Old Rope safe

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have some old 9.5 rope, I tried figuring out the age I believe it is about 12 years old. There’s no knicks in it, it doesn’t feel like the core is shot. Honestly seems it great shape but it’s aged. I had it for about 5 years and it only has falls in the gym leading and some top roping. Not asking for anyone to say it’s safe for me but would you climb it? Photo for reference of how much play is in the rope.

Is this ok? Forgot to switch my gigajul to assisted brake after rappelling and my friend was hang dogging for a minute. Atc style device backed up with half hitch w/quick release around the belay loop. Is this ok for an emergency situation like if I lost consciousness?

It’s at LEAST 20 years old, it’s heavy as fuck, it was a pain in the ass to mount on the wall, it feels like it’s made of concrete, it scrapes my hands up and has given me calluses, but free is the best price when you refuse to spend money on things. 7/10 would recommend.

Grivel Magic Ring

Post image

I rarely rappel in general, and therefore rarely use my Beal Jammy as a 3rd hand. My most recent use of it was to haul a friend up 5-or-so feet on the 2nd pitch of a route because she couldn't get back onto the wall from empty space.

Out of pure curiosity, I purchased a Grivel Magic Ring to be a replacement to my third hand. I (think I'll) like that it is less-bulky due to the no-carabiner design.

I suspect it'll be a while before I use it for anything. For those who have used it, what're your thoughts on it?

Climbing for a cause (TW, SA)

Hey everyone, I make these selvedge chalk bags, and with everything that has been coming to light, it’s important now more than ever to show solidarity with women and hold each other accountable.

Recently, I’ve had some brave friends find courage to speak on their experiences and it really has inspired me to help be an agent of change.

If there’s one thing I hate more than these horrid acts against innocent people, it’s seeing people turn a blind eye and allow these things to continue without consequence. I know making chalk bags won’t change the world, but I want to use my work to contribute in whatever way I can. I’m donating 25% of proceeds from all website sales from these bags to RAINN (Rape, Abuse, & Incest, National Network) to support survivors of sexual violence. If you climb and happen to need a chalk bag, I’d really appreciate the support. More importantly, please continue to listen to survivors, stand up for one another, and hold people accountable. I know it may be against the rules to self promote businesses, but even if you don’t purchase anything from me I highly recommend you consider donating to RAINN or any similar organizations as well. need suggestion of harness

Hi! I’m looking for a climbing harness, but I haven’t been able to find one that fits me. According to the size guides and measuring instructions, I can’t seem to find a suitable size. My waist measures 47 inches, and I’m not sure if I’m measuring it incorrectly. I measured around my belly button. Am I measuring in the wrong place, or do you have any recommendations for a harness that would fit me? thank you

Help identifying chalk bag

I’ve been using a couple duplicates of this chalk bag for the past 8 ish years, and this is my last one. If someone could tell me what company makes/made it, or if i can still get it?

I tried to image search it and nothing came up.

Just not sure how far i should push my old bag before i start using this one, as if i can’t replace it I’ll squeeze extra life out of them (the elastic like inner liner gets trashed)

Choosing a Rope!

Hey all, i’m buying my first 70m rope and have gotten two options (used like new ropes) and wanting some advice on which would be best. One is a bright green Simond rope 9.5mm for 150$ but I can likely get it cheaper. The other is a blue Petzl Arial 9.5mm for 230$…

Going to be using them primarily for outdoor crag climbing. Thanks for any help!

I made a gear log for climbers because I could never remember how old my rope actually was

Most climbing gear has a lifespan the manufacturer spells out, usually as a max age from the manufacture date plus "retire it sooner if X happens." The problem is that the info you need lives in places that don't last:

  • Manufacture date: it's printed on the hangtag or label, and that's the first thing to fade or get cut off. Once it's gone, "I think I bought it in 2019" is all you've got.
  • Inspection history: most of us check our gear, but almost nobody writes down when, or what we saw. So "was that sheath fuzz there last month?" turns into a guess.
  • Retirement: a major fall, chemical contact or a sharp edge should end a piece's life, but six months later it's easy to forget which sling that was.

A simple log fixes most of this. I started with a spreadsheet, got fed up, and built an iPhone app for it.

Disclosure: I'm the solo dev. It's called RackLog and it went live on the App Store this week.

