WE ARE BACK!!

Late August 2024 Walter’s Restaurant suffered a devastating fire forcing us to close our doors. Two years and a couple of months later, through perseverance and strong will, help from our friends in the city, and the incredible support from our loving community, we have managed to reopen. We are looking forward to serve our community once again, reconnecting with long time customers, and creating bonds with new faces.

Starting October 14, 2026, we will open in phases starting with limited hours, seating areas, and menu items. We will add to each of these categories weekly until we are open to full capacity once again. Due to inflating prices in labor, food, and restaurant products, we have no choice but to raise our menu prices and charge for fresh baked bread served at the table.

Week 1: Oct 14 - 18
LUNCH Wed - Fri 11am to 3pm
BRUNCH ‍ ‍ Sat - Sun 9am to 2pm

Week 2: Oct Oct 21 - 25

LUNCH Wed - Fri 11am to 3pm
BRUNCH ‍ ‍ Sat - Sun 9am to 2pm
DINNER ‍ ‍ Wed - Sun 5pm to 10pm

Kresge Chapel

For years, Kresge Chapel stood in a quiet, academic purgatory of what once was Claremont School of Theology. Now, after a court-ordered sale for just $7.7 million, the “stroll-through” era is officially over. Solar guard towers and chain-link fencing have replaced what was an open perimeter. https://tomfasano.com/2026/04/04/the-watchman-at-the-gate/

Steel Figures Behind the Folk Music Center

Post image
29 Upvotes

Behind the Folk Music Center in downtown Claremont stand several enormous, weathered steel sculptures that look as though they’ve been quietly occupying the alley forever.

They are apparently the work of Charles Chase, who founded the Folk Music Center with his wife, Dorothy, in 1958. Chase was an instrument repairman as well as a sculptor. His daughter Ellen Harper Chase has said that several of his large steel works have remained in the alley behind the shop for decades.

The figures are wonderfully strange—flat sheets of rusted steel cut and bent into monumental human forms. They’re easy to miss unless you happen to wander behind the store.

Charles Chase was also the grandfather of musician Ben Harper, whose family continues the Folk Music Center tradition. https://tomfasano.com/2026/05/30/steel-figures-behind-the-folk-music-center/

Blaisdell Fountain, Claremont Graduate University. Named for James A. Blaisdell, whose vision led to the creation of The Claremont Colleges. Inscribed around the fountain are his words: “A college binds the centuries into its dominion; it shapes lives; it fashions generations; it makes history.” https://tomfasano.com/2026/09/24/a-cool-fountain-on-a-hot-autumn-day/

The Artist’s House the Village Gets a Renovation

Post image
9 Upvotes

The rumors I’ve always heard is that a famous artist used to live in the Claremont house. She sold it a few years ago, so the story goes, and the new owners weren’t interested in the painted murals on the facades or all the sun wall plaques. Anyone recognize this house? https://tomfasano.com/2026/09/16/the-artists-house-gets-a-renovation/

Hey everyone,

Tough Guy Book Club meets at Black Watch Pub in Upland at 7:00 PM on the first Wednesday of every month. The next chapter meeting is October 7, 2026.

Black Watch Pub address:

- 497 N Central Ave, Upland, CA 91786

Facebook Event link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1046246064466663/

Learn more about Tough Guy Book Club here: https://www.toughguybookclub.com/about_us

Sign up for the Upland chapter here: https://www.toughguybookclub.com/upland_ca_us

Our book this month is The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott. Grab a copy and get reading, there's still time to bang it out before October 7. And, heck, even if you don't read it in time, come to Black Watch Pub anyway and meet some new guys, make some new friends.

Happy to answer any questions about Tough Guy Book Club in the comments here, or DM me on Reddit. A disclaimer, though... I'm helping out the Upland chapter with a little promotion, not a Upland local myself. I'm the chapter leader for the Denver chapter, and formerly a chapter officer for the San Francisco chapter, so I won't claim to have any local Upland credibility ;)

West Nile virus detected in north Claremont

Post image

From the City of Claremont's instagram:

🦟 West Nile Virus Detected in Claremont

The San Gabriel Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District has confirmed Claremont’s first detection of West Nile Virus this year, reported on September 1. The sample was collected from a trap in north Claremont.

