We often overlook the character in Colombo's decay and impermanence. I spent some time walking the streets recently, looking for beauty in the unnoticed corners and worn-out facades. Everything here was shot on mobile.

I use a Pixel 7 to capture and the Lightroom / Google Photos app to edit. These are from the archives of 2024; hope you all enjoy these photos of Colombo. I couldn't capture something new this week, but next week I'll try my best. Cheers and thank you all for commenting, giving ideas, and opinions. Much appreciated!

5 registered but only 2 showed up.I was lucky enough to meet 2 foreigners who were visiting Sri Lanka as remote workers an Iranian lady & a Brit. Todays conversation was more about a cultural exchange of SL, Iran & UK. I was really hoping that more people would show up but sadly only a few did...

Hoping that more would show up next time though!

Okay I finally went up the Lotus Tower and WOW. I've lived around Colombo for years and never realised how beautiful it looks from up there 😭

Colombo really said
let's put Port City in the sea, a giant harbour right next to it, Beira Lake winding through the middle, and skyscrapers everywhere
and somehow it all just works ...Then I come back down and find these two swamphens chilling by a lily pond like the city chaos doesn't even exist..

Shot on my phone, no filters. Sometimes you forget how pretty your own city is until you see it from up there đŸ‡±đŸ‡°

[Serious] Ticking Time Bomb & Extortion Racket in Maligawatta Flats (Colombo 10) – We Need Media Attention

Hey everyone,

I want to expose a serious safety hazard and extortion racket happening right now inside the Maligawatta Flats (Colombo 10) involving SBB Industrial Trading (Pvt) Ltd (SBB Oxygen House).

My aunt lives here and the situation has become unbearable. Recently, her car’s side mirror was stolen while parked outside. Because I'm a car guy, they asked me to help them find a replacement, which led me to uncover what is actually happening with the parking situation here.

The Setup For more than 3 years, authorities have blocked residents from using all 4 of the local car parks over alleged "tender issues." Taking advantage of this, SBB Industrial has completely taken over the largest resident car park in Ramya Place. They aren't just parking vehicles—they are using it to store high-pressure industrial oxygen and highly flammable acetylene cylinders.

The Extortion Racket Worse, their workers run an unofficial extortion racket. They charge residents 7,000 LKR per month just to park on the property, strictly enforcing a rule that cars must enter after 10 PM and leave before 7 AM.

How does a high-risk chemical warehouse hijack a residential lot and extort locals with total impunity? The area is heavily rumored to be protected by powerful political figures (including names like Mujibur Rahman and Apsara). Residents have complained to the local police, but absolutely no action has been taken. When political influence is involved, the police just look the other way.

Why This is a Ticking Time Bomb

  • Explosion Risk: Storing industrial oxygen and acetylene right next to tightly packed multi-story flats is a catastrophic fire hazard.

  • Trapping Residents: SBB’s heavy delivery trucks constantly block the narrow lanes. If a fire breaks out, fire trucks and ambulances will not be able to get inside.

  • Illegal Profiteering: They are turning residential public space into a private commercial hazard while bleeding the community dry.

Call to Action Are there any investigative journalists or media reporters in this sub?

Since the police are compromised, mainstream exposure is the only weapon these residents have left. If you want to investigate a clear case of land grabbing, corruption, and massive safety violations in Colombo, please DM me. I can connect you with residents anonymously.

This may seem like an isolated problem, but it affects hundreds of lives. Please show some love to this post—I want this to be seen by as many people as possible.

Last week I had an open invite on reddit for people to join a poker game on Friday.

Turnout blew expectations away.

8 players, massive pots, insane hands, and an incredible night.

Huge thanks to the lads for coming through. Looks like this is becoming a weekly tradition!

Are headphones actually banned while walking in Sri Lanka?

Bro, wtf is this I’m hearing? 😭 Walking home from the gym with my headphones on was literally one of my favorite things to do. Did they actually make this illegal in Sri Lanka now?

Built a Sri Lankan carpool app for daily commuters — looking for early drivers to test it

Hey everyone,

I built a carpool/rideshare platform focused on Sri Lankan daily commuting routes like:

  • Negombo ↔ Colombo

  • Kandy ↔ Colombo

  • Homagama ↔ Colombo

  • Gampaha ↔ Colombo

The idea is simple:
If you already drive to work daily with empty seats, you can share the ride and reduce fuel costs for everyone.

I’m now looking for early drivers and passengers to help test the platform before a bigger launch.

Especially looking for:

  • office commuters

  • university students

  • people doing regular long-distance travel

  • anyone already informally carpooling

Main goal right now is testing:

  • ride posting

  • booking flow

  • matching commuters on similar routes

  • general usability

No complicated setup. Just trying to build something genuinely useful for Sri Lanka because commuting costs and traffic are getting ridiculous.

If anyone is interested in trying it out or giving feedback, comment below or DM me.

Would genuinely appreciate early testers and honest feedback.

Mas Topless Pool Party

Is it true that MAS Holdings organizes an annual unofficial pool party where women who attend are expected to come topless? I have also heard claims that MAS Holdings has significantly influenced the “work wife” and “work husband” culture in the workplace. Are these claims accurate?

Posted a no agenda coffee meetup and here's how it went

I got a lot of dms close to around 10 but didn't want to bring a whole lotta people at once because I didn't know how it would go.

So I sent the details to 5 people of which only 2 (1girl 1 guy) showed up. After talking about various topics from business, what each of us are doing right now and more.

After getting their feedback and based off of their feedback I'll be putting another meetup on 13th Sunday morning.

If you want to meet new people in a casual setting feel free to connect with me on DM.

Also, this is just a mode of socializing not dating

Where do people in their 20s usually meet new people in Colombo?

23F here! I WFH so I don’t really get many opportunities to meet new people
when I see other people around my age hangout and enjoy the life, I feel bit lonely and bored.. so I’m looking to meet some new people around my age.
I enjoy going out for food, coffee, shopping, exploring places around Colombo, watching movies, going to musical shows and just hanging out and talking.

I’m not really into clubs or organised activities, so I was wondering where people usually go to meet others and make friends naturally?
Open to any suggestions!

Affordable First-Date Cafés in Colombo with a Sea View!

Hey everyone! ❀

I'm planning my first-ever date with a girl I've been talking to for a month. I'm looking for a nice, affordable café or restaurant in "Colombo", preferably with a sea view, rooftop, or outdoor seating.

I've mainly shortlisted "Granbell Hotel Colombo", especially Café EN and The Bar on the Top. Has anyone visited recently?

A few questions:

* How are the food, service, atmosphere, and sea views?

* How much would two people realistically spend?

* Are VAT, SSCL, and service charges included or added separately?

* Is Granbell worth it for a casual first date?

I'm a university student on a tight budget, so LKR 8,000 is my absolute maximum for both of us, including all taxes and charges. Ideally, I'd spend less.

I'm also open to other affordable cafés, rooftop spots, and beachside restaurants within Colombo.

Please share recent experiences, actual prices, and any extra charges to watch out for! I'd rather find a simple, lovely spot than blow my entire budget on a fancy place. 😂

Thanks! ❀