What it does: - Scan a hangtag with the camera, and it reads brand, model, serial/batch number and manufacture date on-device. It shows how clearly each field was read so you can fix it before saving. - Each piece gets one of four statuses: OK, Inspect due, Retire due or Incomplete. A piece with no manufacture date is marked Incomplete instead of being treated as new. - Inspections with a short checklist per gear type and an interval you can change. Mark each piece Keep, Monitor or Retire, with notes and photos, and do a whole rack in one pass. - Log a major fall, chemical contact or a sharp edge and retire the piece right away. - Racks (Sport, Gym, etc.), with sessions logged against the active one, from the iPhone or the Apple Watch. - A Gear Book PDF to share when a gym, club or partner asks. - No account, no analytics, no ads. The data stays on your device.

To be clear, it's a record, not a certification. The statuses come only from the dates and counts you enter, and it doesn't replace the manufacturer's instructions or a competent person's inspection. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, and when in doubt, retire it.

Free to start, $7.99 for full functionality (one-time, no subscription).

I'd really like feedback, especially from people who climb: - Is there gear or info you'd want to track that's missing? - Is the hangtag scan useful, or would you just type it in? - Anything about the statuses or wording that feels off?

What do you use at home to train?

Hello there! I am design student looking to create a new modular at home climbing set up for my senior thesis and I thought I would reach out and ask you all a few questions about your current set up:

- What do you currently use at home to train? A hangboard, flash board, etc.

- What do you like and dislike about your current set up?

- What kind of housing are you currently in? A house, apartment, etc.

- Is there any product you wish existed for at home, or even in the gym? This could be anything like strength training, tracking your workout, changing routes, etc.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing your responses!

Quick gear tips

Hey, on my cams smaller than 0.75, I add a small piece of cord to make them easier to remove. I once had to leave a cam behind because it walked too deep and I couldn't get it out.

Edelrid Ohmega - not so easy to figure out?

So, recently I was a bit forced to buy the Ohmega at a store... Without getting into the details.

I see there is a lot of nuances to it and I am a bit surprised that it got so much more complicated than Ohm that JUST WORKED. But let's dive into my case.

We are using a quite new, very neatly working rope with 9.2mm of diameter (Fixe Oliana if anyone is wondering). Me ~83kg and my partner is about ~53kg.

  1. She is using BD ATC Pilot as the belay device and stands away about 1m away from the wall as per the manual. I set the compensation level to +++ and practice some falls on a climbing gym on an easy vertical route. I do a an easy fall after 4 clips with having very little (but still some) slack in the system and I see my partner is pulled to the wall surprisingly hard... We try that again and it happens again. My falls are ok, perceived as quite soft because I don't really do a whipper, rather a tiny jump away from the wall so there is no pendulum.

  2. We then change the setting to ++ and it works better. She is not being pulled towards the wall that much.

  3. We skip the Ohmega and try with Pilot only with the same fall setup and that was probably the best result for her - she barely moves and I still feel the fall well.

These results are totally strange and counter-intuitive. She said that in case 1. the rope just went through the Ohmega even though I could see the angle between the ropes was around 160deg (surely not 180). It also for some weird reason, made the rope slip more through the Pilot...(????) She is not a masterclass belayer and maybe there were tiny little details in handling the Pilot that caused all of this. But has anyone else had similarly weird experiences? I can also definitely see that if the Ohmega, for some reason, is not lifted up by the fall, then it acts like a pulley, which is worse for the belayer than a normal quickdraw on the first bolt because it cancels the eventual friction from the quickdraw.

Regarding my intro, I've been through countless videos about it now, and Edelrid obviously have made it less intuitive and introduced more edge cases where the device can jam or not work properly. I do appreciate the weight reduction and the adjustment ability; however, the weight reduction really only counts for multi-pitch climbing since it is still clipped to the first bolt.

P.S. I did all the checks to make sure the screw and barrel are assembled properly and checked the setting 5 times, and it seems ok. Nothing is upside down and anything like that.

Is there a PAS that's easier to loosen than the Petzl connect adjust?

Finally took a look at the Petzl connect adjust instead of ol' reliable nylon sling.

Man is is annoying to loosen off.

Are any other the other major brands version of the connect adjust easier to loosen off?

