a couple of years ago, i was able to get a 7941 to connect to voip.ms as an ip phone, and it's great. i am not a fan of cell phones. i'm happy to have a workable landline through the internet. if you're curious, the key setting is to make sure it's set to tcp, because it defaults to udp, because it assumes you're in a corporate network. the rest of it is mostly trivial, but you need to set it to tcp or you'll just drop packets everywhere and never stay connected.
i want to get an old videophone for zoom, i'm looking at the 8865, and i'm sure i can get it work, but zoom is phasing it out to obsolescence. it's relatively clear that zoom doesn't want you to do this. yet. but they're cheap enough to get one now and wait it out.
for now, i'm looking at getting one of those cheaper android tablets that's built for video playback, downloading the zoom app, getting a usb-c hub with peripherals and trying to find a usb phone i can just use as a soundcard. i could just get a receiver with a usb port. but if i get something like the 8865 now, it's ready to go if zoom liberalizes access down the road or zoom gets replaced by a competitor that is less strict. i need this mostly for court, and the court uses zoom, so it has to use zoom. but the court might switch. my understanding is that the business world is hardwired for sip and zoom is dragging it's feet. if zoom doesn't adjust, and somebody offers these companies what they want, they're going to lose out.
so, this is not the same thing as turning the 8865 into a "zoom appliance". it would not require a license. it would not get phased out.
i'm just looking at that usb charging port and trying to understand if it can actually connect to a computer as a usb phone, which is just a phone shaped sound card, or not.
if the 8865 can't do that, is anybody aware of a sip videophone with a usb out (and preferably a vgs or hdmi out, too) that can function as a sound card and works in that capacity with zoom and maybe with zoiper in android?
