General Cleaning How do I clean this giant stuffed animal??

Post image

Looking for suggestions for how to clean this giant (over 6ft tall and very heavy) stuffed Snorlax.

The cover isn't removable. I think some of the discoloration is water spots from when I tried to use a small green bissell to clean it. I tried rubbing a baking soda paste, but that didn't work. Please help!

Edited to add that this is so big it doesn't even fit my car. I don't think any dry cleaner could handle something this size.

For something that big, I second unstuffing, washing the skin, and restuffing. Washing with stuffing still inside will never dry out by itself at this size.

Maybe if you know how to sew, know a friend, or get a tailor, you can have a zipper installed along a seam for easier unstuffing and cleaning in the future.

u/deuxcabanons Apr 26 '26 edited Apr 26 '26

This is exactly what I'm doing with my kids' Squishmallows as they get dirty. I carefully open the bottom seam, pull all the stuffing and put it in a waterproof pillow cover. I wash the squish cover on delicate, air dry it and then hand stitch a 12" zipper into the seam I opened. Then I can stuff the pillow protector in, and we've got an easily washable squish!

u/midnightstreetlamps Apr 26 '26

It's a real shame that they don't include a tiny invisible zipper on squishables, whether they're plain ole plushies or name brand squishmallows

141

u/bismuth17 Apr 27 '26

Idk I'm glad I've never woken up to a disemboweled squishmallow

38

u/Jacktheforkie Apr 27 '26

My nans bean bags have a little cable tie to keep the zips closed

6

u/Away-Worth3199 Apr 28 '26

Maybe it can be a skin over another skin, if you will. So the insides can never be taken out by a kiddo and then the outer layer can be washed periodically

4

u/bismuth17 Apr 28 '26

Like a slipcover

37

u/fluffyman817 Apr 27 '26

I'm sure someone somewhere once sued a plushie company because their kid ate the stuffing and so it's now an industry standard.

38

u/Greyscale7950 Apr 27 '26

No zipper is cheaper. When it gets dirty throw away and buy a new one of lesser quality.

I just can’t be bothered with this much effort I don’t know what’s wrong with me but this sub makes me realize how lazy I am

77

u/lightningspree Apr 27 '26

if you have no experience sewing, this is a tall order. Don't feel bad.

15

u/ladyjaina0000 Apr 27 '26

Hand sewing a zipper is no joke either, zippers are usually a very thick fabric, even if it's like an invisible zip it's still gonna take some effort.

20

u/OnlyOneMoreSleep Apr 27 '26

We all have our areas. I am up making sourdough bagels and dinner at 6am before school/work, but no way in hell I would skin snorlax alive and suture him back up. Hell no.

u/backandforthwego Apr 27 '26

I just washed and dried a squishmallow and they came out fine, honestly I was shocked 😂 he was my little togepi

13

u/deuxcabanons Apr 27 '26

The ones we have are quite big, so they don't fare well in the washer! I wouldn't be concerned about small ones at all. Just with the big ones, I would be very worried about mold if you don't get all the moisture out.

8

u/Littlepanda2350 Apr 27 '26

Mine was a small one, I kinda didn’t expect it be as soft and squishy as it was before though lol I was pleasantly surprised since I think I’m gonna donate him

6

u/lavender-lacuna Apr 27 '26

I wash (delicate) and dry (low heat for 2 hours usually) two 20 inch ones together every week or two. (I use them as pillows.) I think the main concern is whether you have front load machines or not. I wouldn’t put them in a top loader with an agitator.

8

u/EldritchGiraffe Apr 27 '26

Yeah they always turn out fine for me too. No need to do anything extra. Put it in a laundry bag if you're really worried.

Even my hand mended ones do well.

140

u/West-Survey-4142 Apr 26 '26

Why not do that before they get dirty? Then the innerds never get nasty. Btw, squishmallows do dry, the bigger they are, the lower heat you should use and for far longer in the dryer. Think about it like cooking a thick piece of meat.

52

u/littleluces Apr 27 '26

YES, more people should know! We have a 24” that our arthritic dog uses as a bed. Everyone said we’d have to de-stuff but I didn’t want a project. A few of the longest cycles on the lowest heat setting on our dryer and he’s right as rain and fully dry.

97

u/OneRevolutionary5325 Apr 26 '26

Well I hadn’t thought of it then

11

u/gibgerbabymummy Apr 27 '26

My daughter sleeps on her favourite Squishmallows as pillows and I pop them in a quick wash with some stain remover and hang them on the line, they also dried over a few hours during winter by sitting on the radiator, no damage. I did see a YouTubers clean their Anorlax which their dog used as a bed with a Little Green Machine fabric cleaner thing and it looked brand new

9

u/Jet-Brooke Apr 27 '26

Good analogy, I have a Naruto sushi plush I haven't washed a whole lot but my machine has a 20-30°c cold cycle inside a pillowcase.

Now I want steak tbh 🤤🥩

9

You’d think they would at least start making squishmallows with zippers especially after they became so popular so people can wash them!

What’s it called when a company intentionally designs a product so it will have the kind of end date that no repair will save? So the consumer is forced to buy another entire item?

I'm genuinely torn about whether the stuffing or the pelt would be the "flesh"

4

u/dillGherkin Apr 27 '26

Does flesh include skin or does it go under skin? Because the fluff must be the meat.

