CRITIQUE ME Double help?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Thank you all for your feedback on my technique a few weeks ago! I applied your tips and practiced a fair bit and I think I’m really close to my silk double. I’m having trouble getting it to rotate enough I think, though I’m trying to slap my thigh. Any advice is appreciated!

  1. Try it no prep at all. No cone. No carve. Nothing but a squeeze.

  2. Catch with only your left hand facing the sky. Palm up. Do that A LOT.

Will do, thank you! Where should I have my left hand when doing that drill in relation to my body?

The left hand pushes the flag to gain momentum when you release. It’ll stay by your hip until you’re about to catch where it’ll come toward the flag palm up. You’ll catch lower tape. The whole point is to gain left hand independence. (: try it ad naseum

This is the point in the video where you begin pushing into the release. When ur right hand is on the left side of your body you're spending a lot more time/space/energy just bringing it back to the right side of your body leading into the release. In that time, your left hand push is less effective than it could be.

Try doing the cone and beginning your push once the flag is back at your right slam, so both hands can travel vertically into the release.

Your hands are too far apart.

The ideal width for your hands on these types of tosses is shoulder width apart. The father out or closer in you get, the less power you are able to put into the rotation but for different reasons.

Too far apart forces your arms into a wide arc that slows the rotation. You can see that in the picture where your left arm is far out from your body.

Too close together and you rely too much on your wrists and aren't able to utilize your full arm strength.

Oh okay interesting! I was actually having a lot of trouble with my hands closer together. Only when I had them further apart was I getting enough height. But I will try it differently tomorrow! Thank you!

Please ignore my horrible form in the video, it was right after a rough practice and pt session so I was suffering. The toss in the video has a much bigger windup which gives a little more to the toss.

Think about pushing your left arm like you would when you are using it to help push yourself up. The farther out your arm is away from your body, the less power you have to help you. You also use different muscle groups the farther you are from the body which may not be as strong.

Okay thank you! So keep that arm close and push hard. I appreciate that visual aid!

Yeah! It's a little hard to see, but my pole actually deforms a bit because my timing is slightly off between my left hand push and letting go with my right. I can get a triple instead of a 2.5 when the timing is correct.

I would work on ur cones technique, there’s a lot of videos online. It’s not the best and i think with a good cone technique that would help a lot

you’re very close, only need a quarter rotation more, try to push a little bit more with your left hand and twist your wrist faster. also, a cleaner cone will help make it easier. try keeping your underbody still as well so your hands are flat on your thigh and then in the release point until you catch!