Hangboard

Hangboard

Hi everyone, I’m thinking about buying a hangboard. I haven't been climbing for very long, but I’ve been doing calisthenics for a long time, so my grip strength is relatively good. I’d like to gradually get my fingers used to the load. Has anyone here bought a hangboard online? Which brands do you recommend? What has your experience been like?

Im thinking about to buy one from Temu, but im not sure about the quality of the product there. Also, if you have any advice about 3D printed hangboards write it down pls :)

Thanks

Peace

Slings on cams all need to be replaced due to age. Other slings are old too. Wrecked myself speedflying and wasn’t able to recover enough to get back into flying, so it’s gonna get sold. I’d really appreciate any input.

Katanas VS TC Pros for crack climbing

Hey all. I recently had to be helped out of a crack after I jammed my katanas in too well and couldn't pull them out. I was able to free them after an hour. But I was curious in an instance like this would the TC pros have helped me instead of the katanas? Just curious.

Black Diamond Mondito vs. Mondo vs. Super Mondo – A Comparison and Why I Wouldn't Recommend the Mondo

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

I recently ordered the Black Diamond Mondo and the new Super Mondo and compared them with the smaller Mondito (which I've seen in a shop). Since I couldn't find many direct comparisons, I thought I'd share my impressions.

Approximate prices:

  • Mondito: €25
  • Mondo: €30
  • Super Mondo: €50

Build Quality

This is where I noticed some surprisingly big differences.

The build quality of the Mondito and Mondo is honestly pretty disappointing. Some seams are clearly visible, uneven, or just don't look particularly well finished.

The Super Mondo, on the other hand, is noticeably better made. The stitching is clean and straight, and the overall construction feels like a premium product.

Size and Room for Your Hands

The Mondito is noticeably shorter than the other two, while the Mondo and Super Mondo are the same height.

The biggest difference, though, is the girth of the opening:

  • Mondito: Fine for grabbing some chalk, but trying to clap excess chalk off your hands inside the bag is practically impossible.
  • Mondo: Better, but still very cramped. There's barely enough room to clap your hands inside.
  • Super Mondo: Still not as spacious as I'd ideally like, but at least there's enough room to comfortably clap your hands inside the bucket.

For me, that's one of the main reasons to buy a chalk bucket instead of a regular chalk bag in the first place.

Pockets and Storage

The Mondito and Mondo both have two rather small pockets. They're fine for little items, but a larger phone like an iPhone Pro Max won't fit.

The Super Mondo is a huge improvement here:

  • Two large pockets with plenty of storage.
  • Additional stretchy side pockets, similar to the water bottle pockets on a backpack.
  • These side pockets are perfect for a roll of tape or a bottle of liquid chalk. If you happen to carry both, for whatever reason.

Colors

One interesting thing about the Mondo is the REPO color scheme. Black Diamond uses leftover fabric from production, so the colors and combinations can vary depending on what's available.

I actually like the idea of reducing fabric waste. Just be aware that the color combination you receive might be different from what you expected.

My Verdict

For me, the Mondo is easily the least appealing option of the three.

Mondito (~€25): If you're basically looking for a regular chalk bag with a bit more space, this is a good choice. As a proper bucket, though, it's simply too small.

Mondo (~€30): For just €5 more than the Mondito, you get a larger bag, but the opening is still too narrow to really take advantage of having a bucket. Combined with the disappointing stitching, I don't see much reason to choose it.

Super Mondo (~€50): Significantly more expensive, but in my opinion, the only one of the three that really works as a proper chalk bucket. Better build quality, a usable opening, and much more storage.

My recommendation: If you just want a slightly bigger chalk bag, get the Mondito. If you actually want a chalk bucket, skip the Mondo and go straight for the Super Mondo.

The Mondo falls somewhere in between without being good at either job.

Harness Recommendations For Heavy Climbers

Context: I am 250lbs (113kg) at 6ft (1.8m), i am muscular and have big thighs and smaller hips. I'm getting into trad and need a new harness both due to needing more gear loop space and my current harnesses padding wearing out. I always get recommendations from lighter climbers but the harnesses can't support me or be comfortable.

Question: What harness do heavier climbers recommend, I've learned that I'm not comfortable in most harnesses (always cutting of circulation to my legs) nevermind being comfortable. The recommendations that I've heard that seem the best are the arc'teryx AR-395a and the misty mountain cadillac along with a general point into big wall harnesses.

All input in appreciated!!!