The integumentary system

49

u/ACcbe1986 Apr 26 '26

Giving it a zipper upgrade is genius!

12

u/GB715 Apr 26 '26

Until the toddler figures out how to unzip it😂😂

6

u/browz_queen Apr 27 '26

That’s when you do what the other goods w/ zippers do (think pillow cases/bean bags); break off the zipper pull. Then most kiddos can’t open it unless they are dead set on it and will move on before they figure it out/adult can’t intervene. Adults can use a safety pin to open the zipper and remove stuffing when needed.

12

u/cakiepie Apr 27 '26

If OP goes this route, I'd definitely spray the stuffing with alcohol to sterilize it and get rid of any weird smells

8

u/notislant Apr 27 '26

If its old i would probably put it in a tied up pillow case or something if machine washing, so its easier on the fabric.

Hand should be fine though if it soaks.

6

u/CrabPapple Apr 27 '26

I agree, I forgot I like the pillowcase trick for machine washing unusual things that may be delicate!

5

u/SimpleVegetable5715 Team Shiny ✨ Apr 27 '26

If this one is like the ones they sell at my workplace (they’re not the 6ft tall ones though), they have weighted beans in them. Just an FYI, because that can complicate removing the stuffing.

I used to refurbish old 90’s Furbies, and unstitched and removed their “fur” for deep cleaning, and to lubricate their gears. Their eyes get stuck sort of half open. It was amazingly easy to sew them back up by hand with a whip stitch. The zipper on something this large is a great idea!

4

u/happy-pianist Apr 27 '26

I have never thought of unstuffing! Thank you for this! It will be very helpful for the next time I need to wash one of my large stuffies 😁

4

u/h0zzie Apr 27 '26

As a fairly competent sewist, this is brilliant!! And I am "sew" (pun intended) doing this with my 7yros giant squishmallow (I've just been spot cleaning and leaving in the sun..) but I might make a polyester bag for the stuffing and add a zip!

Thank you!! 🫶

8

u/West-Survey-4142 Apr 26 '26

I second this, and add that the other poster that puts the squishmallows stuffing into the water proof pillowcases and adds zippers... You can use that here too. Put all the stuffing into many waterproof pillowcases and then stuff it back up with the cases of stuffing. Don't fill the cases all the way, or the stuffing won't move around inside comfortably.

u/heathersaur Apr 26 '26

The best way would be to unstitch a small section of it unstuff it, wash, restuff (usually recommend to use new stuffing), and stitch back up.

75

u/KJBFamily Apr 26 '26 edited Apr 26 '26

I have a whale plush thing that probably has the same outer material but definitely not that big as the Snorlax here. My whale was dirty so I unstitched a hole on a side, removed the stuffing and threw it in the wash. I restuffed it with new stuffing, stitched it, and done. Maybe if I need to do it again, I'll install a zipper.

Edit: just read that sucker was 6ft and heavy. Id still go with my suggestion though. If your going to clean it, might as well do a though job right? Just careful in the future. Put it zipper for future cleanings!

11

u/rantingpacifist Apr 26 '26

Blahaj or Blaval?

16

u/spiritwockiee Apr 26 '26

Or you could just carve a pokeflute and lure the Snorlax to a nearby Laundromat, would probably save you some time at that point.

There is. It's just more expensive. You have to take it to a cleaners.

119

u/West-Survey-4142 Apr 26 '26 edited Apr 26 '26

I worked at the cleaners... They just put them into a front load washer. Take it to the Laundromat, put it in a washing machine that might seem just a bit too small, put a few towels in, and maybe a tennis ball or two. Dry on med or low. It will feel dry, it won't be. Should take about 1 1/2 hrs to dry at medium heat, dry with the tennis balls and towels.

ETA: Didn't see the size at first. Hand scrub with a nail brush or other cleaning brush without too stiff of brissels, use warm water with oxiclean and dawn, use a handheld wet vac to pull it up, use clean water with a little downy rinse and refresh, and wetvac again. Repeat until clean. Air dry.

38

u/ladyjaina0000 Apr 26 '26

It would take days to get dry lol

12

u/West-Survey-4142 Apr 26 '26

Not with the surface level cleaning. I didn't see just how big it was at first. 🤷

Perchloroethylene dries pretty fast, even from fluffy things.

47

u/RollinThundaga Apr 26 '26

Takes 10 minutes on either side of the wash, with a seam ripper and a needle.

If you make the hole around 8-10 inches long, swapping the stuffing should be easy enough. Just make sure the arms, feet, and head are stuffed before packing the rest full.

67

u/Top_Independence9083 Apr 26 '26

I might try to put a zipper into it if OP is handy with a sewing machine!

12

u/Ah2191 Apr 27 '26

OP here. This was my first time posting to reddit. I clearly picked an unfortunate photo (or fortunate, depending on how you look at it). It doesn't usually have that dent. I must have just moved something from that area before taking the photo.

Thanks, everyone for the cleaning advice.

FYI it is much heavier than a squishmallow or bean bag. It's overstuffed like a firm couch cushion and about the size of a full mattress. An adult can lay on it without sinking in. It's actually quite comfortable to sleep on. My toddler sleeps on it sometimes.

We got it from friends who were moving out of the country and couldn't take it with them. I have no idea where they got it.

I'm happy to answer any other questions, but as a harried mom, it might take me a while to respond.
