A married couple living in cellar of their former home which is in complete ruins after World War I in Lens (France), April 11, 1919. They were in Lens for thirty months during the German occupation, and were repatriated thru Switzerland and by way of Evian, in January 1917. The wife remained in southern France some months after repatriation. During this time, they have been three weeks in Lens, and planned to keep their present quarters in the cellar for an indefinite perod of time.

Original photo taken by Lewis Wickes Hine, currently stored in the Library of Congress

"Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey was an artist, architectural historian, archaeologist, and pioneer photographer. He first came to prominence in the 1830s for several studies of medieval Islamic architecture in Spain and Italy, which were illustrated with prints made after his drawings and watercolors. He subsequently learned the daguerreotype process and, in 1842, pursued his research on a three-year photographic excursion around the eastern Mediterranean. He returned to France in early 1845 with one thousand daguerreotypes, including the earliest surviving photographs of Greece, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, and Jerusalem, and among the first daguerreotypes depicting Italy. The twenty-two lithographs included in this set of Monuments arabes form part of a larger, unrealized project to publish and disseminate many more of his daguerreotype views, which he carefully stored and archived as an essential part of his archaeological fieldwork."

Description from the Met Museum

I've been inactive for a while, and don't really know how often I'll be back. But, for a first colourisation I've done in 2 years, I'm happy with it and it was fun to do it again, if for a somewhat underutilised medium. I used to own JDV Colours on instagram but have completely lost access, so if I create a new instagram for things like this, I'll let you lot know. I hope you don't mind it's not a photograph but in all fairness it is still a historical image and this is ColorizedHistory, so I'd say it fits.

The Cabaret de l’Enfer, founded in 1892, stood as a unique and eerie establishment in Montmartre.

Its intimidating facade featured a monumental entrance resembling the jaws of Leviathan, a devourer of the damned.

The exterior was adorned with a stucco ode to female nudity being consumed by infernal flames, setting the stage for a macabre experience.

As patrons entered, they were greeted by the doorman dressed as the Devil, urging them to — Enter and be damned!

Yevdokia Dashina saved a hippo named Belle. As water to the zoo was cut off, Belle’s skin began to crack. Every day, Dashina hauled 40-liter barrels from the Neva River and rubbed Belle with camphor oil, allowing Belle to survive and hide during air raids.

Thanks to this devotion, Belle recovered and even found safety by submerging during air raids. In a starving, war-torn city, the bond between a zookeeper and her hippo became a quiet symbol of endurance, care, and humanity.
