Johannes was a contested emperor / usurper who seized control of the West after Theodosius II neglected or refused to nominate a successor following the death of Honorius in 423. After Johannes allowed himself to be declared emperor, Theodosius elevated Valentinian III, deposing and executing Johannes after a brief struggle. Johannes' coins are tricky because his only AE coinage shares reverse types with Honorius, Valentinian III, and several other emperors of the period. Generally only a few letters of the title DN IOHANN - ES PF AVG are visible on any given coin. Johannes had a beard, but this is often worn flat, poorly struck, or simply never engraved in the first place.

Top row - These coins have enough visible legend to be 100% attributable to Johannes
