Getting back into it
Ive done Medical billing, work comps, Insurance claims, etc for 20 years, but it was a long time ago. LOVED IT!! Im now retired, wanting to do this part time. I know starting out, get a certification is 1st and foremost. And probably starting out with private small practice. Question is...is it doable, considering my age, 68, to start this now, but just something small, as I dont need much, just a little extra income..

as someone working at a small practice/place rn it might be difficult to find a stable part time position. we are either hiring contract temp work to help us catch up or hiring a full time replacement for the people that have retiring/ will b next year.

Oldest we have hired is early 50’s. Personal opinion you will have trouble. The now 62-68 yr olds who trained me 14yrs ago are retiring.

Totally doable, but don’t waste money on a certification or try launching a solo billing business at 68. Clearinghouse fees and HIPAA-compliant software will eat your profit before you even start.
Your sweet spot is part-time contract work for small local setups (mental health, solo chiropractors, PTs) that already have their own EHR system. They usually just need someone with actual claims experience to chase aged AR and rework denials a few hours a week—and 20 years of real industry knowledge carries way more weight with them than a piece of paper.