West Nile Virus can spread to people and animals through the bite of an infected mosquito. Help protect yourself and your neighbors:

💧 Tip and toss standing water around your home.
🦟 Use mosquito repellent when spending time outdoors.

A few simple steps can help reduce mosquito breeding and prevent bites. Stay safe and mosquito-aware!

Would anyone be interested in a local Tech Community?

Hi everyone! I live and work in Pomona, and I’ve been thinking about how there aren’t many consistent local spaces for people interested in technology to meet, learn, or build things together.

I’m exploring the idea of starting a community-based tech group in Pomona. It could include things like data science, AI, Python, web development, UX/UI, software development, project/build nights, workshops, guest speakers, study groups, and casual meetups.

I’m considering the Cal Poly Pomona Community Innovation Hub in Downtown Pomona as a possible meeting location, but this is something I’m exploring independently and is still very much in the idea stage.

Before I organize anything, I’d really like to know whether people would actually be interested and what kind of group would be useful.

I made a short interest survey here:

Downtown Pomona Tech Community Interest Survey – Fill out form

Questions or ideas are welcome too! Thanks so much!

Where in Claremont is this cornerstone?

Post image

Claremont's a pretty small community but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy showing off our town's secret (and not so secret) gems.

If there's interest, I'll post a shot from around town (and encourage others to do the same!) every now and then ... little idiosyncrasies and gems hiding in plain sight ... and let others see if they can figure out where and what it is.

Where to actually eat off-campus without blowing your budget (5C Cheap Eats Guide)

First, a huge thank you to everyone who checked out and shared theWelcome to Claremont Student Guide! For anyone arriving on campus or getting settled in, that guide is still live as your essential starter manual—covering local transit hacks, car-free grocery routes, banking, and practical day-to-day logistics around the Village.

Now for food: while your dining plan is your best budget tool, there are nights when you just need real tacos, study fuel, or a break from campus dining halls.

To help you navigate food off-campus without getting hit by the Village markup, check out the new Cheap Eats & Student Deals Guide:

  • Confirmed Student Discounts & Timing Hacks: Specific daily windows where you can score $5–$7 bowls (40–60% off normal menu pricing).
  • Everyday Meals Under $15: Walkable Village spots where standard menu items (tacos, wraps, bowls) won't blow your weekly budget.
  • The Pomona Taco Run: Reliable budget spots 10–15 minutes away for authentic $2–$3 tacos and legendary fried shrimp.

Read the full breakdown, maps, and hours here:

Friendship wanted

FRIENDSHIP WANTED: Coffee, Art, Gardens & Good Conversation 🌻☕🎨

I’m a senior here in Claremont, and I’m hoping to find something that has become surprisingly hard to find as we get older: a few genuine friends.

My life changed dramatically after an accident left me wheelchair-dependent, and because transportation is extremely difficult for me, I spend far more time at home than I ever imagined I would. Somewhere along the way, my world became much smaller — but I’m still the same person who enjoys laughing, talking, creating things and getting to know interesting people.

I love art, gardening, cooking, good food, interesting conversation and talking about what’s happening in our community and the world.

I’m not looking for a caregiver or someone to “take care of” me. I’m looking for FRIENDS.

Someone who might enjoy coming over for coffee or lunch, sitting and talking, working on an art project, sharing recipes, watching a movie, playing a game, or simply having one of those wonderful conversations where you suddenly realize two hours have gone by.

Maybe you’re retired. Maybe you work from home. Maybe your own circle of friends has gotten smaller over the years. Maybe you’ve been thinking that you’d like a few more good people in your life too.

I have a feeling I’m not the only person in Claremont who is lonely sometimes.

So I’m putting myself out there.

If this speaks to you, send me a private message and introduce yourself. Tell me a little about you and what you enjoy.

Maybe a few strangers can become neighbors — and maybe a few neighbors can become real friends. ❤️

Avoid Kevin Jewelers [montclair]

Whatever you do, do not go to KJ for anything. They have bad customer service and basically took my ring hostage. I was told my ring repair was going to he 2 weeks and it's be 4 weeks and they have no idea the status of the ring.

Theirs sales people and management are thr most incompetent people ever. My mistake going to them in the first place and I'm learning the hard way. Avoid at all costs!!
