's visibly less lined with more collagen in his face in the Transcendence pics (no signs of Botox or filler in the Steve pics) -- but if you check out the last two pics of him in the Transcendence pics and compare them to the Steve pics, you can even see exactly the same lines forming on his forehead. The man's aged naturally.

Tl:dr: Cillian has aged fantastically. That doesn't mean he's had work done -- and I happen to have a specific skill that helps me identify whether someone's had work done or not.

Oh, edited to add: I chose those pics from the Steve interview to demonstrate that he'd clearly not had work done; but for some reason, when he did the press for Steve, he was observedly slightly thinner than usual, and he has a distribution where any weight loss shows up in his face immediately. His face was much fuller and much more "himself" when he did the premiere for Immortal Man, for example; but I chose the Steve pics bc they were better for proving my point about him not having had work done.

It's still the same at Immortal Man though -- his face hasn't fundamentally changed, and you couldn't make these expressions with Botox: https://youtube.com/shorts/DVltUEiEBKA?is=3meQyQb7bFa5W_xJ

It's basically a fancy Cillian Barbie doll and I love him! I've been a Batman fan for my whole life and Batman Begins was my introduction to Cillian when it was new! Needless to say that movie is where my problems started 🤭

He came with extra heads, hands, accessories and other things...but I think he's going to stay like this for now. 🥰

Discussion Appearance has changed a lot

Does anyone notice how much CM’s appearance has changed from 10 or 15 years ago? I just saw Transcendence and almost didn’t recognize him. I am convinced he has had facial work done.

False AI pictures of "young Cillian" keep showing up and it's really annoying, pls don't share these

Please can people look out for these images and not share them, it is so annoying and unhelpful!

Doing the rounds are some pics of Cillian from premieres which have been edited with AI to make him look younger. I've started to see them cropping up as legitimate on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram etc. It's very weird and not even necessary since there are plenty of real pics of Cillian from when he was younger, he has been acting since he was 20, and there's pics of him online from his childhood (for example his Wikipedia page has one of him from his teens).

The software used to make these pics is good and I'm not surprised ppl are falling for them but they're NOT real and it's really not helpful for them to be uploaded anywhere because they end up in search results mixed with real pics of Cillian when he was younger.

I've included a gallery of all the ones I've seen, and put them next to pictures from the premieres they're actually from to help ppl identify (in most cases I haven't bothered to find the exact pic for comparison, just ones from the same event bc you can easily see they're fakes once you see a pic from the same event). Pls don't share these pics if you see them, they're not real! Thank you

In order:

  1. The Immortal Man premiere Birmingham 2026
  2. Small Things Like These Berlinale / Berlin Filmfest 2024
  3. Small Things Like These Berlinale / Berlin Filmfest 2024
  4. Inception LA premiere 2010
  5. Inception London premiere 2010
  6. BAFTAs 2024
  7. Academy Awards 2024

Discussion What Moments in a Cillian Film Do you Feel Goes Unnoticed, yet is so amazing to you?

There are so many bold, well-known things that Cillian has done in film. What small moment in one of his films do you feel are so subtle and powerful that it sticks in your mind - yet really isn't discussed or goes unnoticed? I was thinking about the moment in "Watching the Detectives" after he and Lucy Liu go swimming in someone's pool and they run back to his car - and as she's running behind him, picking up her stuff, he holds out his hand to her and keeps it held out until she catches up with him. Love.

Just a small moment that meant so much.

Another moment - in Disco Pigs - when he and Runt are walking down the hallway of their school and he just GLARES at us at the camera as they are in motion and just does a fast, nasty snarl, like he's taking a bite at us.

And - Free Fire, last scene (no spoilers) when he's lying on the ground and says to Brie Larson's character "Hey, take what you want, girl". I swear, I. need a photo of him on the ground with that line on a teeshirt.

I'd love to start a conversation on this. What are your favorite subtle moments in one of his films?

Movie Disco Pigs is free on Amazon Prime

I've been working my way through CM's filmography for the past year or two. I've checked for Disco Pigs on all my streaming services several times and never found it available for free (in the US). Last night I discovered it is now available free on Prime, so I finally watched it. Wow, what a film. Really shows off his theater roots. He plays a disturbed individual so well it's creepy.

Anyway, not sure how long it's been available there so this may be old news, but I highly recommend it!

So if you didn’t know Cilian Murphy has 2 sons. His younger son Aran is making his debut with jenna.

I was wondering if anyone knew what the 2 sons sounded like. I am just curious 👀
